Ethan in Cleveland
He's the only pass rusher on the team. They signed him to a reasonable extension and have plenty of cap room. Murphy is the most overpaid pass rusher in the league when you compare contract to production. Blame Beane for not finding a complimentary pass rusher to Hughes.

Mark80
Jerry Hughes is not a "very good" player. He's had one season of 10 sacks. A DE getting about 5 sacks per year is not a "very good" player. At least he isn't getting stupid penalties any more. I agree with OP. His contract is insane and he is invisible on the field. His only really successful years were when he also had Mario, Kyle, and Marcel (who was good at the time) taking much of the blocking. He was 4th best of those guys during those years. Dablitzkrieg
If the production does not improve, he will most likely be asked to restructure or released. We know how this goes. Socal-805
I have watched, hear, and read multiple times how the Bills defense gets very little pressure and almost no sacks from either D end position: Hughes and Edwards COMBINED have like 3 sacks, and the Bills have been playing a powder puff schedule. They have also been giving up large number in the rush defense area.
Da webster guy
He got paid in the offseason, and last year he was impactful. The good news is that he matured and stopped getting a personal foul every game. The bad news is he's lost a half step, but every team has players that are declining and overpaid for their contributions. He's a good locker room guy, works hard and still chases plays down from the backside.

That contract was signed a couple years ago. It is not unusual for players at the end of their contracts and careers to not produce at the level they are getting paid. Its part of the bargain. Now, if youre asking why he isn't cut, that would depend on the cap hit and who we have to replace him. Both of those lend themselves to keeping him. Yes, a DE's job is to create pressure and get sacks but if he is getting asked to fill a gap or seal an edge his job isn't to go full tilt towards the QB. In obvious pass plays, yes he is probably being told to do that, but unless you are right there in the coaches and player meetings none of us know for certain what his job is each play.
