Dude, I am going to so enjoy seeing all of the “Edmunds had a bad year” and “he didn’t look good, he’s out of position” ninnies eat their words this season.

Isn’t it possible that he could have just improved from his rookie year?  Personally, he was the least of my concerns but he definitely had some things he could improve on.  Instead of being angry at people thinking he could improve, be happy that he does. ?

That’s his point , people were saying he had no clue, too tall, out of position among other things and that he couldn’t play mlb. They thought a rookie 20 year old was already at his peak

He isn't being angry. I think all @eballis saying that he's tired of all the posters who are overly negative to young players, that prematurely call people busts and want players benched or coaches fired. It would be nice if people could admit they were wrong and maybe look for the positives in a rookie and give the kid time to grow from playing.

He had some REALLY bad games last year.... and some real good ones. Yes, he was young but he was also very inconsistent.

Hows that wrong to say?

I think fans just want to see him take the next step and improve upon certain things.

I think the distinction is that while sometimes he “didn’t” play well, some people were saying he “couldn’t” play well in the middle. They often said he needed to be moved. To say he “couldn’t” will hopefully turn out to be wrong.  I’m pretty sure 99.9% of us want nothing but the best for our team.

Why would i do that ?
I hope very much he kicks tail this year.

at times he looked amazing and other he took a poor angle or wrong. he looked bad when he did that. but he was a very young rookie with a lot on his shoulders. I never lost faith in him. even though he had some tough mistakes.

No doubt he has a fine ceiling in body and mind for us Bills Fans.

 Love the Kid

needs a haircut though

I really feel like reading through this thread and others that there's been an over correction of the false premise that preseason performance is incredibly important. While it's not the be all, end all, it means SOMETHING.

You can see the improvement in Edmunds game. It's obvious. I didn't see this mean streak or recognition last preseason. He looked lost. Now; not so much. I'm sure teams are still going to gameplan to take advantage of his past overpursuit, but I feel much better about Edmunds based on what I've seen. It's still football.

But Nathan Peterman! That's a complete anomaly and the QB position is unique.

Who’s angry? I’m thrilled that all of the knee-jerk idiots who couldn’t see a 20-year-old learning on the job will learn a life lesson about jumping to conclusions.

are there any examples of folks who wrote him off completely based on the 2018 season?

Like Biscuit said, he had a few poor games last year.  -Especially- defending against the run.   Nothing wrong with pointing that out.

There was a ton of chatter about him being out of position and how he should be moved outside. More so that he didn’t have the instincts to play LB at the NFL level. I had this asinine argument with people. It was insane.

He was out of position a lot last year. He can also be much improved this year because it was only his rookie season. I don't understand why so many people on this board feel personally attacked when a player is criticized.

20. Years. Old. Given the prime responsibility on the defense. Wow, it’s amazing he needed to learn on the job.

Those of us with an ounce of foresight saw what the Bills were doing, giving this kid a year to learn as they rebuilt the roster. A lot of you immediately went the lazy, typical route of criticizing the move and blaming the organization.

Yeah, I felt like he might have been too tall and thin to take on NFL linemen and in the middle and would have been better as an outside LB.  He had some games where he didn't seem stout enough in middle, that New England game where we gave up 300 rushing yards comes to mind.

He didn't have any experience playing the Mike LB in school and I was thinking how he just seemed better fit to be in space as a weakside LB, a natural fit for him.   Need to be fast, good at coverage and many times you're chasing the play from the backside which he's great at.

He sure seems comfortable in there now though.   The QB of the defense, just had his first legal beer a few months ago.   Nice job to the Cover 1 dude who put this vid together and great work Tremaine.... keep it going man!   We have Saquon, Leveon Bell and Mixon first three games of the year.  Assuming Bell is any good still, that's 3 ninja running backs in a row, the kid needs to be poppin out there.

His length and pass coverage skills plus lateral speed may have suggested he would be excellent playing outside with a TE. not a knock on him.

I don't recall anyone calling him a bust and I don't know of a single post that said he could not improve.  Some folks on here legitimately feel he is better suited to OLB.  I really don't know. I feel like he could be more disruptive as a pass rushing OLB but I grew up watching Lawrence Taylor and Derrick Thomas. Edmunds looks like a 10 pound smaller version of Urlacher to me. Give this kid a couple years and he may be the best linebacker in the league.

Past is prologue.  Let's evaluate his play moving forward.

This thread can't be legitimate.

I heard right here on this very forum that Edmunds needed to be switched to Will linebacker and was being miscast as a Mike.

When will McDermott stop wasting this kid's career?!

He played like a rookie.  Those highlights were very encouraging and show that he is learning.  That's all anyone here wants.

I think most fans said they need to see Edmunds improve this year if he is to remain starting MLB because he was exposed at the position in several games.

What is wrong with that?

There's a thing that is somewhat pervasive in our culture; where it is right/wrong, left/right, polar choices with nothing in between.

Not saying eball is doing that as I generally like his posts, just that it is a thing.

Maybe there was a minority saying the kid would never make it, but all I can remember is folks seeing how talented he was covering the field, how fast, but he was lost reading his gap fits stopping the run and needed to improve.

There was some talk that with his height, bend, and speed he could be an impact DE...he probably could pull that off if that is what the coaches wanted from him - he is that physically gifted.

Folks that say a first year rookie will never learn this or that, I generally think are a bit foolish or impatient or both - that goes for Allen too.

Wondering last year if that was the right way to use his skill set should be something we can bat around. Same with saying a player has to improve in areas of their game at the position they are in.

Yes. My thought in the offseason was that he'd be an ideal fit as an OLB. All pro worthy. At this point, I've seen enough growth to believe he could possibly be an all pro MLB. The needle has moved. I feel like this was the prevailing consensus. But as ScottLaw said, we/they don't get many opportunities to say I told you so. I'd personally like to see them have far more opportunities like this.(Even if it premature)

Can't wait!

Hes looked good in preseason. Hope it translates to the regular season.

At age 20, Edmund's life suddenly takes a 360 turn when he finds himself thrust in to a MLB role in the NFL. This was baptism by fire and it appears that Edmunds has emerged better equipped to command an NFL defense.

I'll admit it, I was a Leighton Vander Esch honk. I wanted LVE more than Edmunds. When Buffalo moved back up I swore they were taking LVE.

I was very hard on Edmunds his first year, he struggled many times early in his first year.

But the young (20!) man learned how to call a defense that ended 2nd not only in yards allowed, but also defensive DVOA.

He improved as the year went on. He began to play at NFL speed and it has carried over to preseason.

I don't think LVE could call a defense yet, for Edmunds it's now becoming natural at 21.

Edmunds is going to be Buffalo's Defensive anchor with Tre White for a decade.

Born by fire seemed to have worked with Edmunds, McDermott knew this was his guy, his next Keuchly.

I have loved what I've seen from Edmunds in the preseason. He is everywhere, and calling good defenses.

I was wrong about Tremaine 'the train' Edmunds. I just want him to lay a pace setting lick from time to time.

What you're saying isn't wrong. The hyperbolic reaction to the bad play is what I was referring to. What you've said above is exactly what this for, good logical discussion. The only thing I'd disagree with you on is whether he had really bad games. I think he had really bad plays and some really good plays. When the coaches are throw a 20 year old into the deep end so he can grow evaluating the player play by play and how he bounces back from mistakes is more appropriate.

Why would they eat their words? He did have some real struggles last year with fundamentals and the run game. It was legitimate to say that. I always said I was optimistic he would come on for the trip because in college he was much improved in 2017 as compared to 2016 and I expected that quick learning ability to improve to translate to the pros. Doesn't mean I am going to change my view on the rookie year he had. He made the hard plays and didn't make enough of the routine ones.

So this thread will mainly be comprised of "I told you so" posts as opposed to the fact that Edmunds is leaps and bounds ahead of where he was last year? Got it.

Why not? A lot of us had to endure the likes of Badol talking ***** about him all last year.

Edmunds is continuing on the trajectory we saw the last month of the season in his rookie year, when it became evident the game was slowing down for him and he starting becoming a force.

He has better command out there. You can see how he has woken up. Being a rookie is tough enough, then a MLB on top of that.

There are a number of "experts" on this board who said Edmunds is miscast for the role, and who didn't contemplate what was being thrown at this 20 year old.  They jumped to conclusions as they typically do, and I personally enjoy it when these "experts" are shown to be no more proficient at predicting NFL success or failure than any of the rest of us who are "just fans."

I'll be just as happy when Josh Allen proves all of the "advanced stats" guys wrong and succeeds.

Okay, fair enough... but that is more the "Edmunds can't play MLB" or "Edmunds is a bust" rather than the people who jsut said "he struggled last year" because those people were objectively commenting on what was on tape as far as my eyes could see.

He did have struggles for sure.  However, there are a few people on here that were saying he lacks instincts to play MLB and needs to be moved outside.
