They split their regular season matchups and he owned him in college. The dude wins everywhere he goes and that's not debatable.

They lost by 3 points lol did everyone just hallucinate? 3 NFC championships in 4 years is pretty good. Especially when you consider the Seahawks were monsters around that time.

The NFC was soft as cheese and Seattle was still starting the corpse of Matt Hasselbeck at that time, IIRC.

I think there's a big difference between coaching a bunch of kids who are bigger, faster and stronger than everybody they play against vs. coaching a bunch of grown-assed millionaires in a parity driven league.

My expectation is a lot of turnover that will somewhat hamper the Chargers early, a year or two of contention with a really good roster and then the inevitable flameout when the players and a big chunk of the organization become sick of his idiocy.

Are you saying that Stanford was bigger faster stronger or Michigan? Do we just discount his 4 years in SF or his time in Oakland?

He took an awful Stanford team and had the largest upset in history against USC and then the most points scores against USC in history 2 years later. Pete Carroll left for the NFL after that and USC hasn't been a legitimate contender since. Legion of Boom was 11-18 or 19, so all 4 of his years. "If he didn't completely rebuild the Michigan program they wouldn't have a Championship" ftfy. He had a proven track record in a way we could only wish. You're trying to downplay how big this is for the Chargers, but the weapons they have are dangerous.

If you want me to pick apart each one of these I will. Stanford alone was 0-12 before he took over that means if he won 1 game he doubled their win total in his first year. He’s a good a coach but he’s not this oh my goodness let’s hide under the table Jim Harbaugh is back in the NFL deal. He’ll make things interesting for Pat Mahomes but ultimately he’s going to have to settle for being a wildcard team every year as long as 15 in KC isn’t injured.

"Led them" to a Super Bowl is inaccurate, imo.

That was one of the most talent-loaded teams in the last decade and the majority of their success was a result of the work of Greg Roman and Vic Fangio.

The instant that talent began to thin out and Harbaugh could only get them to 8-8, they got him out of their organization as fast as they possibly could.

I think it's only a matter of time before this blows up in the Chargers' face.

Before Harbaugh, the 49ers hadn't made the playoffs in 8 years, and they were 39-73 the previous 7 season combined. So no, they weren't "loaded" when he got there.  Roman and Fangio came with him from Stanford, so how is it their work?

He took a 1-11 Stanford and turned them around when USC was at the top of college football, to the point he was beating them head to head.

I was referring to Michigan.

And I don't put a lot of stock in his time at Stanford. He was 29-21. In the Pac-10. Not exactly setting the world on fire.

I already mentioned that I think he rode superior talent and good coaches at SF until they fired him at the first opportunity.

They were absolutely loaded and being driven into the ground by Mike Singletary, Who was 8-8 the season before he got fired and who is sooooo bad that not only is he no longer welcome in the NFL, he was last seen coaching a HS team to a 1-21 record in his last two years.

Yea they were loaded. That is beyond dispute. He still did a very good job in San Francisco, but hat roster he inherited already had: Frank Gore and Joe Staley in their prime (both of whom will get HoF consideration at some point) plus Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Mike Iupati and Delanie Walker. Then on defense he inherited Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Ahmad Brooks and NaVorro Bowman. Those guys were all there the day he walked through the door. And while Alex Smith at that point was considered a bust, and Harbaugh deserves credit for reviving him, he was still a former 1st overall pick.

Insane decision for him. His ego overran his common sense. He could have taken a ***** on the Dean's car at Michigan and they would have built him a statue all while cutting him a $125M check. Instead, he take a super high turnover job where his imagine as infallible will be questioned week to week by national reporters.

That said, it's an incredibly strong roster, so maybe he skates to a Super Bowl and retires as the greatest football coach ever.

I think your second paragraph perfectly explains why your opening sentence is wrong.

Other teams will hire coaches, draft players and sign FAs. No need to freak out every time it happens.

This!

Every year teams make move and everyone starts freaking out. This is just another hire that the media will over hype all off season. This will be last year's Rodgers to the Jets. "Chargers are instantly a Super Bowl contender"

They really have a lot of work to do on the roster. The have a QB that has talent but looks about as interested in playing football as your basic 80 year old woman in a bingo hall.

In life the 3 guarantees are death, taxes and the Chargers Chargering. I expect nothing different.

It is a strong roster but it has some holes and is old in some key spots. They have Herbert and they have their left tackle. At every other premium position they have a hole or a guy who will need replacing in the next two offseasons.

Obviously, you’re not intimately knowledgeable about old women’s interest in Bingo halls. They’re Very prepared, inspired and ferocious!

I know. I’m married to one.

But can she read what alignment a defense is in, check to the proper play, shift protections and hit the open receiver?

Hell yeah! Every game, she’s running 10 different boards, dabbing like a machine! No football coach has that ability.

Go look at Mike Williams cap hit. But make sure you are wearing dark trousers first.

Relies heavily on his coordinators.  Guy doesn't call plays or anything.

So you’re saying he’s a good leader who sets strategic goals and then hires good subordinates who are capable of implementing the details. That’s how a successful business works. 🤔

Greg Roman will be on this staff. Book it.

They have four guys with over a $30m hit for 2024.... and none of those are the franchise QB. That roster is much closer to a rebuild than it first appears.

That was an overwhelming defense with an outstanding veteran offensive line on the other side of the ball.

Even I could have coached that group to .500 piss drunk in a lawn chair, and I'm dumber than a chicken.

If he wins a Super Bowl to go along with his National Championship that would put him in rare company within the coaching ranks.

Whereas Mike Singletary couldn't play with 'em, couldn't win with 'em, couldn't coach with 'em. Couldn't do it.

Unfortunately for him the 49ers agreed. He couldn't do it. Poor Mike.

Smart move by a great coach. It is harder (and often pays more) to coach a prominent college team than an NFL team.  College coaches have to spend untold hours recruiting, and travelling around to do so. Saban travelled so much that he often used a helicopter. College coaches have to go to recruit's homes, and now many of the parents (or even friends) act as agents.

Very smart move for Harbaugh and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he is quite successful.

Good hire for the Chargers but people thinking this somehow makes them a Super Bowl favorite he literally went 8 years at Michigan without winning a bowl game till this year.

True enough, he might very well be gone in three ish years if he doesn’t have success, conversely he might do very well,  ya never can tell, it’s the nfl after all, sh-t happens…,

I've just spent the past few minutes thinking about this, and I think the list is Pete Carroll, Jimmy Johnson, and Barry Switzer.

Harbaugh is the guy who helped coach Kaepernick to a super bowl and another NFC championship. McDermott cannot have such success with a much better QB in Allen. The AFC just got harder while Pegula does nothing.

Maybe drafting another corner who doesn't play (Elam) in the first round or another defensive lineman in the first round who cannot sack Mahomes once in multiple playoff games (see Oliver, Rousseau, etc) will get us over the top! Just trust the process and McClappy......Nothing to worry about at all...

There is a reason why we have done nothing... WE JUST PLAYED IN THE DIVISIONAL ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS while the Chargers limped home in Week 18 over two weeks ago. Sorry new guy, but your take is poor.
