RyanC883
I can't imagine that either team would allow their QB to do this. It's a terrible idea due to injury risk. Although there is some sort of mutual respect brewing between JA and Mahomes that is fun to watch. Edited April 5, 2019 by RyanC883

When was the last time a QB was taken out of a game by straining his arm by throwing? Check that. Has it EVER happened? It must be a regular occurrence the way some people here are talking. I genuinely cannot see any grounds for concern if common sense is applied. I get that people are protective of their QB but this is insane! Here’s a radical idea. How about holding this in the off-season? Please someone explain the insane risk because this line absolutely boggles my mind.

I did not say it was a "terrible risk," but a "terrible idea" because of the risk. There is zero reward, and there is risk. 2. This event is totally different than a QB throwing during a game. The idea of "who can throw it further," is much more akin to a pitcher in baseball straining his arm to the max to throw a fastball, etc. During a game, a QB is throwing a variety of throws at various speeds, likely never "red-lining" their arm. This contest would involve throwing it as far as possible, ask., pushing your arm to its limit. That's dangerous.

This would be fun and generate interest in both Josh and the Bills. I know right? I was fear mongering too, but realistically Allen has 300 LB defensive tackles who can run sub-5 40's wanting to crush him each play, so wrapping him in bubble wrap doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Plus the kid thinks he can run through them, or leap over them. Must be a knee-jerk negative outlook reaction to years of seeing defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Hard to be a Bills fan and not have "How could this go horribly wrong?" tattooed on your brain.

You save maxing out for extreme situations, not for fan entertainment, or even charity. I’ll give to charity to avoid the (minimal) risk. I know people might ridicule this, possibly including the two QB’s involved! I just see maxing out as taking a risk. I heard guys from the combine say they could have done better at the 40, but it wasn’t worth the risk of injury. Obviously, part of that is self serving, but part of it is true. Warcodered
It's not like they don't throw as hard as they can in games or probably even in practice. They might not be trying to throw as far as they can but on some of those lasers they've fired they're probably in the ballpark for as hard as they can throw it just doesn't have a long ball trajectory.

One of my sons got hurt trying to max out on a clean and jerk before the championships, and it cost him dearly. Crushed it on the bench, inability to practice clean and jerk (which is mostly technique) set him WAY back. Unnecessary max out hurt him. This could be a “me thing”. I admit it.

If Allen is dumb enough to hurt himself in a meaningless charity competition, he was never going to make it in the NFL anyway. Look at RG3. He was having a phenomenal rookie season, got hurt, then returned too early in a playoff game and ruined his career. Garoppolo ruined his season (career remains to be seen) by pushing for an extra yard on a scramble and shredded his knee. Players that do not understand where that line is (between maxing out and being competitive) get seriously injured and do not last in the NFL. Awe shucks with the media. This is my field between the lines. That attitude could conceivably differentiate him from other QB's with similar issues. Mahommes would lose Yep. And in the measured velocity tests, Allen threw 62mph to both the left and right, a combine record. Mahomes was a full 7mph slower at 55mph in both directions at his combine. And I don’t recall exactly who the sports science guy is that conducts his tests, but Allen set a record for fastest recorded arm speed as well. Something like 74mph. None of that means Allen would automatically win a longest throw contest, but the physics involved show he has a distinct advantage.
