LA market not in top 10 for SB TV ratings

It's an interesting result. Seat of the pants analysis: a lot of this has to do with the percentage of foreign-born (excluding Canadian) residents. American football, is, well (North) American.Ā Ā Los Angeles simply doesn't have the demographics to drive Top 10 football viewership. Many of the rust belt cities do.

Not surprised.

Ā

The NFL is gonna make their TV money either way, so they don't care.

I totally agree with this but admittedly just bitter that there is one fan base and city that gets to end the season happy, and itā€™s one that is bandwagon and/or doesnā€™t care.Ā

I'm home in CA this week. It was in the mid 80s on Sunday afternoon and sunny. Most people in this area could care less about the Lambs. Of course there are many who do care and the population of SO CAL is very high, but based on the ratings, doesn't seem like the percentage that care are high.

Iā€™m guess not sure why it matters what the weather is like during the game. We have 80 degrees and sunny during plenty of football games in the fall and it doesnā€™t impact whether I watch the games.Ā

I was happy for some of the players on the Rams.Ā  But for that fanbase, it's just a minor distraction from drama w/ the Lakers.

Ā

I think this was LA's last championship for some time. The Lakers have done basically what the Rams did. Leveraged their future picks for this year. And in the Lakers case it was a colossal fail. I think the Dodgers have peaked too.

TV Ratings is a really poor term. For example, I would not be counted in TV ratings, but I watched the Superbowl.Ā

Ā

Then you have that ratings are a percentage, not a straight up number. So 10% of LA watching might be more people than 40% of Cincinnati. This is also based onĀ  roughly 21,000 households that are monitored out of something like 127 million people who have TVs in their home.

Ā

Also, when you dig into how Nielsen accounts for viewership and then viewership outside of the home (February in Cincinnati and LA are two very different things), these ratings are basically massive guesses.Ā

As a whole, sure. But there are a ton of fans in that area, nonetheless. They watched their team move to St. Louis and win a SB there. At least they were able to win now in their original city.

I hope that is the case. They moved to St. Louis so long ago Iā€™m not sure how many folks hung on that long.Ā

We were a Nielsen family twice.Ā  The first time we had to report our viewing online.Ā  The second time (after a few years), we had to wear this beeper-looking thing on our persons and that would tell Nielsen what we were watching.

Game started while it was still light on the West Coast. Too many people still out at the Boardwalk at Venice, ogling the sights. šŸ˜

Were the cheques signed by Bill Belichick?

Makes sense if the OC in your name refers to Orange County... OC doesn't identify with the LA teams- more the Jets fans of the sporting world.Ā

Yolo? You are aware of the sheer size of the LA Marketā€¦right? The metro area is bigger than most states!Ā

Breaking news? Obviously there are a ton of people there and much harder to achieve a 40-50 rating like you would find in Cincinnati but most would find a 36.7 rating and 77 share a bit disappointing of a number when they are the host city AND their team is playing in the game.Ā

Maybeā€¦but you threw in the idea of not deserving two teams. Even with those low ratings there are probably TEN TIMES as many eyeballs on screens as there are in all of WNY.Ā

Makes sense.Ā  LA is loaded w/ AVID Chargers fans & were upset they didn't make it so they boycotted the game. ;)

whats nuts is that I saw a Rams game earlier this year and fans were wearing other random NFL jerseys (not of the rams or their opponent). Ā It reminded me of when the Bills played in Toronto.Ā

The LA area, and California as a whole is Baseball and Basketball region, alway has been, Iā€™ve been in Cali for over three months this winter, Havenā€™t seen a single new LA team football hat or jersey, Just leftover San Diego & Oakland stuff, and not much of that either.Ā

People don't sit indoors and watch TV in LA.Ā  They attend games, particularly the college games...USC and UCLA especially...in person.Ā Ā

This is chargers games too. But the nfl knew that, they donā€™t care. Itā€™s total eyeballs they care about.Ā

There are simply more entertainment options for Los Angeles than most other markets. Toss in the fact that a lot of people went out to watch the game (it started at 3:30 in LA) and I wouldn't be shocked if that skews the ratings.Ā

Ā

You have 364 other days for those entertainment options. For them to host the Super Bowl with the home team playing in it they should have had better numbers. Even with all the people going out to watch the game.Ā

Again, itā€™s Super Bowl Sunday. In their city. With their team playing. If there are other ā€œentertainment optionsā€ during that 3 hour window, they do not care about football. Which is totally fine but makes me feel bad for the other 29 cities. Happy for their fans that DO care, obviously.Ā

LA fans 5 minutes after the game ended: cool! toss it on the pile of titles! What else is on?

Ā

Meanwhile, here in WNY we would remember it for the rest of our lives. You'd see people 20 years from now wearing the Bills SB champion shirts from this SB.

Ā

I know I would be crying like a blubbering seal with a mixture of sheer joy, disbelief, and more sheer joy. I'll bet Rams fans high fived each other and went to the beach or something.Ā

If/when the Bills win the Super Bowl they would have to close every business for that Monday in WNY. People would be partying all night long. Getting up for work the next day would be almost impossible.

That's unpossible!! Ā Keith Jackson always made it sound like the Coliseum was bursting at the seams for every USC game! šŸ˜

Back then it probably was. Recently the coliseum has been empty and the team has been irrelevant. I would guess Lincoln Reilly could turn that around but we will see.Ā

May as well start calling them the Los Angeles Kroenkes.Ā  Once Stan is done demolishing Arsenal he can really turn the screws on the Rams.
