Big Turk Posted January 25, 2017 Share Posted January 25, 2017 (edited) On a Pittsburgh radio station said he is not committing to returning next season and is contemplating if he wants to continue playing taking into account everything with his health, future health, family ,etc and wants to make sure its the right decision whichever way he ends up... That would be devastating for Pittsburgh to lose him out of the blue... He used to be a killer on the move but this year he couldn't get his feet going and ended up making a lot of awkward, off-balance wobbly duck throws. I enjoy good offensive football and dating back to that Bills game I watched him every week and he looks old. In a much less physical NFL........relatively speaking.........like 1996-Jim-Kelly old. If he plans on playing out that contract he needs to get Manning/Brady/Brees serious about his physical conditioning. He's putting his body on the line out there and if he doesn't think he has a chance to win it all then what's the point. I think ultimately he comes back for one more year then says he's going to retire...Only to come back again and again. Pretty typical at the end of a player's career to want out then miss it but not want to have to go through camp and all that. I do think he has lost some of his ability to create outside of the pocket though - Badol is right that he looks slower these days. He'll be back in 2017 but how much longer he plays now is a genuine question. I can see him maybe playing 2 more and then calling it quits. I think it might have been a guarded message to the Pittsburgh hierarchy who have a lot of big FA decisions to make this year. Ben is saying... "okay the end is in sight... start loading up for a final run and kick the salary cap can down the road as much as you need to do it." Rodgers actually gave a pretty similar message to Green Bay's decision makers as well. Ben has been to 3 dances and won it all twice.... I have a friend that went to Pitt for college & he has a ton of friends down there. They are all diehard Steeler fans & it was very surprising most of them want to move on from Big Ben. As you said, they say he is not very liked around town. My friend who is a diehard Bills fan always tells them, "be careful what you wish for." It is also suprisising most of his friends don't like Tomlin either. I think you classified it the best. Steeler fans are very spoiled. They don't know how good they have it. Favre did it for like 5 years I can see this...a lot of the younger players care more about making highlight-reel plays and getting paid than they do about winning. That said, I don't see that alone as a reason to retire. To me, if you can physically play and you're still in good shape, then why not keep playing? My brother-in-law went to college with him and said there were all kinds of not so nice rumors invilovng him and women. Probably not surprisingly considering his history since but.... I think some of this info is dated. He seems to have turned things around over the last 5 years and I have some friends who see him pretty regularly and friends that hang with his family, and my wife has had some interaction with his wife and mom, and everyone seems to have a pretty positive reaction to him. Roeth would have to repay his pro-rated signing bonus if he retires, I believe. That would be $18.4M, which is a lot of coins to take out of the family piggy bank. OTOH if he doesn't have the fire in the belly, he should retire. Card shows? I was hoping he could avoid more sexual assault cases. Big Ben is now a good husband and daddy and Vick loves puppy dogs and takes them to puppy dog class. Heitz Posted January 25, 2017 Share Posted January 25, 2017 Pretty much everyone on Sirius yesterday (including Farve) said that Ben will be back - he just went through a tough season that ended in a tough loss, so no one was surprised to hear him say he's going to step-back and take a look at things. In fact, said that's the smart thing to do. Tomlin also mentioned that this isn't the first time Ben has talked about stepping away... IMO, he's back next year. So in other words, unlike Big Ben wanting collect every last dollar, Brady can play for less because he doesn't need the money and play for the love of the sport. Doesn't change the fact that when he broke with his usual method to go and get them he did it to gear up for a run (which when you have a top flight QB that is coming towards the end is absolutely the right play). I think an even better example is when he signed Welker (giving up a 2nd and 7th round pick) and traded for Randy Moss for a 4th round pick for the 2007 season.
