AP Report: Bills Will Release Mario After the Season

We got one good, two great and one lousy year out of Mario for $80m. We also got Pettine and Schwartz to want to come he because Mario was here. He made Hughes and Dareus better for three of the four years. We didn't make the playoffs so overall because he basically gave up in retrospect it was a decent but not good or great signing. It did, however, help the defense tremendously overall. This year it hurt them although IMO Rex hurt them more than Mario did.

$65-66 mill, not $80 mill.

I honestly don't know. The Jets defense was good in 2013 and not so good in 2014, and that's pretty recent. However, they really did have a terrible CB situation in 2014--I mean, those guys simply couldn't cover--and I can't get past that. I'm willing to give him another year to get it right.

^{Blame Mario all you want, it was Rex that caused the lack of production from a defensive grouping that was excellent the previous 3 years. So many people complained for years that Spiller wasn't used right and that our stupid OC's could blast him into space or whatever. LOL. Why isn't the same being said for Mario? He is a pass rush specialist being paid a huge salary to do just that. Rex decided to use him as a cover linebacker. Its completely idiotic. It's like using a Ferrari to delivery pizzas. Put the blame where it fits. The Mario signing was a great move by the Bills. A tremendous coup that shocked the NFL. Mario was very productive for 3 seasons and was completely wasted this year. This was inevitable but it is still crazy to me. How can you not effectively use Mario Williams? He may have been gone even with a decent year but restructure always felt like the play. The Bills appeared to be heading in the right direction but Rex disarmed a solid defense. Now, they are improved on the offensive side (not great but improved) and pretty much a tire fire on ST and defense. I don't really understand how that happened??? Oh well, maybe with health and a couple of additions the defense can return to respectable.

Maybe I'm missing something but if we are going to get rid of him why not try trading him? I'm thinking a team playing the 4-3 would give us good value for him.

 

Letting him go for a division rival to pick up and hunt down Tyrod twice a year would be one of the more boneheaded moves we've ever made.

People need to speak with their tickets and not buying NFL package if your out of town. Tell Direct TV it is the Bills lack of playoff appearances as a team fan that is making it hard to shell out $250 to see them play. Word will get back to Pegula's. If Bills drop from 60k season tickets to 35K they will get the picture much quicker. It is not OK for Rex Ryan to come in here as HC/DC and take a top 4 defense and basically destroy what has been built. Pegula should tell Rex he needs to hire a top flight DC not named Ryan! Let Rex decide if he wants to stay! Mario is making to much but so is Darius, McCoy, Clay, K Williams, McKelvin, etc...

I don't think Rex is a good head coach. But it's whistling past the graveyard to say that his defenses aren't historically dominant. In ten seasons running defenses, he has had 4 top-2 rankings, 7 top-6 rankings, and 9 top-12 rankings according to the highly reliable (in my opinion) Football Outsiders.

 

Dude the game changes. Rex's defense had elite levels of talent to work with this year. You saw the results. Go ahead and blame Mario for that.

 

Wee Willie Keeler dominated too. He bunted foul with 2 strikes until he worked a walk. He was so dominant they changed the rule because of what he did. He has as much of a chance of a return to dominance as Rex.

 

Do I want the Bills to win with Rex? Of course. I like the guy. It is plain to see that they won't win though because if his scheme is so inflexible that it makes Mario Williams and Marcell Dareus look bad, it isn't going to work.

What we need is a $19M/season player to stop acting like a little B word and play up to his abilities with 100% effort.

But isn't it on the coaching staff to put him in a position to play up to his abilities? What if he'sbeing asked to cover TEs out of the backfield, or to set the edge and not rush the passer? Is that what he's best at?

 

So, sure, people say he should be getting constant pressure on the snaps he's asked to rush the passer? But that's putting your players in a position to fail. No one gets pressure on every single snap. Especially, when he's gassed because of the lack of substitutions and the fact that he's running around covering backs part of the time.

 

The problem is the same problem we've seen for over a decade. Run good players out of town because crappy coaches can't figure out how to use them. A year ago, we had one of the best pass rushing defenses in the league. Now we have to retool the defense with new players, because the old players suddenly got bad. It's the very definition of treading water. We've all seen it many times over, and it's happening again.

 

Personally, I'm not saying Mario is indispensable. Cut him, keep him. I honestly don't think it matters. As long as we just continue to rearrange the deck chairs, the real problems are being ignored.

Guys like Muhammad Wilkerson have thrived in Ryan's defense, so I'm not buying into Mario not being able to do well in this system. Mario can do well in any defense if he feels like it.

cap savings are much better keeping him until june 1st. we'd save an additional $7mm in cap hit.

We can designate him a June 1st cut at any time; every team gets 2 to use before June 1st, but his cap hit remains on the books until June 1st. It would not help us in FA or in re-signing Glenn or Richie. It would spread the dead money over the 2016 and 2017 season. Cutting him outright means we take the full hit just in 2016. We are not such a dire cap space situation that we will need the added savings next year. But we do need space in 2017 to re-sign Gilmore and possibly Taylor. Contrary to common belief, Gilmore is signed next season at a 1 yr/$11 mil cap number. They do need to give him a new contract before next season but he currently counts 11 million against the 2016 salary cap

 

So the big re-signings for 2016 are:

Glenn(~8-9 million)

Richie(~4-5 million)

Cutting Mario without the June 1st designation saves us 12.9 million on the 2016 salary cap with zero dead money in 2017(edit). And that money can be used right away.

Oh I'll be here and rooting for the Bills too. I just realize that they are up against it in having to overcome their coach. Answer honestly: Do you think Mario Williams or the Buffalo Bills have a better chance of being in the 2016 playoffs?
