I think Smith knew he was out either before or during the game yesterday.  That win was some cold as ice corporate sabotage.

Why?? The Texans still have a shot at either Stroud or Young. Think Chicago need a QB? Is there a team that has the draft capital to move to #1 other than the Texans?

It's going to take a Greg Roman type, with an offense that is designed around the QB as a weapon both running and in the RPO game. And someone like Roman who would take the job.

I think Kyler Murray the person is the biggest thing in the way of his success. So many reports of him being lazy. Greg Roman won't fix that.

I would not want that Cardinals job. Crappy team and ownership.

And handcuffed to a mediocre QB

Worst part is he was mediocre when they signed him to that huge contract.  He was still mediocre when he injured his knee.  Now I'm sure the franchise is hoping he can come back by the middle of next year and not be worse than mediocre.  What a mess of their own making.

I would want nothing to do with that job.  Watt leaving, Murray is a man-child with a dumb contract, just a team built for one goal that will pry need to be torn down to make room for any other system.  They really put all their eggs in the Kingsbury/Murray basket

Yeah I am not a fan. Not sure where they go from here with the contract. I hate small QBs but he can be electric if he every gets it straight.

I have no real opinion on KK. Arizona has huge money tied up in Murray so of course they are going to go find another solution and hope their investment pays off. But I think it is largely a structural problem from the top down. They need to clear house. The next person will likely get the cane too once they can afford to drop Kyler. He carries $97M in dead cap space right now.

I think of Miami as the same. McDaniels has done an OK job overall. But the Tua/concussion issues are a total disaster. Which I think falls on everybody in the building and goes all the way up to the league. McDaniel's isn't the only problem there.

Corporate mindset:  "He devalued *our* asset!"

#1 pick is worth 3,000 points.  The #2 pick is 2,600.

Chicago could always trade out to a competitor who really wants a QB like the Colts who sit at #4.

Joe Wood DC in Cleveland fired at 6:30 AM. Media here are saying he is just a scapegoat for a dysfunctional organization. They are still piling on Stefanski but he may yet survive.

3 years in a row Joe Woods would play zone coverage nonstop while Cleveland's corners excel in man to man.  He always would switch with like 5 games left and the defense would improve tremendously.  I don't fully blame him for the run defense though because he was saddled with crap DTs.

Playing the game to win is a hateful move? It’s what I would want our coach to do. I’m selfish that way too.

It depends on which you think is more important: winning an individual contest or winning a championship.  Players and coaches tend to focus on the former, because that's their job.  GMs and owners should be focused on the latter.  The fact is that Houston voluntarily gave away something of great value yesterday, in exchange for being able to say that they won three games instead of two.  That's a pretty terrible tradeoff.

Kingsbury his repeated pattern of late season collapse is well established at this point, Murray can be effective at times.

The word on the street was the Kingsbury was hoping he got canned going back 5 or 6 weeks...said the relationship between him and Murray was "cordial" and not what you'd expect between your coach and the QB he coached in college and brought to the NFL and that it had broken down beyond repair.

Can't imagine he was giving full effort coaching during the week for a good part of the year...Rex style in his last year here where he'd be gone quickly at the end of the day.

It’s a lot easier to justify going for a young and up and comer …

coaching at Tech isn’t easy lol you are like the 5th brand IN TEXAS… behind UT , A&M, TCU, Baylor

you have 6-7-8-10+ D1 schools in Texas fighting for your recruits

Yeah too bad he wasnt able to get a talent like Mahomes and had to go against guys like Jarrett Stidham, Treyvone boykins and Baker Mayfield

I think Chicago takes a QB. The new regime doesn’t seem to have much faith in Fields as a QB and he was terrible this season.

Kingsbury never coached Murray before the NFL.

Did that happen to him every year around week 8?

The no. 1 pick will be moved.  Indy, Carolina or Atlanta could come up with a good enough package, and Chicago desperately needs talent on both sides of the ball. I would think Washington could try to move up too.

The players and coaches were doing their jobs. As you said front office should be worried about draft picks. Feels like asking players to lose would be something like “hey let up and coast so that we can draft your superior replacement next spring”.
Not the coaches worry, his is to prepare the team and make game decisions. Not the players worry.
Sure you end up missing out on that sure thing, but how has that worked out for Cleveland, AZ, Detroit and so many other teams that have had #1 picks in multiple years?
it’s only valuable if you hit the right player AND even then you’ve got to have a system for them to flourish.

Yeah, but the questions will be how do Chicago's player evals look and how far down are they comfortable moving. I could see dropping to #4, but everything else would be a bit more iffy. It would have to be a heck of a deal for me to move back to 8, 9, or even lower.

Indy certainly would seem to have the inside track, but maybe they would be happy with whoever falls to 4…

I am of the mind that Chicago will stay put and draft Will Anderson @ #1, who I think is going to be the next dominant edge rusher in the NFL.

Maybe, but that would be dumb.  Chicago needs a ton of help on both sides of the ball and a massive haul of picks in the next two drafts is just what the doctor ordered.

So could the next 21 year old version of Von Miller

Agreed. They had a dominant edge rusher in his prime (Mack) and did nothing. They need an overall infusion of talent

He basically had NO PROTECTION and 3rd rated receivers. I don't think they'll give up on him this early

I would. There’s nothing I’ve seen from him outside of his running abilities to make me believe that he’ll be a great passer of the football. In fact I think there’s rumors that the bears might be interested in trading fields and taking a QB with their 1st overall

Weird rumors. @Solomon Grundyhas it right. Tough to be a great passer when your wrs are either CFL level or injured for the whole season.
