If Khalil Mack is released, I would think Buffalo makes some sense due to his connection here and our openings at DE

Do you really think Von Miller and Beane worked out a deal so that Beane could get 8.5m in cap relief from Von, graciously turning it into incentives - just so Beane could turn around and use that money on someone who will totally replace him and guarantee he doesn't even have a chance to hit any of those incentives?

 

While I'm sure we'll either sign a vet for insurance in the event that Miller simply can't bounce back - it's not going to be someone like Khalil friggin' Mack.

Do you know what their contracts look like that would be picked up in a trade?  Might make for a better argument.

Yes, there's a rotation. But there's a big difference between being the starter and coming off the bench in terms of reps.

 

Khalil Mack would unequivocally move Von to rotational. AJ Epenesa got the highest number of snaps last season outside of Groot and Floyd, our starters. He saw the field 36% of the time.

 

This would be Von's ceiling with a Mack signing. No way he agreed to hand over that money and turn it all incentives on the pretense that he would use that money to completely replace him without even a chance to show last season was a mirage and make it so that he only has 36% or less of the snaps to earn the incentives.

 

AJ Epenesa - I can see that. A guy who can step in and take on more reps if Miller doesn't work out without completely closing the door on him Starting like a Mack would.

Hopefully Beane and McD arent betting on Von Miller being the primary contributor in the pass rush. The way he looked you have to have another plan and hope he can at least contribute something not plan on him being the guy.

Beane is gonna do what is best for the Bills, not what's best for Von.

I would trade Von Miller for Khalil Mack straight up because Von Miller is done as a NFL player. This way Von Miller can go back to Los Angeles with the Los Angeles Chargers this time. Von Miller 

on the Buffalo Bills is like Joe Namath on the Los Angeles Rams. It’s sad to watch Von Miller simply can’t play football anymore. The mind wants to but body says no. It’s sad Von Miller had nothing left once he left the Los Angeles Rams with a Super Bowl ring he should have retired a champion. As a Bills fan I hope I am wrong but it’s sad and painful to watch Von Miller play his knee is done just like Joe Namath in my opinion. Go Bills! Let’s Go Buffalo

He's going to insure he's not 100% putting all his eggs into the Von basket and has insurance there. But there's a big difference between covering our butts and completely closing the door on any possible chance Von could start before seeing him in Training Camp.

IMO it’s 50/50 that Beane told Von he wants to add a good piece to the DL and that’s part of the reason Von agreed to a reworked deal.  Although a DT like DJ Reader (as mentioned by another user) is more likely the target than DE. But, who knows?

 

Again, I’m living in a world where Monday at noon comes and we see one of the big shots tweet “Bills closing in on massive deal with Chiefs Superstar DT Chris Jones”

On top of that Beane’s commitment is to the overall betterment of the organization first, and player satisfaction second, it is always a business decision first and foremost. Does that potentially suck for Von? Maybe, maybe not…,

Don't the Bills play 2 DEs on the D at any given time? Why can't Von and Mack/Bosa be on the field at the same time?

In the rotation, sure. That can happen.

 

But the fact remains that for the cost of a Bosa or Mack as well as the options that will be available to them (neither is going to sign somewhere that they aren't Starting) - the Starters would def be Groot and Bosa/Mack. And the Starters get substantially more reps than the guys who cycle in.

Do you think Beane or Von counted on Joey Bosa or Khalil Mack possibly being available when that was done? This could be something that just came out in the last day or 2. They can absolutely make room for Bosa or Mack. In fact, if either one becomes available, they better. This sorry a*s thing they have called a pass rush with what they have has gone on long enough. We NEED that elite pass rusher. If either is available, get them. Do what it takes

That’s not true. He was far and away our best pass rusher before the knee injury. What was it, 8 sacks in 10 games? It wasn’t only the sacks either, he consistently got pressure. In the game against the Chiefs last year Eric Washington schemed the DL around what Von wanted to do rather than have a defined role or rush attack for each player; his defensive line mates responded off of him. That’s rare to give a player that much freedom, but he had earned it. He was a total dud in 2023, but 2022 he was still a menace. The Bills season hinges in many ways on him getting back to form, or at least close to it.

Bills and Bosa are a very real deal. Von re-negged his contract specifically for an opportunity like this. Mack and Bosa (either) are what this D needs along with a stud CB. Bosa is still young. Get er done beaner!
