Why don't we know how to win?

You heard the announcers discussing how the Eagles "just know how to win". We have seen teams like the Chargers most recently that are the complete opposite. We are now 7-14 in game decided by 7 points or less since 2021.  Against good teams we will be in a lot of these games. Hell, nobody even sniffed a Super Bowl unless that record was flip flopped.

A lot of people here blame McD and yes, he owns a lot of this, but it seems like how it happens runs deeper than just one area. Is it the sometimes untimely turnovers? Is it the defensive scheme itself? Then addition the poor clock management overlaid on top of it. I get it, winners just win. But what is it in our recipe that doesn't make us "winners"?  At a bit of a loss as I'm sure many of you're.

Here are just some of the games that we have either blown or nearly blown in very improbable fashion.  We have won some close games as well, but as the record shows, few and far between.

  • Houston Playoff Wild Card 2019

Bills are outscored 22-3 to finish the game and lose in OT

  • Indianapolis Playoff Wild Card 2020

Bills are outscored 14-3 in the final twelve minutes. Colts fizzle out on the final drive. Bills hold on.

  • New England Week 8, 2020

Cam Newton fumbles on the Bills 19 yard line with 37 seconds left preserving the win

  • Arizona Week 10, 2020

          Hail Murray

  • Tennessee Week 6, 2021

Bills are outscored 17-7 to end the game. Bills stopped on 4th and 1 at Tennessee 3 yard line.

  • Tampa Bay Week 14 2021

Bills come roaring back with a chance to win on the last drive, instead it goes to OT. Bills lose in OT

  • Kansas City Divisions Championship 2021

          13 seconds

  • Minnesota Week 19 2022

Epic implosion fresh on our minds

  • NY Jets Week 1 2023

Jets outscore Bills 16-3 in the 4th quarter and OT, Bills lose

  • NY Giants Week 6 2023

Bills avert complete disaster with a likely no call on the final play

  • Denver Week 10 2023

Bills do everything to gift wrap the game, fold at the end.

  • Philadelphia Week 12 2023

Knowing how to win is just a cliche being trotted out by NFL announcers with air time to fill. Pretty much meaningless. The bottom line is this : Most NFL games are close. The Bills lose them because their HC is consistently too conservative in crunch time. It’s not about him knowing how to win- it’s about him being too afraid to try. So he makes choices that he thinks won’t lose in the moment. The problem is, it eventually gives the opponent a better chance to defeat you. In the close ones, they usually do. His record speaks for itself.

What’s makes it really strange is that Bills have a money QB, which is one of the things you usually associate with teams that are good in close games. In Allen’s defense, he does leave the field with the lead a lot.

Yup. It’s amazing actually that as good as Allen is. This absolutely horrific coach has screwed up one of the most talented QBs ever.

I think the over dependence on Josh, who even in his greatness can make some mistakes at times (although clearly the only reason we are in these games). We did run the ball well towards the end, but 50 attempts.

Then older players, not a lot of youth or even playmakers. Diggs is a great WR1 but he’s not a true home run hitter.

Than our defense which never dictated to anybody. It has always been a bend but don’t break. McD has brought way more pressure packages, but still. We play a very vanilla defense at the end of games.

Time management is obviously a huge issue and that’s on McD.

Last, but not least. We just don’t execute the kill shots. Not during or at the end of games and our pass centric offense doesn’t extend drives bleeding the clock and allows plenty of time for our warts to eventually show.

I don’t know where we go from here. Wish I did. Josh was insane. His best game since 13 seconds as far as will to win. It was basically the same type of game. Same devastating outcome.

This is a really good point and diagnostic.

McD doesn’t make catastrophic blunders of coaching that make even the casual viewer say “what an idiot he should be fired!” But he makes many small yet bad choices that amass to skew the winning probability in favor of the opponent. This happens so frequently his winning % in close games like OT defy randomness.

Could be the head coach.

After all he is the guy responsible for Breaking Jerry Jones playoff drought in 2009.  As the eagles DC his D got torched two weeks in a row to end the season costing them the division and then losing the wild card game.

He just simply can not change what he can not overcome...at least not here.

Hearing McDermott say Allen played well enough for the team to win the last weeks makes my head explode.  I dont ever want to hear him speak or talk about this team again.  I hope they just play it out and then decide to part ways in January.  Lots of coaching changes coming around the league this offseason so it is better to get a head start.

and my hot take is absolutely no one from the Andy Reid tree or the Bill Belichick Tree.

McDermott record in OT:

1-5

Only win was 2017 rookie head coaching year.

What about 3 points or less games?

What about 1 score or less games?

If McDermott's team didn't demolish the opponent like they were supposed to most weeks... McDermott is the reason this team cannot succeed.

I am now finally convinced after today.

At this point, it almost doesn't matter if McD has had bad luck, or really does pull defeat from the jaws of victory.

It has become ingrained in this team while he is HC.  If every one of us fans is thinking "how are we going to mess this up" w/ a few minutes left & a lead, it's a good bet the players have a similar mindset.

It continues until we string together a few improbable wins, or have a change at HC.

I’m getting cozy with the comfort that Allen is just Phillip Rivers. Try it, it makes more sense.

His turnovers is a MAJOR problem. Sure, throw three picks when it’s a shootout and the Bills can win the game 38-35. But yeah, that never happens either huh. Another 4th guarded INT on the wrong side of the 50 in a close game. Philly turned it into 7, easily. Allen is a dimwit.

Rivers isn't half the quarterback and to discuss it further is not worth anyone's time.

Jets- Defense fails to hold touchdown lead against Zach Wilson late in the fourth

Pats - Defense fails to hold 3 point lead in last minute, giving up a TD.
Broncos - Defense fails to hold lead on last drive

Eagles - Defense fails to hold 3 point lead last minute

Eagles - Defense fails to hold 3 point lead in overtime.

Why do these comments always bring out the crazies that want to compare every little tiny minute detail of the comparisoneés games.

One day, probably in like 4 years of not winning the Super Bowl, you’ll see.

Allen, for whatever reason…. is drowning in bad beats. There’s no way he’s accepting them in a vacuum. Rivers’s teams suffered stupid loses. Allen’s teams suffer stupid loses. That’s the extent of that comparison. Not arm strength and foot speed.

The Eagles are filled with national champions. We have guys with traits. We also don’t have HS state champions. Winners know how to win.

Very interesting point. We’re stocked with potential winners with great intangibles. Other teams just have outright winners.

Our defensive minded head coach can't engineer a stop when it matters.

We do silly things/take silly penalties/come up small and keep teams in the game. Good teams punish us for this. Even bad teams come through when we insist on playing to their level.

We play tighter as the moment becomes bigger and seek out new, implausible ways to lose.

IMO it's our culture. They all own it. We've seen everyone from Allen and Diggs through the bottom of the roster make just the awful plays or inexplicably not come through on a wide open type play.

We'll always have 2020-2022 but that iteration never won big either. We need a new coach/system and a culture reset. Clock's always ticking in the land of Not For Long. It feels like we're wasting a franchise quarterback otherwise.
