Losing enthusiasm for football

Recommended Posts

Yeah, call it a potential overreaction to today, but even before the game started, watching felt like a chore, not a boon.

Football meant everything to me.  It was quality time with my dad, who taught me all about it.  One of my best memories of my dad was being together at the stadium for The Comeback.  It was in my blood.

But now it seems the wins feel good, but the losses feel so much worse.  I'm watching the games on my own now, my kids aren't into football.

My stress levels are through the roof on close games.  Today was miserable.  A loss, bad coaching, bad playing, abyssmal officiating (for the first time I am seriously wondering if the NFL is fixed/scripted).  And it's not over.  This loss is going to stay with me and haunt me.

I'm wondering if it's worth it anymore.  If the good feelings are worth the bad feelings and time commited.  Yes, a Super Bowl win would be euphoric.  But the odds are against that.  Would anything else, even a season ending in a Super Bowl loss, be worth the time and torment invested?  It's like buying an expensive emotional lottery ticket.

I'm...kinda starting to think not, that this just isn't worth it.  Anyone else feel the same, or at least understand?

I feel the same, in a way. I'll watch every Sunday...I just don't care when they lose anymore. When they were stopped at the end of the Titans game I remembering thinking 'oh well'. I'm already over today's game.

May or may not watch some Sunday night football, will probably watch a movie or play some video games.

It's when you don't give a ***** about the score either way that it's time to stop watching

For me it’s all about being real. If it ever comes to light that the NFL is fixed in any way, it’s over for me. Sometimes I wonder if it is with the fantom calls or no calls that happen. Everything is just to subjective in the game anymore. If I wanted fake entertainment, I’d watch Jerry Springer and wrestling.

Buck up, King. We have at least 9 more games to go. It's the journey to the super bowl that is fun.

Probably would have seen this comment after the Hail Murray last year, too.  We're in the exact same position this year.

I know what you're saying, but it ALWAYS feels that way when you lose.  They win next week, even against the Jets, and we'll feel fine again.

Didnt have that feeling today, the way the games are being called is getting really frustrating. Its not about the W/L with the refs, I just would like to watch a football game with some flow. Seems like the last two weeks have been really bad with it.

However, I know the feeling you are feeling. A gut punch of a loss, when you really care about something, is tough. Then to add to the frustration of not being able to do anything about it. It really makes you question what you are doing as a person.

So uncalled for to the OP.

He wasn't being obnoxious or anything.

Not sure if you're trying to be funny, but just disrespectful and uncalled for.

Bills lose a game they weren't expected to, and OP decides it's time for this woe is me post? Yeah... Shut... the f*** up.

I used to plan my whole weekend around college and NFL football. Now that my kids are getting older, most of their sports activities are on the weekend. I didn't get a chance to watch a second of the game and don't really care. Always hope the Bills do well, but in the grand scheme of things there are more important things in life.

Why be a douche?

We are 5-3 with 9 games remaining in a pretty weak conference... this place is almost unbearable after a loss, and this is a pathetic LAMP post. Bills still win the east and host at least one playoff game.

As I said, wasn't just this game.  Felt the same before this one started.  This isn't just a reaction to one game.  The lows feel just as low to me, the highs not as high.  I know what the '90s felt like.  I know what the drought felt like.

Today was not the start of feeling it.  It simply brought the question up in my head again.

It has caused me stress my entire life.

But I still tune in every Sunday.

I think you have to be emotionally invested to get the enjoyment when they win and of course that comes with a risk of disappointment...

But Im not going to let it stress me out..  I got other things doing that...

To the OP:

This was a brutal game to watch today and super tough loss.

But this is the best era in Bills football RIGHT NOW since the Super Bowl days.

Hang in there!  Thing will get better.

Don't be worried if you don't feel the same as you used to as a kid.  I don't either.  That's called maturity.

To be clear, since tone is not clear on the internet, my OP, and my responses, are not said in anger.  This is not "!@#$ these !#$%@ pieces of !@#$%!!!  Why the !@#$ do I even watch?!?".  No, this is quiet reflection, and an honest question for something I've felt all season actually, just brought into focus again today.

LOL alright bud. It's a football game, just relax a bit maybe?

No need to swear at people on a football message board.

I didn't swear. I merely censored the word funk. Like I said before - the bills are 5-3 with 9 games remaining and people are acting like we just got eliminated from playoff contention. I can't stand this reactionry BS, especially with this regime in place.

Not reactionary.  Reread my posts please.

But you dont expect to win every game right?

Its disappointing .. sure... but are you really going to be still disappointed about this game come next Sunday?

Guys, it's sports entertainment.

Relax. It's still real to me dammit!

Most people watch the games because they believe they are real battle of the will games and the best talent wins. Nobody wants scripted games or bettor influenced outcomes. The first whistleblower or scandal that even hints that, and it’s OVER for me.
