Didn't expect it now. Thought it was nailed on to happen after the season.

They probably already know who they want to hire and are getting a head start.  You don’t want to be the last team looking for a HC.  I would expect a few more firings in the next two weeks (Quinn, Shurmur, maybe Kitchens).

Not shocked. Watching All or Nothing in the summer I was shocked how little coaching I saw. Now I know the way these things are edited is about being good for TV but every team meeting they showed seemed to be:

"We gotta have this one. Do it for the guy next to you. Don't let him down."

No correction. No fundamentals. No different approach to the gameplan. Just more rah- rah. I came away from that documentary totally unimpressed. People have suggested his name in connection with Dallas but even Jason Garrett did more coaching in the Cowboys All or Nothing season. I think Ron is a good guy. He came across as someone who was respected in the building. But seriously I was left questioning how good of a coach he was.

If the owner is seeing that day after day then no wonder they moved on.

Good luck Perry Fewell.

Rivera is a meathead HC.  A nice, well mannered meathead but a meathead.

Pretty amazing that he lasted that long but having a franchise QB with MVP potential will take you a long way.

As I was watching their Redskins debacle unfold it occurred to me that this was probably the NFL's next tear down.

Keuchly,  Addison(shorter contract term Shaq replacement), McCoy(shorter contract term Phillips replacement)..........all guys I could see being Bills targets this offseason.

Marrone too.

Yea I did think they were seeking a head start. Maybe on a college coach given the timing..... whisper it.... Jim Harbaugh?

You missed a lot of games

Tbh I haven’t watched a lot of panthers games this year but from an outsider looking it must be hard to win with a banged up Newton and A 2nd year undrafted QB

Hmmm. I know those shows are ultimately about entertainment. But in every other season I have seen some coaching. I think Rivera is a good leader. I think guys want to play for him. But I am not convinced on him as a coach. 3 winning seasons in 9 years is not getting it done.

I think the Xs and Os stuff is a little overrated, to be honest. The key attributes of good head coaches are organization skills, ability to motivate, and -- not least -- a nose for good assistants (i.e., the guys who handle the Xs and Os). Belichick skews everyone's perceptions about this, but always remember that Parcells' great skill wasn't Xs/Os, but rather hiring Belichick, Coughlin, Payton, and many others.

I'm not saying it's not important, mind you; it's just that I think a really good Xs and Os guy like Adam Gase is a far worse head coach than a guy like Mike Tomlin. It's not easy managing crazy people, and I guarantee you that there are about 10 of them on every NFL team.

Forgot about Marrone.

I think the Jim Harbaugh brand is irreparably damaged.

Boy! Does the NFL have a short memory or what? Recent two time coach of the year (2013 and 2015). His starting QB is out all season and they almost beat the Saints 10 days ago! Just grab him as a special assistant!! All his experience with Can Newton will come in handy for JA's offense as well as defense against Lamar.

New owner means new regime.
He got two seasons and both were underwhelming.

And I totally agree with that. Have said it on here many times. Leadership is the number 1 thing I look for in a HC candidate, way above Xs and Os. But someone has to be doing that stuff and there was none of it on display in that programme the whole series. Contrast it with Hard Knocks this year and I saw and heard Gruden and his staff correcting and coaching.

I read a lot of people saying it was dirty to fire him early but I’m sure he was ready to go. It’s win win for all. Carolina gets an early jump in the hiring process. They also get to try out some new younger coaches like Norv Turners son as offensive coordinator. Rivera gets to help his young coaches he hired gain better experience for their next jobs. Rivera is going to get whatever he wants at his next job. He can go on tv a little or possibly land a better head coach job next season. What’s his worst case scenario from all this? Defensive coordinator? He’s well respected around the league he will have a million opportunities.

I think meathead is a little strong. In his two stints as DC at Chicago and SD, he took statistically bad defenses in the first season to elite ones in the next couple of seasons. Also, the NFL is one of the few arenas where high-functioning meatheads can thrive (even if not win it all).  Rivera's best comp seems to me to be Vrabel -- both longtime NFL LBs.  I mean, you can't last for a decade as an NFL LB and NOT be a meathead.

He'll take the Cowboys job after Garrett gets fired at the end of the year.

That’s a classless move. Wait till after the season is over.

Rivera is a great coach and better person. Gained a lot of respect for him after watching the Amazon series on the Panthers.

They probably want to jump on one of the college guys since most of their seasons are over now

Very curious to see who else is gone this offseason from Carolina. In the very least, seems like a relative certainty that Cam will be moving on somewhere, and there will be a lot of musical chairs with QBs.

I think Marrone and Foles will be done in Jacksonville too.

Perry Fewell -- second time interim head coach.

Interesting career note, that.

Also: I wonder if it's hard for Panthers fans to see the best parts of their front office/coaching staff (Beane, McDermott, et al) leave while Rivera remained, only to then see Rivera get fired any way.

Fewell is “The Fitz” of coaching!

Foles for sure. Marrone definitely seems to be in jeopardy as well.

Seems like some combination of the following teams will have new QBs:

  • Tampa - Guessing Jameis returns next season, but we'll see.
  • Tennessee - Seem likely to re-sign Tannehill if he keeps it up, but we'll see.
  • Miami - Might forego QB in the draft and wait for next year, so this could be an option for a vet like Cam.
  • Pittsburgh - possible retirement, but I doubt it.
  • Indy - Probably stick it out with Brissett or draft.
  • Jacksonville - Seems like Foles is likely done already and not sure if Minshew will be unquestioned starter.
  • LA Chargers - Rivers might retire or might just leave.
  • Las Vegas - Not sure what Gruden thinks of Carr; he's been solid this year for the most part.
  • New England - Brady might retire or just leave.
  • Cincinnati - Almost certainly drafting someone.
  • Atlanta - Could potentially try to blow things up?

You knew this run would come to an end at some point. Rivera has done a decent job with the Panthers. In all honesty I expect him to take a year or two off before looking to get back into the coaching ranks.

Brissett has been pretty good this year. If they had a real Kicker, they'd be 8-4/9-3.

In my opinion..........if Fitzy didn't get hot and cost the Bills their rightful #1 overall pick as the least talented team in the NFL..........which became Cam Newton........Rivera would have long since worked himself back down to LB coach by now.    When he went back to the old San Diego well for Norv Turner I knew his goose was cooked.   If that's all your connections can yield you in 2018 you probably aren't staying involved enough with the coaching community.

How so on the Harbaugh thing?  He has won everywhere he has been.  Coached in a Super Bowl with a running back at QB.    All the Michigan honks expecting him to come in and win National Championship after National Championship forgot their program wasnt a consistent National Championship contender since the mid seventies.   Harbaugh is a really good coach.

If Jones moves on from Garrett it is a 100% lock he names Kellen Moore the next HC.

I don't think he's lived up to expectations in Ann Arbor and his ego has gotten out of control.  That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if some NFL team hired him.  Maybe the Jets...

He may be an ego maniac, but if he hasnt lived up to expectations, the expectations were too high.   He is the best coach Michigan has had since Carr, and his win percentage falls in line with what Michigan has always been when the program is being run well.     Any NFL or College team that wants a winning culture will let him run things the way he wants them to be run.

I see a lot of people in here who have a misguided view of Ron Rivera.

I live in Charlotte and often watch Bills games at my Uncle's house. He has lived here 40 years and is both a Bills fan and Panthers fan (when he tells people that he ALWAYS adds that if they were to meet in the super bowl he would root for the Bills)

Anyhow he sets up a second TV in his living room and watches both games when they are on at the same time.

I've seen PLENTY Panthers games the last couple years. Ron Rivera is NOT a good head coach. Terrible game management and has a team that consistently underachieves. Yes he rode his defense and MVP QB to a Superbowl where he was terribly outcoached. His firing was deserved and MOST Panthers fans are happy about the move. Trust me on that.

I considered it reasonably likely that Daboll would get poached. I had presumed that Dorsey would step into the OC role, making for a seamless transition.

If BOTH get taken? No bueno.
