This is a strange thread. Are people really that surprised about cutting MW? Cap space, complaining, and scheme fit moving forward kind of dictated this outcome. If you want to resign Glenn, Gilmore, and Incognito, this is the type of move you make. Mario will find a home playing in a 4-3 somewhere else.

The benefit of 15-20 sacks doesn't come close to outweighing the drawback of keeping a player who had no problem quitting on his teammates, coaches, and fans.

The "why" he quit is simply not relevant.

It will be interesting to see how other teams approach him.

GO BILLS!!!

I know exactly how they will approach him, mostly likely with open arms as they trip over themselves laughing at how the bills would just let him go because Rex Ryan didn't know how to use him properly.

But hey, the Bills don't want to look like an inept organisation letting the great Rex Ryan go after a catastrophic failure of a season.

@JeffRussoWKBW

Associated Press via .@john_wawrow reporting #Bills plan to cut DE Mario Williams this off-season #Buffalo

At his price, Mario should have been willing to do whatever the Bills asked of him. His attitude all season long has been bush league.

Pretty much. Entitled SOB. But at the same time, it's a point that the coaching staff has to be willing and able to get him on board.

We'll see. Film doesn't lie and any team will be acquiring a head case with a record of quitting.

Not sure how anyone can suggest it's a question of the Bills not wanting to look inept. I know it's hard to wrap your head around, but a player's disgruntlement with his head coach is simply no justification for quitting on his teammates, coaches, and fans in such obvious fashion. As I said previously, he quit when there were plays to be made, before the season and playoffs were lost and there is no telling how those plays might have impacted a play, a series, or a game that might have made a difference.

And it's really a tough sell when the guy next to him is busting his ass trying to achieve a result Mario no longer cares to share in. I can't remember anything quite like it.

We can certainly do better than Rex at HC.

I guarantee we can't do worse than a player that simply doesn't give a crap about his teammates.

Except that the anonymous bad-mouther said that Kyle Williams was the only one who could have said anything to Mario and didn't because he thought there was no use

I would expect the anonymous person is a DLman who is watching the DLman's film cutup in DL meetings, knows exactly what Mario's assignment is supposed to be, and is in prime position to assess whether or not he's going full throttle.

We have @ DE:
Lavar Edwards - too young/new
Hughes - he has the attitude, but i doubt he'd say anything
Lawson - wouldn't say anything
DT:
Barnes - too young.
Bryant - my other thought.
Dareus - no way
Worthy - too new
LB's
Bradham - I could see it, as he has to be frustrated at what is going on.
Brown - no.
Enemkpali - Rex's boy might be homering.
Reddick - who?
Tarpley - no
Valles - who?
DBs
Only ones I think??
Meeks
Rambo
D.Williams
Injured:
Wynn - I do not know if he is connected enough with Buffalo, or would have room to say anything right now with a finger on the pulse of the team.
Carrington - my bet. Been in Buffalo a while, knows enough people here, has shown a bit of an attitude before.
KWilliams - hell no
Its definitely Garrison Sanborn.

If the Bills are indeed planning to cut Mario Williams, they better sit his a** on Sunday. You can't cut a player who is injured before the last game of the season.

i've been wondering this, too.

film doesn't lie when you know the play call

too many of the plays i watched mario it was clear his responsibility was to simply hold the edge. after we kept getting burned by quick offenses and dumps all over the field by the qb, rex seemly changed his defense to have mario or hughes anchor their side when it was the strong side.

when it was the weak side he seemed to have them play the edge

it was very strange and i have not seen such play design - if i understood it correctly - since high school.

Film doesn't lie when you do know the play call, too.

There was a thread after the Washington game that linked to a Football Outsiders article with gifs to support their assertion that Mario was dogging it. The first gif was of a running play that he could not have played any better; set his corner and turned the play into the pursuit that was slow in getting there. Great play by Mario and pretty easy to ascertain what his keys were pre-snap.

The other gifs were damning. As were the All-22 views of every game the last several weeks. He simply chose to disengage. On third and long with an empty backfield, one doesn't need to know the play call to determine what his keys were and that he needed to get up field and apply pressure.

I wasn't surprised by the comments revealed by his teammates alluding to taking "two steps and then stopping." We were saying the exact same thing weeks ago. I'm pretty sure his teammates knew the exact play calls, too.

The defense of this quitter is amazing around here.

I'm no expert and I am genuinely curious to know how this explains the differential in stats between him and the rest of the line? He is being used to set the edge exclusively and never make a tackle?

i will do further study but have looked at it before. his tackles are less than half of what he had last year; most of the DL has had the same numbers for tackles. Everyone is a fraction of their sacks, pass deflections and tackles for loss. Mario, himself, had 7 tackles for losses last year and 0 this year.

2 things to keep in mind before i delve in to this with stats.

1) mario would disapear for weeks at a time last year and his effort was and always has been questioned.

2) mario playing poorly or not we're still tops in the league in run defense, so something is working to stop them even if mario is not.

but my biggest take is if rex is to be this great coach and has any pulse of the team as such, why hasn't he pulled mario?!

I can't see Kyle jumping into this. he is too much of a team player, Probably he voices his opinion with teamates. i just don't see

Him stirring the pot. Not his style and those paychecks are still pretty nice size. i could see Kyle someday being a candidate for the stadium wall.

Agreed. Not his style, if he has something to say he would say it to a guy's face not to a reporter and not anonymously.

I think there is also a kind of understanding, that injured players (or inactives) don't call out their teammates. It's one thing to call a guy out if you're standing next to him taking blows and blocks and fighting your own battles. It's another to call him out if you're standing on the sidelines in street clothes.

here is some damming evidence against Mario, ouch!

"One other teammate, who wished to remain anonymous, ramped it up a notch in saying Williams checked out a long time ago, back to not wanting to take part in the conditioning test before training camp.

“It’s been clear to me that Mario doesn’t care about anybody but himself,” the teammate said. “He followed that up by not giving any effort during the season and complaining about the scheme instead of manning up and saying he played like crap and doesn’t care.”

Has Williams checked out? “Totally checked out.”

A good argument for incentive contracts, just wishful thinking, I know

Same for guaranteed contracts for players and coaches who don't live up to expectations.

amazing we say schwartz's shortcomings on defense were the inability to stop teams last year and all of this hoorah yet, turn around and excuse Rex for this for only being in year one

disgruntled employee coached by a coach who bit off more than he could chew/lied to an organization

An escape goat to me is someone on whom blame is placed even though they are actually blameless. Mario is not blameless. If you watch he games you know this, he is part, maybe a big part, of the problem. His effort has been lacking, and this is not a recent phenomenon, it's been going on pretty much all season. The only reason he hasn't been benched is because the HC can't bring himself to drop the hammer. The HC may be problem #1, but Mario isn't far behind.

For Rex to have any chance at success, IMO, he has to be made to bring in someone to be the hammer. He also needs this someone to be a stickler for the "mundane" details of day to day business, and also be a strong game manager because Rex isn't these things. You might ask "then why keep Rex?" My answer would be that he isn't going anywhere so let's make the very best of his tenure that we can.

In the second half of the season Mario had almost a quarter of the statistical tackles (a quarter is being generous) that the rest of the D line had individually, and only a portion of production he had the first half of the year. He did get injured, and did miss a game in the second half of the year, but that reason has taken a backseat to complaints about the scheme. If he was too injured to be productive then he should've been benched, but then again we were already shorthanded, maybe Rex had to make do with what he had.

Saw an article yesterday, can't find it this morning I was into several drinks last light, but it showed Mario had dropped into coverage 21 times this year, the previous years it averaged around 16 or 17. It wasn't even one more time per game. It was 18 times under Pettine. His complaints are unwarranted and he is just trying to get out of town. I say good riddance!

Just a !@#$ing joke. The fact that Rex couldn't figure out how to utilize someone like Mario Williams and we are now getting rid of him.....

We are all in on Rex

Who would you rather have? Incognito and Glenn (you can replace one player with Bradham in the combo) or Mario Williams on this team next year? Because of the cap situation that is what the front office would have faced if Williams was an all-pro this year.

I think it's true that Williams would likely have been gone, but if he played lights-out 1) he might have trade value 2) he would have a larger choice of teams and could negotiate a higher salary 3) it's possible that the Bills might have done better, even playoff contention better?

This is the part I don't understand, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to understand he'll be a likely cap casualty, so why not play his best and showcase himself?

I concede if he was an all-pro he could have trade value but even in that scenario you are only going to get a mid to low round pick for him because of the 20 million dollar salary. To be honest I don't think any team regardless of his play would give Mario more money. He is currently making quarterback money at the DE position and is what 31 or 32 years old?

My point being regardless of how this season played out the Bills were at a crossroad with him and it was going to end ugly either way.

Personally, I won't loss any sleep over him leaving.

Film don't lie; I've seen too many lackadaisical plays from Mario this season to give two schitts about the Bills cutting him loose. Look at how Hughes goes balls out on every play.

The Mario F5 ground up in the freezer thread will live in infamy, but it's time to turn the page on that chapter.

Rex and Whaley get this offseason to bring in the D players they want/need, and we judge Rex next season.

Just pulled that play up, and Dallas got a delay of game on that play. The way Mario was twitching, I want to say he was going to rush anyway. I have no idea why he was lined up there. When they lined up again, the offense showed an identical look, and he lined up closer to the D line and did rush. No one got there in time, and a 22 yard first down was thrown to Williams on 3rd and 19 :wallbash: Edit: A great effort by Dallas' Williams to get the 1st down.

Oh it isn't at all. While I loved the signing of him and how he played the previous few seasons, he has been a big f#&king baby this year. He is not a leader and only cares about himself. Remember Ray Lewis saying he didn't follow the play, rushed the QB and gave up the touchdown - that was the only real effort I saw this season from him.

Three players come to mind when reading these comments: Jerry Hughes, Aaron Williams, and Corey Graham. These three have never been shy about voicing their opinion and all have a certain status on the team that warrants inclusion of their thoughts. For my money, I think it's Jerry Hughes. He lines up opposite Mario, so Mario's lack of effort would also hinder his production. I've also heard him use the term "bell cow" in an earlier interview. If I was a betting man (which I am, haha), I'd put my money on Hughes.

There are some serious leaks within this organization which need to be dealt with.

Honestly, it seems to me that there has been a lot more bad information leaked to the national media than accurate stuff. I will give this more creedance because Wawrow is reporting it, but most "insider info" leaked via the national media seems to be speculation reported, and then people "run with it" so to speak...it makes sense that they would cut Mario, we all kind of guessed that...but I wonder if anyone really leaked it to a reporter.

Why is FO a joke? What problem, *specifically*, do you have with their DVOA method of ranking defenses and production? Their method is easily accessible on their site. (Btw, I don't take seriously criticism that amounts to hand waving claims that stat analysis is bs/useless. It's like saying Bill James's work is a joke because he didn't play the game and is just a nerd.) I also don't think that the gifs referred to were from FO, btw, but I could be wrong ...

Would be very interesting if Hughes was one of the guys making comments because him and Mario had become very good friends off the field the last couple years. I follow both guys on twitter and they spend alot of time hanging out in the offseason
