Fake Slide should be 15 yard penalty

What even IS a "fake slide"? A running QB isn't allowed to hesitate or move laterally, they just need to run straight forward at full speed or be flagged?

The only way you could have a “fake slide” is where the QB goes down on a knee just above the field and then gets up and continues to run. Problem is at that point the play would be called dead.

lol on the TD run?   zero way to know what he was or wasnt thinking there.   looks like a juke or fake,  or maybe he thought about sliding then said f it.   no way that ever gets called even if fake sliding was indeed a penalty.   whoever this poster is,  is super salty.

didnt Pickett actually fake slide in college?  like you could actually see his thought process with the fake.  it was blatant.

if the original poster isnt a troll,  well,  hes got issues.

the Pickett play in college is a great example of what shouldn’t be allowed. It’s a way different motion than this play though.

And how, exactly, does the OP know it wasn’t a juke?

Pre existing bias, perhaps? 🤔

He knows because he saw his own QB do an actual fake slide in the season opener vs. the Lions.

If the nearest defender was 7 yards away, why would the defender expect him to slide?

No defenders quit on the play…people are really more mad at the Steelers defense than Josh and I guess don’t realize it.  Like how do you get frozen by that juke lol it’s kind of embarrassing.  None of them gave up but a couple froze for a split second to adjust their angles

It was awesome from Josh and we ain’t apologizing. But there would be a full on melt down if Mahomes did this to us haha!

it is BS because the nfl has defenders afraid to breathe on qbs now. So we’re not giving the points back but I bet this does get addressed in the offseason.

Im seeing this 'fake slide' thing coming from spiteful Miami and Kansas City, but it didnt even cross my mind.

Watching the replay it doesnt look like the beginning of a slide at all.  It looks like a sudden change in direction on a somewhat slippery field to hit a hole.

Slowed down to wait for his block i thought.   The only guy who could've tackled him just... i dunno punched at the ball and just bounced right off him like tecmo bowl.

Tackle him?  Mahomes almost always goes out of bounds.  He does try and initiate contact out of bounds and stretch the yards he gets to try and draw flags.

Josh has fake-slid at times.  He's talked about it on podcasts.  Josh said post-game that "they" were yelling "Slide!" at him (I assume teammates).

But that looked more like a juke to me, and Josh is also on film having a full complement of running back-like moves in the open field.   I think he learnt from Shady his rookie year because he seemed to have more and more of them as his rookie season went on.

@Zerovoltz , a KC fan, has been accused of being a troll and I've sometimes defended him.  But he's either trolling here, or not thinking through the consequences, because his own precious QB is a regular and repeat offender at faking he'll go OOB and then tiptoeing down the sidelines 15 yards after he gets the defender to pull up for fear of a late hit PF.  I'd be  totally OK with taking an occasional 15 yd penalty ....as long as they penalize Mahomes for it.  Every.  Time.

There was a pretty egregious penalty in the KC-GB game on KC's final drive against Mr. Simone Biles himself, GB S Jonathan Owens.  GB leading by 8 points.  2nd and 10, Mahomes runs.  I know he's going for the marker, everyone else on the field knows he's going for the marker, Jonathan Owens knows he's going for the marker and takes the perfect angle to hit him and try to knock him back and stop him short to create a 3rd down.  The announcers were aghast when a 15 yd UR was called.  I was aghast.

Never more happy than to see that drive stall out and GB get the Dub.

Haha it’s weird if it’s rigged for Josh that we got screwed late with no calls numerous times this year.  People only talk about the no call that won us the giants game but we got hosed on that jets punt return, hosed on that pats ineligible man downfield flag pickup, hosed against the eagles the entire game, and probably a few others I don’t remember

Open field running and running over people is just not Mahomes bag, whereas Josh gets off on it.

Mahomes thing is the fake step on the sideline then dancing down it.

We got hosed a few times in the Steelers game.  Pretty clear false start on the Steelers 1st TD.  Pretty clear DH on Diggs multiple times through the game.

It would make me happy if we could get the offensive Offside and the false starts on Jawaan Taylor vs KC.  He does it like every freakin' play and they call it maybe once a game.

I don’t like that dancing on the sideline move either. I think you should be allowed to get destroyed if you do that.

Hopefully there’s a “from behind” view of that play.

If there is it's going to be hard to make anything out through Josh's afterburners.

A pump fake, juke, fake pitch...etc are all plays that by rule DO NOT require the defender to give up on the play.  A slide is specificially intended to protect the QB because by rule, once he slides he has given up, and by rule the defender must also.  It's not the same thing.

The defender was quoted after the game saying he wasn't sure if Josh was about to slide or not....causing him to pause...and not that Josh would know or care, but said player had already been fined and suspended for a late hits already this year.  The defender to Josh's front right also pretty much gives up on the play (which is his fault, didn't play to whistle) so probably also thought Josh was about to slide.  Doesn't look like a guy fighting to stay in the play and make a tackle at all.

If the defenders made that mistake then that's all on them it was a monumentally stupid decision. It's the Playoffs, and it's Josh ***** Allen, did they watch tape on him all week or not? You watch tape on him running in the open field and this is exactly how he creates more yards by making defenders take bad angles. It's not like they were right on top of him he had a ton of space still, all of them should have been thinking they needed to close and get hands on him even if he was sliding as they got close. Then what happens Allen took a different angle, the defender that tried to adjust gets ran the ***** over, and the others quickly realize "Oh ***** he's past our angle and we can't catch up!"

It's just like a player drawing a foul in basketball.  You can do it too, so i don't have much of an issue with it.  Just don't push him down, if anything hold him up on his feet and you won't get a call.

Allen with the blatant fake slide on the long run, then later draws a 15 yard penalty on a late hit on slide where the defender didn't hit his head.....but can you blame him for going for the tackle based on the fake earlier?

The slide is a play intended to protect the QB, not to do what Allen did.  That was garbage.

You know, what is it with Chiefs and the ref blaming this season?

Let's talk garbage. You directly benefited from that terrible fourth quarter call in the Super Bowl... the refs called that game for 3 quarters one way and in the 4th quarter a different way and handed you a championship.

I definitely agree with the OP that fake slides should be a penalty. I don't really why this is a topic right now though. I don't remember seeing a fake slide since Pickett did it in college.

@ZerovoltzIf Josh was a fake slide, then this was one too...

Yes it's on the exact same level.   He paused like he *might* do if he was going to either slide down or head out of bounds.  Or like he might do if he was pondering where to run.    And he has done that frequently throughout his career.   At this point as fans we just assume he will do that and blame the defense if they allow him to get those extra yards.    I guess @Zerovoltz just thinks it's "unfair" because Allen typically trucks or leaps over defenders when he gets downfield.........but that doesn't make it "unfair" when Allen does it.

This is the textbook example of a fake slide........as executed by Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett:

The Steelers should be embarrassed by this.  The key blocks that sprung that run downfield were thrown by Deonte Harty and Andy Isabella.

#23 went down like a ton of bricks and even Patrick Peterson wanted no part of Josh.  Defenders are making business decisions when they see that freight train coming at them, and that's fine.  What's not fine is trying to paper it over by claiming it was a "fake slide."  It makes them sound like a drunk standing by himself in a bar who says "if there wasn't all these guys holding me back, I'd kick your ass."

the reason this worked is bc Steelers #20 kept face guarding the receiver even tho allen was about 20 yards past the LOS.  Then -#20 spun around so he could be easily blocked haha.

watch that play again, wtf is Steelers #20 doing!?!? You’d think he was on offense blocking!

On the Josh run AND the Shakir touchdown, there were a lot of Steelers pumping their arms and making it look like they were trying hard for the tape, but not really trying at all and just running along. They were done.

he was several yards away from any defender engaging a tackle- it’s not like they pulled up last second. Even if they read it as a slide they could continue to close space before making a decision

As clear as can be he's not sliding he's juking some defenders out of theirs shoes, I don't think it can get any clearer than from this angle.

Idk, the way he leaned back a little, kinda looked like the beginning of a slide, intentionally or not.

Regardless it is absolutely true that defenders are scared to hit or tackle anyone.  If they hit someone on the sideline it’s a penalty, even if they are in bounds.  Later in this game, Allen got a call for being hit on his slide.  He slide late and the defender pulled off as best he could in that situation, and it’s still a penalty.

Basically the defender is left to assume there’s a slide coming or assume the qb will just run out of bounds. If they react with a tackle, it’s called a penalty almost every time.   Mahomes does the fake “I’m headed out of bounds” all the time and draws flags when he is still in bounds all the time.

This Sunday is going to be interesting, which team/qb will the script have winning? The refs don’t call holding on the Chefs, pass interference is in the eye of the beholder and which all star qb gets the most phantom calls or non-calls for that matter? The game is starting to resemble the NBA.

Steelers players were looking for any excuse to give up on the play and did just that, and then folks are upset with Josh for the Steelers' weak performance.

Any defender who wants to win would have closed that distance to make sure he slid and still had plenty of time and space to pull up.

Steelers just gave up.
