RD 3, Pick 80: DT Adolphus Washington, The Ohio State U

On Washington, from WalterFootball, sounds like a great quality pick in the 3rd round:

Summary: In 2015, all the attention was on Joey Bosa because of what he did during Ohio State's National Championship run in 2014, but Washington was arguably the Buckeyes most consistent defensive lineman last fall.

. . . As a senior, Washington recorded 49 tackles with seven tackles for a loss, four sacks, a forced fumble and a pick-six. Bosa had all the attention, but on a weekly basis, Washington was causing havoc at the line of scrimmage.

At the Senior Bowl, Washington had an impressive week. He dominated the first practice, killing the offensive linemen in the one-on-ones with explosion out of his stance, speed to close, strength to shed blocks and speed-to-power. In the following days, Washington wasn't as overwhelming, but he still won a lot of reps and was very tough on offensive lineman. . . .

As a pro, Washington will be on the field to get after the quarterback. With his quickness at the point of attack and ability to get to the signal-caller, he has Pro Bowl potential and could produce quality sack totals in the NFL.

. . . Washington is on the bubble of the first and second round.

I haven't particularly evaluated Washington, but he did flash a few times on the videos I looked at for some of the other Ohio State players. This pick is very simple for me. The guy has been drafted to replace Kyle Williams. 2016 will be Kyle's last year as a Bill and maybe last year in the league. Washington gives them some necessary depth for 2016 - they lost Charles and Carrington - and I expect that by 2017 he will be a starter. He isn't the nose tackle that I know a lot think we needed, but he is a defensive tackle who can apply pressure up the middle.

As for those crying out for offense.... I didn't have a single wide receiver as value at that pick. Kenny Lawler is the next of two remaining receivers on my board and I had him higher than Braxton Miller. I did think they might trade back in the 3rd and target a receiver towards the end of the round, but if they were picking at their spot there was not a receiver that made sense for me. The offensive players that might have made sense were Westerman at guard or Murphy at tackle.

I think he's a prototype 5-tech.

I don't see much potential for him to play the nose until he adds significant bulk to his lower body--right now he's top-heavy.

He's got really good length and decent power.

I'd still be looking for a DJ Reader type later.

Side note: cannot fathom what NE saw to make them pick Vincent Valentine in the 3rd round. To me, he's a less effective, less athletic, lazy version of DJ Reader that should've been a 6th rounder.

Of course, they may have scored huge with Cyrus Jones in the 2nd, so there's that.

Gunner - I agree this was a better pick given the talent available at that pick. We now have three very talented players in the front 7 to mold, and with these last 4 picks we stay close to the board in BPA. If you keep getting influenced by need in the later rounds you might just get a guy, vs. finding the most talented person.

Overall, I'm very happy with the draft. Now they have to prove it in camp.

If "bad character" means wanting a BJ, I think there are a lot of bad characters around.

as a fan watching the games he's always played at a high level. On the film they say he isn't passionate on 1st and 2nd down which in college is almost always run plays. In the NFL it's more passing so I think he will be a nice chess piece. IMO he's round 1-2 guy based on college career but dropped due to combine performance and the late suspension. He didn't have any other off field issues that I know of

Urban Meyer on NFL Network said he's a DT with a DE skillset. He sounds exactly like the type of lineman Rex covets.

sounds exactly like a younger version of Kyle honestly when you put it that way. And make no mistake about it, he will eventually be his replacement. Give it 1 year at most. Probably less considering Kyles recent injury issues. Every year the last few years he's been pretty banged up.

Anyone who watched the AFC Championship game and Super Bowl last season knows that the key to Denver's defensive success was the incredible interior penetration they were getting on passing downs. Von Miller is a beast but he was absolutely the beneficiary of the tremendous play by the Broncos' defensive tackles. They were terrific.

Do people not realize that defensive line rotational players see 25-35 snaps a game? They play a LOT...probably more than any other reserve players save Nickel CB and slot WR...nobody remembers how we got pissed late in games when we had rotational players in on the DLine that couldn't stop the run and kept giving up first downs?

Solid pick...this D is getting nasty

Right now Corbin Bryant is a starter in their new conventional 3-4 along with Dareus and Kyle Williams. Hughes and Shaq Lawson are OLB.

They needed quality depth at least, and desperately so.

I'm sure Jarran Reed was an option for them over Ragland - hopefully Ragland's coverage issues aren't as bad as advertised.

This kind of statement that Rex is calling the shots drives me nuts. They hired Rex more than a year ago. They immediately acquired two quarterbacks, traded a popular LB for a RB, signed a WR in Percy Harvin for $6m, outbid the Fins for a play making TE, signed one of the top FB, signed or drafted two starting OG, and drafted another RB. Oh, and drafted a CB in the second round.

Rex was definitely calling all the shots because he wants his guys on defense.

But that was last year. Now it's this year.

Pretty sure someone on TBD has booed every pick

Good call Heitz...just watched the full video at the bottom of this article and it's pretty impressive. Washington gets a sack, a couple really impressive TFLs, and some additional QB hits and hurries. However, more impressive than that is the fact that he lined up next to Bosa and Michigan consistently double teams Washington while leaving only the OT to deal with Bosa.

I was expecting offense with our third round pick like most ppl here, but the more I think about and research this guy, I don't mind it...he's super quick and has a rare skillset in terms of interior pass rush ability. Kyle's not getting any younger and we were seriously thin on the D-line before adding Washington...the other added bonus might be that this pick will help Lawson and Ragland perform even better. Adding all three to our front seven should make that group scary again...

From Vic Carucci:

Going with a defensive tackle in the third round was sensible. Whether Ohio State’s Adolphus Washington was the wise choice there is debatable. Most scouting assessments I’ve heard termed him as “just a guy” and that the Bills might have reached a bit for a player who would have been available in the fourth round and perhaps even lower. Never mind the character concerns created by his arrest for soliciting an undercover officer posing as a prostitute and subsequent suspension from the Fiesta Bowl. The guy hasn’t shown a whole lot as a player to convince multiple talent-evaluators that he has what it takes to make an impact in the NFL. Two of the biggest knocks against him are poor instincts, especially when it comes to reacting to misdirection plays, and inconsistent effort. He’s plenty big (6-3 and 301 pounds) and strong, but doesn’t always show the necessary awareness of what’s happening around him. As a result, he can be taken out of plays, which would figure to happen more often in the NFL. But new Bills defensive line coach John Blake loves Washington and, by most accounts, managed to sell the decision-makers on him. Should they have been as eager as they apparently were to give in? A third-round choice is not a throwaway. The Bills needed some good defensive line depth, but whether Washington can provide it as a big question mark.

Consider that the Bills have drafted into the strength of this draft, which was D-line. In years past, they have drafted "against the tide" and taken positional needs in draft classes that were very weak at those positions. Other than a temporary filler, those moves backfired in their face, leaving the Bills going right back again to re-address those holes.

He may have fallen on the board because he was suspended for OSU's bowl game for soliciting a vice squad officer in early December. Sounds like Rex's kind of guy.

I agree, had he been a Whaley guy, he would have restricted himself to interntet porn only.

Take this fwiw but the real reason urban suspended him for the bowl game was not for being arrested for solicitation. It was because he was armed. The gun was registered to him. But that was why. He doesn't allow the players to carry guns per team policy.

I know nothing good or bad about this guy, but just based on measurables I don't get it. For DL he's short and small, where does he fit?

i would guess 3 technique in passing situations as a rookie, develop into a 3-4DE with good coaching. He's not a finished product but he can help right away in some packages.
