Tyron Smith to Jets 1yr/$20M

Recommended Posts

The Jets have managed to improve their starting OL a bit. Good for them. The to OTs they brought in are both 33, which is fairly worn down by NFL standards. Smith has a lot of past injury issues and they still play on that crap MetLife turf that steals ACLs and Achilles. That line MIGHT be intact at the start of the season...but just like last year they still have almost no depth as of yet.

Not really a worry IMO.

A 40yr old QB and 2 33yr old tackles. What could go wrong over 17-21 games??

Or, based on the fact that they play on a turf noted for playing a hand in non contact injury.

Fish and Jests spending big in FA. Obviously they think we are less and they are more at this point. If it weren't for JA17, they probably be right.

Yeah, because all the best teams spend big in free agency....

Oh wait, no. It's the worst teams and the desperate teams that spend big in free agency.

That’s a good pickup for them, they traded for a solid RT a few days ago as well.

your joking right? hes going to be 34 in December. he's no where near starting Calibur..  like he used to be and this dude plays as close to Hot/Cold as it gets.

this is like trying to use scotch tape as Duct Tape. Wont work.

A little bit of an overpay given the injury history, but a difference maker for sure.

He has not started a full season since 2015 and is 33 years old. He's going to be injured before Rodgers is..

You have higher expectations for them than I do.  They will only play 17 games, and their 40 year old QB will play less than half of them.

If the Bills didn't have Allen, they would have lots more cap space, wouldn't they?

True. And jockeying draft picks to

Find QB!

Truth.      Look at the Jests ... it's been about a quarter of a century since they hit on a decent franchise QB in the first round (or any round) with Chad Pennington taken #18 in 2000 (the same draft that produced Mike Vick and Tom Brady) who couldn't stay healthy ...   and about 60 years since they drafted a first round QB who was a bonafide franchise QB (Joe Namath) ... and their current QB is 40-years-old and thinking about running for VP!

Smith will end in the HoF. Only Trent Williams and Andrew Whitworth of that generation are in the same tier.

He has battled injuries the last 4 seasons and at 33 that is a risk but he played 13 games in 2023, giving up just 18 pressures and 1 sack. He was still pretty elite. If he can stay healthy this is a homerun for the Jets.

It's exactly why the Jets never have sustained success.  Always in win now mode.

They aren't looking for youth.   Both Douglas and Saleh know if they don't win they are goners.   So they take big risks on Hall of Fame level talents in the hope it buys them another.  Problem even if it does work it only buys them another year.

My thoughts too. I doubt he plays every game.

that'll work out to about $10 mil per game....lol

The contract is incentive heavy.   The gaurantee is only 6.5 milliion.  This is why the Jets were (supposedly) surprised that he signed.

Health will be the key.  Who knows, he could go down in game 1 like Rodgers, who had been an ironman (unlike Smith) before then, did.

The guy who was second team All Pro last season is nowhere near starting caliber?

Miller hasn’t played at an All Pro level since 2018.  Smith was literally 2nd team All Pro last year.  If he’s “nowhere near starting caliber”, then I don’t know who is considering the guy who was first team All Pro last year is going to be 36 and also missed a couple of games.

there is just some logic on topics you cant argue with because it makes that much less sense.

And saying that a second team All Pro player who just got $20 million a year is nowhere near starting caliber is one of them.  That’s your statement, not mine.  Not only is he not great, and not only his he not good, and not only is he not average, and not only is he not even below average, and not only is he not a solid backup…he’s nowhere near starting caliber.

What other all pros from last season are nowhere near starting caliber, in your view?

Even Chad  was a surprise. Namath was too.

Jets are just treading water as a team while getting headlines for drama
