Is there a role for Tyler Kroft on the Bills?

Recommended Posts

I personally like what I saw from croom last year so I'd be good with him and knox getting all the time personally.  Is croom eligible to be active now?

Is there a role for a TE in the Bills offense? There hasn’t been such a role for the last 40 years. Why start now? We’ve been doing just fine playing with 10 men!

Obviously you are exaggerating to try to make impact since K-Gun was NOT named after Kelly but the TE Keith McKeller but it does the opposite and makes people dismiss it as foolish.

As my debate teacher taught me: exaggeration is a tool of those unprepared in battle of wits.

Kroft is a pretty well rounded TE.  That means he can block and he can catch the ball.  He's not the blocker that Lee Smith is supposed to be, but then Lee Smith has had a ton of penalties.  In the near term, I would probably give Kroft some of the reps that Lee Smith has been getting to see if he can block well enough AND cut down some on the penalties Buffalo has been giving up with Smith.  Long term, I don't see any particular reason to keep him longer than his contract creates an uncomfortable dead cap burden.

How many penalties per ton?  Are you counting the ones where zebras were blind and are you one who complains about them as well?

Kroft is decent when healthy, however, I think Knox is already better and had a much higher ceiling.

Right now I would be dressing Knox, Kroft and Sweeney.

Seen enough of Lee Smith, when we need a “big blocking set” put out Sweeney or another tackle or both.

Next year I bring in another TE and move on from Kroft.  Knox’s development and Kroft’s injuries make him way overpaid for his contribution.

Only if one of them is lined up inline wearing an eligible number between 84 and 86.

I think that rule is negated by the Pegulas owning two sports franchises in the same city, but I'm not sure.

I want to see more Sweeney. Knox clearly looks like a potentially elite player if he does what he’s supposed to do. Lee Smith should be the designated blocking TE but truthfully by the start of next year I feel Fort Knox will be such a powerhouse that the other guys just won’t matter.

It's Hard Knocks, geeez I have to fix everything around here

Hell yes.  They should be in double TE set most of the game with Knox and Kroft. Bench Lee Smith.  From that grouping they can line up in almost any formation they want. They can split out either TE, they can go 5 wide with Singletary split out. They can still go deep with Brown and run all kinds of pick and combo routes underneath.

I wanted Jesse James from Pittsburgh in FA and of course I wanted Hockenson or Fant instead of Oliver.  But Kroft can be capable and Knox looks like he could be a beast.

I really don't understand the salary cap comments. The Bills will be in top 5 teams with cap money to spend.  Lawson will be coming off the books. They have no one to pay.  They are set to target one or two big time fee agents (OLB and DE) and still have a net loss of players.

I like him but he has had a problem staying healthy and Knox has a similar skillset but a higher ceiling. I think he just lost out being hurt. Very much at risk of being cut after the season.

at this point, i have to agree with his trajectory.
Did not give up hope for him to turn it up a bit yet still.
Love TEs to a fault. need Josh to feel the same  : )

with a Dodge shadow and Red Green ? you cannot lose !

Dodge shadows are the cars of Greek Gods.

and never was fan of the Kroft signing.  He had one decent year.  Hopefully, we move after the year since Knox has shown himself to be a player. We should still be looking to upgrade and run more 2 TE sets.

its weird how behind the times the Bills are.  Most good qbs have a good TE.  They are matchup nightmares. But nah, we’re good with Derek Fine.

....nauseates the hell out of me how historically we've been smoked in the seam by opposing TE's......teams faced with "3rd and long" continually smoked our azz for 1st downs....they laughed at "3rd and long".....how about the Pats with the Gronk/Hernandez duo and their damage?....will never understand how Post Kelly era the QB spot at #1 and the TE spot at #2 were the most neglected.....

I feel your pain- the seam then draws coverage towards the middle and opens the edges. It is so frustrating.

I was not thrilled with Kroft signing either. he was coming off another injury.
Perhaps Bills were quite surprised to get Knox? and then the bonus in Sweeny (my boy )
The hate on Lee Smith is justifiable of course. But he does tear it up when blocking downfield.. risk reward. and he has caught he ball actually. who figured ?

i am not high on Kroft, but he can change my mind down the stretch

The only reason they brought in "bad knees"  Clay. run that seam, get downfield.

Great weapon  as a play call

Smith is a terrible TE but I heard the reasoning for him is he essentially another o linemen and could play in a pinch.  Personally, I’m fine with moving in from him but he’s here at least the rest of the season.

Is there a role for any TE on this team?

Sometimes I feel WR/TE are totally irrelevant for us, especially TE position.

It is quite noticeable how many TE's at other teams make big catches and get big targets...but we just never notice/see it.

I would love to be a TE focused team

Well you have to have a talented TE or your team is like majority of teams a TE that catches 3-4 passes

Being a BIlls fan in Baltimore just watch the Ravens. They have TE all over the place. One always gets open and they get huge plays almost every series.  We get one huge play a game. To make things worse their running OC is the one we ran out of town :(

I was never a fan of the Kroft signing from the get go. just another player added to an ever growing list of players we've added where you can't wait to get rid of.

But theres been a role for him this whole time. Its just that he hasn't done anything with it.

Knox has been a nice surprise & has stood out from the pack because cmon, it really isn't that hard to do. All you need to do is catch a few passes & you're at the top of the list given the group we have. But Knox has been a godsend.

Krofts been out there the past few games but you wouldn't even know it. And only reason we know Smith is out there is from the referee calling his name over & over again.

Like others have said, I'd much rather cut back on Smith's snaps & have Sweeney play. He's got good hands & shows a bit of toughness to him. He at the very least isn't invisible out there & will make a play or 2. See what you have with him & move on from Kroft asap.

Since Kroft came back and Lee got more snaps, our offense has taken a major step back.

Knox was making big plays early in the year (and dropping big plays...but he's a rookie). Even sweeney was doing well. Those two veteran tight ends are actually hurting the team.
