Having grown up in a restaurant, Kitchen Confidential is one of the most influential books I have ever read in my life. Such a wise man. This sucks. Great book. Man drugs are bad. Even if you kick the habit it seems the ghost follows you forever. I really enjoyed him in his shows. He was a natural on TV because his personality, his enthusiasm was authentic. I liked him on everything he was on. He and the Frenchman Ludo were great foes on "The Taste" But it's so sad I didn't know he still had these demons. Another influential book, to myself anyway, is Ramsay's "Roasting In Hells Kitchen". I never realized his childhood was so bad

I was enamored from that moment on. Read Kitchen Confidential, and Medium Raw, and retroactively watched A Cook's Tour and kept up with him through the years. He certainly lived his life to the fullest and this is NOT the way I thought he would go out. Fittingly and most sadly, he was found by his best friend Eric Ripart who is an amazing chef and a great counterpart to Tony. RIP, Anthony. I will miss your work terribly. Same here. From the moment I first started watching him, I was mesmerized storytelling and way he carried himself. I read his first book, saw him on the lecture circuit when he came to our city. He was cool personified. Once again, proves we really don't know the demons people face on a daily basis. Mental Health issues don't discriminate. Fadingpain
Saw the headline, was shocked, and immediately thought "I bet it was suicide." And so it was. What a shame. I bumped into him at a Borders book store in the DC area years ago. He had a book out and was the guest speaker that night. I met him in line for the coffee bar. Cool guy, stylishly dressed... He strikes me as the kind of guy to have some demons and I'm not surprised by the suicide, though I wouldn't have predicted it either. The world's lost a good chef. He at times openly discussed having those demons hes is a recovering addict that drank like a fish I’m surprised of the timing - but not shocked at all that he might end up here. Anyone that’s familiar with mental health and actually paid attention to him and not just watched with jealousy of his job likely picked up on him wrestling with stuff. He did a pretty good job of addressing those demons it seems but when that’s a daily choice to be alive- all it takes is one day of making the wrong choice and you end up here. Most of us rarely think twice of that choice, but some have to really make it conciously thousands of times without getting it wrong one time. I’m surprised on set, with his best friend is where he slipped... though he openly admitted that despite the life looking charmed, it was also very hard. Punching Bag
I was introduced to him on CNN at work. CNN was only station allowed on at work (although person in charge seemed to find it okay to turn it to soccer games) despite government paying for DirectTV (Imaging paying DirectTV and only watching one station). His show and "This is Life with Lisa Ling" were only things I wanted to watch that were on but the rest were just noise I was trying to ignore. He had a great story telling style; it reminded me of some of the story tellers at Renaissance faires I go to. Government got tired of complaints about CNN post election and they changed the 'allowed station' to local news station which is at least 50% infomercials. Not seen a show since. A pity about this. Reminds me of Robin Williams who all to live for but could not deal with issues anymore.

Pete
I have always been a big fan and even have his Le Halles cookbook(I love Fbombs in cookbooks!). I dug A Cooks Tour, and Kitchen Confidential is mandatory reading for any chef. This is so tragic. I was shocked to saw that he had a show on CNN and wondered if felt like a total sellout-like some of his targets. Bourdain lived every chefs dream life- travel the world, sample all the world flavors, party with locals, have chef buddies show you their town, getting hooked up by chefs world wide constantly....all that, Tony had an 11 year old daughter, and it still didn't help his depression. I wish peace to Tony and his family

Imagine you are living your absolute dream and you are still struggling with those thoughts, for instance. As an an outsider I can’t say much about what he was dealing with as an individual but will say life’s often harder than it looks.

He's doing an early morning tour of the modern Les Halles and for breakfast they have a rare piece of beef on baguette with red wine, and he says something like, "This is breakfast. !@#$ Cheerios man!" I cooked for 6-7 years in my youth and having read read Kitchen Confidential wished I had written it. He was an astute observer of the places and cultures he visited, and I appreciated his commentary. I've met his Russian buddy Zamir a couple times and follow him on FB. He's crushed. It makes no sense....RIP Tony.

My wife who is usually a very good judge of this stuff says she saw signs of him being “disconnected” or “dark” in the episodes aired so far this season. I remain stunned that he went out in the way that he did. At the same time, it’s paradoxically not unexpected. The guy had demons and I think he sought to overcome them through work.
