In all honesty.  I calculate 20-25% in even before going out.  If I can't afford it, I don't stuff my fat Bougie face and consume.  Just don't go out.  LoL...

LoL...

You keep telling yourself that, Lenin.

An offshoot of the tipping craze that I just hate is the grocery, pet store etc. asking if you want to donate to some charity when you go to pay.  My kids looked at me funny at first for saying "no" but 1.  I don't know how much of my dollars are actually ending up at that charity and 2. I choose when and where I donate, not at some big business' request.

The random place that asks you if you want to round up to the next dollar for a charity, those ones do it right.  Sure it's a small donation each time, but I bet they consistently get that donation from most customers.

you read that wrong

Tip Jars are voluntary.   If I frequent the place a lot I will tip.

Automatically adding 15% onto your bill - that is not voluntary.

"Recommending" 20% is just as outrageous.

Bring my food, be polite, be attentive but not too attentive.  Act as if you care and I'll give them a nice tip.

Bring my food and ignore me for 30 minutes .... is not tip worthy.

basically, i don't want to be bothered after my meal is served. yet if i need something i fully expect y waiter to be available. if this is the case then a bigger tip is coming their way.

...love the way restaurants show suggested percentages of tip and calculate it on total bill INCLUDING sales tax....if I take my gang out, the bill is 300 bucks plus 24.00 in sales tax....why should tip be calculated on $324 versus $300?....I usually leave 20% for good service ($60.00) so why should I pay an extra $4.80 tip on the sales tax ($64.80) ?......

My big thing is beverages.  A good server will keep an eye on everyone's drinks.  If I finish my drink and I need to wait for the server to come ask if I want another ... that's a ding.

PAY these people well enough and F the tips.  Better pay = better working attitude = better service

It would be split amongst servers and other staff.

And I can say, unequivocally, that you and The Climate Changer otherwise known as @ExiledInIllinois, would ***** your collective pants if restaurant food prices rose 15-20% across the board. In other words, you’re both full of it.

There's no tipping down here in New Zealand, thank God.

It's one of the irritating things to deal with when visiting the States.

this was a point my friend from England made too, but it seemed to me like the tip may have been 'built in' by the inflated prices, ie. pints of beer were commonly £5 which came to over $8 at the time of my visit to the UK

In one of the restaurants I worked at, a guy would come in and at the beginning of his meal set down a bunch of dollars and tell them this was the servers tip. If he had to wait to have his drink refilled or there were any problems with his meal he would remove money from the pile

This pretty simple a buck for each take out item and 20% at least for a meal you're served.

Unless the service is awful, I don't understand people's issue with tipping.

I'm served at a restaurant.  Handing me a bag full of food isn't what I consider as "Service."

What's the difference between someone assembling a bunch of burgers, etc. and putting them in a bag to hand to you .... and someone putting together any other meal, then putting it in a bag to hand to you?  Why do you draw a line between "fast food" and a "restaurant?"

I don't mind tipping $1-$2 a drink. What I don't like is when I go to a place, start a tab, have several beers, and only get charged for half of them. I mean if someone is having 3 or more drinks they are probably entitled to one on the house. But it's tough to run a business when the profits are given away in the hopes of a big tip. Which admittedly I give, often upwards of 100% when this happens, which probably makes me part of the problem.

And while we're ranting, when did "no problem" replace "you're welcome" as the proper response to a thank you? Nothing irks me more than thanking the wait staff and being told it was not a problem. I wasn't expecting it to be a problem, it's their effing job! Okay, there's probably a lot that irks me more that that, but I find it really annoying. Does anyone else?

You're the first person I've ever heard of complaining about getting hooked up.

You'll never be happy.

I go to Publix at least 5 times a week, and they are a bit out of control with this. I give a dollar each time, but usually don’t even know what it’s going toward. I’m hoping the entry fee to Heaven isn’t any more than one dollar.

Our oldest son was a wild card, but with a good heart. I found a can of orange spray paint in his car one time. Naturally, you need to ask “what was the paint for?” He stammered for a bit, but then admitted he went with a buddy from the football team to go cow tipping one night. The poor cows were so innocent and unaware, and they didn’t have it in their hearts to rock them to the ground, so they......”decorated them” instead.

Restaurant tipping is straight forward. I'm tipping on the service, not the meal. 20% is the standard (including drinks). Could go higher or lower but usually not by much either way. If I'm with a big group I'll kick in extra after the anal retentive calculator folks figure out "what's right".

Hotel tipping is more interesting. They seem to always have their hand out for services I have little use for. Bell boy? You better get running now, I can handle my own bags. Does anyone tip the maids for daily service? I don't. But I'll leave a buck or two for clearing our plates while we are in between rounds of gluttony at the breakfast buffet.

You are correct.  Worked my thru college as a waiter and the tip was always pre-tax.  Post tax is one of my pet peeves.

I don’t need a bellhop, and I may just offend a few who try to get a few bucks from us by being pushy. It’s not the money as much as assuming I can’t do it myself. I got this stuff all the way from my closet to your front door. I can handle to the elevator and up to the room. That can be annoying.

I don’t tip maids, but a cruise is different.

I leave 10 bucks a day for maids.  It's back breaking work. I value their work.  I am not a pig in the room... It doesn't get left a mess.

@LeviF91 nailed in his post above.

I don't tip for my service.  I tip to gracious and thankful that someone is helping.  It's about them, not me.

I know I am an oddball.  So be it.

I don't even understand why it's necessary the begging culture... People simply aren't paid enough or we aren't taxes for our services enough if public entities have to beg for extra money, widows and orphans, etc... etc...

Charity sometimes creates more problems, inequity:

This article can be applied to the culture of tipping, begging for extra.  The fact is, these people are underpaid for their services.

My wife would be pissed if she saw how neat I generally keep my hotel room (unless she's with me of course).

$10/day is insane though -- unless you're Richie Rich like you.  I probably average $2/day, which is about $10/hr.

p.s.  Where are you getting this 'cops and firefighters panhandling' nonsense?   Every panhandler I've ever seen is either a) a certified bum who hasn't held a real job in years or b) a professional begger (lots and lots of those).

We don’t tip at hotels, and that seems crazy! My wife is in a hotel more than home, and we are rarely here together. It’s almost all business travel, and sometimes I join her to see the city she is visiting. Tips at a hotel is odd behavior in our view.

Again, on a cruise there is a different set of expectations. I’m fine with that.

well, I think most restaurant meals I order takeout involve lots more than putting something in a bag. Pizza not included.

I was a server at a popular WNY restaurant years ago. The menu was steak, lobster and French centered. The prices were high (even by today's standards) but money never appeared to be the object. It was more or less a social club for some. If I gave them what they wanted, I was tipped handsomely. I worked some brutal hours...but made a killing.

They stand @ intersection with a boot and beg for money.  Because their departments aren't getting enough.  The police should write them a ticket for standing in traffic.

Professional beggars.  Same with the professional charities that beg on the phone for the widows and orphans... We must not be paying them well enough?

You would think... There would be a way to block them with computers. Lot of spoofing going on.  Got into an argument with someone who called my cell.  They said I called, I said no, they said my # on their caller Id.  LoL... How the heck are they spoofing #s.

At least a cell, you can block the #.

I will tip if the food is waiting for me when I arrive.  Only a few dollars, and only if it's a real restaurant; mostly because they have to preserve the integrity of the food, instead of just sticking it into a styrofoam box.

I used to tip 20% at vietnamese cafe I frequented about once a month.

I Built a relationship with a particular waitress who practically shoved all the other servers aside to get to me first. I always ordered the same thing so all I had to do was walk in, answer yes to her question of "same order", shop at the asian market next door, then drop off a $20 ($15 order) at the counter, as I was handed my food,  on my way back to my car.

I never realized how much I relied on this simple routine, until my waitress wasn't at work. Consequently, I had to wait in line to put my order in when I arrived, then forced to wait 10mins after my shopping trip as they had not gotten to my order yet. There was no tip on that one.

Isn't that a 33% tip?

The NYC PBA, DEA, and all of the other unions do NOT solicit. They never have and the PBA in particular has millions of dollars in the treasury.

When generous citizens call and ask to donate money, the Widows and Orphans Fund will accept it but that is it. These "charities" who call and solicit are scamming you.

PS: Decades ago, Yoko Ono, during a fiscal crisis, donated money to NYC (not the police unions) to purchase bulletproof vests for police officers.
