The 2012 L.A. Kings disagree.

Upsets once in a while are fun.

But the best regular season team in the NHL hasn't won the Cup in 9 years (2012-2013 Blackhawks).

Why should players be invested in a regular season that means so little?

If you want to see more consistent effort.........make it worth something to the players..........there isn't enough at stake.

Eh, I like the long second season, but I do take your point.

The NHL point system and OT are as gimmicky as sports get in North America............so why not have a midseason play-in tournament.........or just give the top 4 teams byes and let the rest of the league fight it out in a 2-3 week series to qualify to play the best.   Still get your long playoff season but you reward the best teams.........and incentivize the worst.   I know these ideas are nothing new but effort like the Sabres have been giving in the first 6 games of the season shouldn't be unusual.

Actually,  the thing that makes hockey a sport where "team play" can beat superstars is that it's the pro sport where you get the least consistent effort from the product from night to night.

When your team is playing hard and smart, it's fun to watch.

The NBA has elicited greater effort by basically turning the players into greedy CEO's on the court.......there is so much money to be made.

The NHL isn't going to have that kinda' $ motivation so they really should be looking to do things to make the regular season more important.    The playoffs are way too ***** long.   Byes for the top teams would be good.   Nobody needs to see a 1 versus 8 series in round 1.   Let the barely qualified teams fight it out in short series for the right to play the teams that dominated the regular season etc..

The NBA is also the most predictable team sport in the world. The outcomes are pre-determined by where the players agree in groups of 3 or 4 to play each offseason.  Effort is irrelevant.

We definitely need to see #1s vs #8s.  Upsets happen every 2 or 3 years in the NHL.  Its happened like 4 times in NBA history, including when round 1 was a best of 5.

Shortening the seasons would help to that end.  The lockout seasons have been fun to watch since you can't afford to go on a couple of 10 game skids, every game matters.

I actually dig the NBA play-in round they did this year.

100000% agree with whoever complained about the OT/Shootout win points system being super lame.  Makes games with little meaning have even less meaning.

I would be on board with a mid-season tournament.  Would be cool if they could even include European/KHL teams at some point.

‘What You Need to Know About the Chicago Blackhawks Abuse Report’

Quote

The full report outlining the investigation into allegations against former Chicago Blackhawks video coach, Brad Aldrich, has been released, leading to seismic changes within the team's front office and beyond. Here's a breakdown of what you need to know.

Stan Bowman is out as General Manager and President of Hockey Operations. Al MacIsaac is out as Vice President of Hockey Operations. The NHL announced that they have fined the Blackhawks $2 million for its "inadequate procedures and mishandling". Blackhawks owner and Chairman, Rocky Wirtz announced that anyone involved in this incident back in 2010 will no longer be involved with the organization moving forward.

And the ripple effect has only just begun.

That's just some disturbing, sick ***** that happened. From turning their back to players making fun of him at practice in front of coaches?

***** the Blackhawks.

Well seeing the Sabres started 9-3 the past 2 seasons, it was not hard to imagine they would start out like that again.

They actually started 4-6-2 (2-3-1 first 6 games) last year.  They were 9-2-1 (5-0-1) the previous year and 6-4-2 (3-3-0) the year before that.  But that was with better players.

Isles fan here but good for the Sabres. They have been down for so long its nice to see them playing well again. Hope it continues all season and they make the playoffs. I can relate because the Isles were horrible for a long time as well and then things changed with Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz running the show.

The Isles home opener isn't until Nov 20 vs Calgary. They are currently 3-2-1 on a season opening 13 game road trip. But I am definitely going to some games this year. If you are in the NYC area or travel to this area then you and other Sabres fans should come check out a game especially when the Sabres play at UBS arena. From what "people in the know" say its a fantastic looking arena. Here is a photo of UBS.

What I really like about that arena is how the majority of seating is in the lower bowl. You don't see upper decks as small as that barn. Gets the fans more engaged. Nice design.

Hockey, more than any other sport, relies on coaching. What a difference Don Granato is making. If he's not the frontrunner for Coach of the Year at this early stage there's something wrong. You are seeing the McBeane/Bills template at work with the Sabres. Get rid of the locker room cancers, get guys to play for each other, give 100% effort every night.

He is doing a nice job. It is still very early but it looks like the Sabres have turned the corner. Obviously over 82 games there will be ups and downs in the season. The key will be how they handle the rough stretches. Hopefully Sabres fans can enjoy playoff hockey this year.

I’m hearing this morning that several NHL owners are “very concerned and unhappy” with Gary Bettman’s leadership. I think even the owners realize it’s time for a change in the NHL and culture only changes from the top down. It is time to FIRE BETTMAN. 1/
NRD says the framework of the reported Vegas-Buffalo deal that got held up on Friday was Eichel for Krebs, Tuch, Brisson OR Coghlan, and a conditional 1st based on Eichel’s playing time/availability

Needless to say, it better not have been the Sabres who backed out on that.
That would be a good haul for Eichel, let's hope Vegas keeps struggling and we can make it happen.

Well Skinner is already halfway to his goal total from last year. Good on ya, Jeff.  This pairing of Skinner and Tage is looking pretty ok and Cozens looked better without Skinner on his wing from what I saw, which was about 50% of the game due to distractions.

Some bad puck luck on couple of the goals against.  Maybe one or two Anderson wants back. Some bouncing, fluttering pucks through screens.

Hertl is a stud.  He totally undressed Dahlin to put this game out of reach.

Jack Quinn and JJ Peterka are putting up some nice points in Rochester so far.  I wonder if we get to see Quinn at some point or if management is content to let him play another full year in the A?

I think they may want these two kids attached at the hip for the full year.  I'm ok if that's the plan, only call them up together.

Do we like the return on this trade given the circumstances?  I know nothing about Krebs or Tuch.

I'm fine with it. Not giddy, but more than OK.

Tuch will bring some jam and has offensive skill. Plus, my wife is a friend of one of his family members that live in our neighborhood. Maybe I can score some free tix out of this trade? LOL

Krebs is a work in progress but has skill and is a leader.

The first obviously remains to be seen.

I’m underwhelmed. I can’t believe it took this long to get that return. Why some team didn’t offer a deal like this (or better) long ago is beyond me. I guess teams really were scared by Eichel’s injury. But I can guarantee that there will be some GM’s wishing they would have beat this offer once Eichel is back on the ice.

Tuch is a nice top 6 W if he can stay healthy (3rd year in a row he’s missed significant time). And he grew up a Sabres fan, so I’m sure that held value to Kevyn Adams (him wanting players that are “proud to wear the Jersey”).

Krebs was VGK top prospect but he’s been struggling in the NHL this season. I really like him though. Definitely a nice piece to add.

The 1st will be a late pick but this looks like it could be a deep draft (definitely deeper than last year).

I was really hoping for at least 1 more big piece but it is what it is.

Definitely less than what Eichel is worth, but clearly the injury hurt the return.

No doubt Eichel is worth way more than this.

I just pray Krebs turns into something good. If he doesn’t this trade will hurt for many years to come.

I'm at the point of whatever. A couple decent pieces and a 1st rounder to cleanse the organization. I'll take it considering Jack's, IMO, ***** attitude and injury. I don't look at this as much different than when Beane came in and started trading the Bills more talented players. Culture obviously does matter.
