Spotlight on Roger Saffold---WTF is he doing on the 98 yard TD pass?

Watching the reverse angle on that play and Allen is pretty close to being sacked for a safety due to Saffold going to double team nobody and leaving a guy in front of him with a clear path to the QB.

Now, granted, this could have been how they decide to block it up because Bates has nobody to block(the Steeler player in front of him doesn't rush and kind of just stands there and Morse ends up sort of coming off his block to get a piece of that defender, but it was more like he steered the Pittsburgh defender he was blocking into the way of the other guy and bumped him off course.  That defender actually gets a hit on Allen on the play but it doesn't matter because...well Josh Allen is freaking Josh Allen.

Just seems really weird to block it up like that when Dawkins had his man stonewalled...I would have to think Saffold was supposed to block the dude that hit Allen on that play??

@HoofHearted any thoughts?

Looks like a delayed blitz.

Peeburgh does that a lot. Without a man in front of him Saffold tries to help out Dawkins.

Not sure if the protection scheme is designed that way or just a bad adjustment by Saffold or another OL player.

It seems to be Minkah has a read on that play.  If Saffold stays focused on him, Minkahdoesn't go.  Saffold didn't see Minkah coming on a blitz and then turns to help out Dawkins.  Once Minkah sees him move towards Dawkins, he then goes.

Allen has pretty good protection most of the day yesterday.

This is why I'm glad we have coaches and not fans running the team.

It's a half slide protection. Basically you lock the backside tackle (RT) and every other Offensive Lineman is responsible for the gap to their left. The Backs will insert backside B gap looking inside/out. Saffold is responsible for the left side B gap - when he see's the defender back up at the snap he is no longer a B gap threat and so he works to double to his gap. Morse is ultimately responsible for passing off his block to Bates so that he can work to that left side A gap if something shows.

Beane really needs to stop dumpster diving in regards to the IOL.  A 1st or 2nd round pick on a guard who can transition to center would be nice…and then another OG on Day 3.

He was a big time FA signing. Just a whiff

I'm not trying to dismiss that perhaps and maybe he messed up, but I mean like ya said maybe it was drawn up like that or maybe a delayed blitz. I'm happy things worked out the way they did though. What a game. 0 sacks and what?....like 3 pressures all game. I think the dudes did good.....Pass pro

Speculation:

With our passing game, and our lack of running game, and our offensive line compared to the Chiefs' offensive line, would it actually be better for the Bills to play the 2023 AFC Championship in warmer weather at Arrowhead in late January instead of on the frozen tundra in Buffalo? 🤒

No.  No. No.  Stop day drinking.

1 year, 6mil is a "big time signing"?  I don't think so.  The refusal of Beane and McD to use Day 1 and Day 2 draft pick on the IOL is maddening.

They drafted Cody Ford in round 2, it just didn't work.

Saffold was dumped by the Titans for a reason.

Hopefully his play improves to serviceable as the season progresses but he's by far the worst olineman on the team and looks like a bad FA move along with Settle and Crowder.

Titans also traded away their best WR and made the Eagles a powerhouse.

Is there a problem with Pass Pro?  I think its been good to great.  Light years ahead of where it was last year at this time.  Could things be a bit better? Yes.  Should we make a high investment? Yes.  But I feel better that Josh is not just running for his life like he did in the early part of last year.

I’d definitely prefer the game to be in Orchard Park …IF it’s not windy. Like it or not, Josh has a few throws where he misjudges the wind when there’s enough to be a factor. Still amazing and I’d take him over any QB out there. It’s just that nagging sense that in a close game vs a top opponent those couple misses could be costly.

A January game in KC will not be warm.  Believe it or not, Buffalo's average temperatures in January are only slightly lower than KC's.

Aren't you sick of losing playoff games at Arrowhead?  We need the game to be played at home.

They need to put Bates back to LG where he belongs and have Quessenberry start at RG. Instant upgrade at 2 positions without having to make a trade.

Thats a pretty dam good idea.  Saffold looks pretty much done at this point.  Once Boettger is healthy, maybe they can just cut Saffold.

Can't judge interior linemen on single plays like that.   Blocking assignments can be complex and we aren't privy to what was called there.

The real test is coming this sunday in KC.   If Chiefs Dline can get push up the middle it ends up being a tough go for Josh because he starts to bail out earlier as the game goes on, and when that happens he starts taking more shots.   I like Dorsey over Daboll because I feel like he's more sensitive to Josh's well being with the calls after we have a decent lead.

Gonna need to have a big day from the boys in the trenches, we'll see what we're made of....

Agree on Dorsey.  Feel as if he has schemed to neutralize the likes of Donald, Simmons, and Heyward.  All three of them are forces up the middle getting after the QB.  Quick game is the perfect scheme to neutralize those type of players.

I believe it because Buffalo is near water, which will usually be warmer than the surrounding land and help keep temps warmer than they otherwise would be.  KC is surrounded by land, so they don't have that benefit even though they are further south.  When I was in Ohio, some of the coldest temps I have ever been in were in this little town called Mount Gilead which was in the middle of nowhere about 45 minutes north of Columbus and it would regularly be like -5 or -8 there in the mornings when I left for work. Fingers felt like fish sticks they were so cold and my bones hurt.  Could not imagine living in places like Minnesota, North Dakota or even places in NYS like Watertown or Lake Placid where it routinely gets in the --20s and -30s without wind chills in the winter---AND they get Buffalo amounts of snow on top of it, unlike most of the other colder places in the upper Midwest.

Nope, but I majored in it for 2 years at a top 10 Meteorology School before switching majors.

Does that make me an expert?

No.

Does that mean I know a hell of a lot more than the average person walking around?

Yes.
