Jordan Matthews not coming back

Not exactly a surprise.

....O'Reilly time (finally)?......

Jordan Matthews (injured reserve) underwent left knee and right ankle surgery Thursday.

In a social media post, Matthews said both injuries had "plagued" him over the past two years. He's expecting a full recovery, but did not provide a timeline. Finishing his age-25 season on I.R., Matthews is headed to free agency. Thu, Dec 14, 2017 02:38:00 PM

Jordan Meh-tthews was expendable in Philadelphia as a slot receiver with Nelson Agholor emerging.  He's just not explosive enough to be an outside receiver and Zay Jones is best suited to play slot which makes Jordan redundant.  Nice guy whom I wish nothing but the best for as he moves on.

Soon-to-be-free agent WR Jordan Matthews said Tuesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio he expects the Bills to monitor the free-agent market before deciding whether to re-sign him. "Moving forward, obviously [last season] didn't work out exactly how we wanted it to," Matthews said. "I think, honestly, where I was going into free agency -- especially because I had to go into [knee and ankle] surgery [in December] -- everybody [in Buffalo] more so with me was just kind of like, 'Let's just see what happens.' They, just like everyone else around the league, wants to see the nature of my injury and how I come back and how I rehab. And I think they also want to see what happens on the open market, because there's a bunch of other receivers that coming out right now that are free agents that they might see fitting into their system too. So I'm kind of in that kind of space right now."

Come on man! You are not a #1 WR!

Well that could be why he won't be back, if he views himself as a #1 WR (and is looking to get paid that way).

I can guarantee that the Bills don't value him as a #1.

I wonder if they ever even made him an offer though. It didn't really seem like the Bills ever had much interest in negotiating a new contract, which is a bit surprising since he seems to fit their ideal personality traits to a 'T'.

Yeah I think they view Zay as their a lot receiver of the future.

Shame that Matthews couldn't find a long term fit here though. Definitely a Buffalo type of guy, personality wise.

The mid season trade for Benjamin put the kibosh on Matthews being the number 1. Injuries ruined his chance at being the number 2.

He’s a nice guy but not a good receiver. The Eagles were trying to dump him as he fell to 4 on their depth chart. He came to the Bills and they went out and got a guy to fill his role a few weeks later. He’s just not explosive enough. He’s limited. Matthews will go to one of those other receiver starved teams at like $6M a year. He can be a possession guy on a team like Cleveland, SF or the Ravens. I wish him good luck because he seems like a good dude but his production will easily be replaced.

Yeah, with TT as a QB you tend to forget about WRs...except when you see the injury report of course!

...so you're saying they were mostly INACTIVES on Sunday??...........what about the Witness Protection Program as an alternative?.....

Bills WR Jordan Matthews said Tuesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he was given "bad diagnoses" from doctors in 2016 on his knee and ankle that were rectified when he was traded from Philadelphia to Buffalo last August. "I thought they were both things that were going to heal on their own," he said. "But once I got around Buffalo's doctors, they got me in touch with the right people and then I got really good feedback. We ended up finding out there were other things I was dealing with." Matthews had surgery on his knee and ankle last December. "They actually told me that, 'Man, it's a good thing that you didn't play more games, you didn't practice more. Because you needed to come here and get this procedure done as soon as possible.'" Matthews said he suffered a "bad knee injury" in 2016 training camp with the Eagles, then fractured his right ankle against the Packers that season. "The bone that they took out of my ankle [in December 2017] that I was playing with the rest of [the 2016 season], you guys could have played table tennis with that," he said.

It's too bad he didn't have that surgery much earlier in the season so he could have recovered enough to be evaluated accurately.  He was really good in Philly before he got hurt and it's a crap shoot as to whether he'll ever recover fully.

A lot of people here are saying he isn't very good but we never got a chance to see what he can really do.  Also, of course, TT.

Unless he wants big money, I'd re sign him. He is a good reciever that dealt with injuries this year. Him, Benjamin and Jones(assuming he improves) coukd be really good next year

Way too many possession receivers with the same skill sets. Matthews is replaceable and I would keep Deonte over him.

Move Zay to the slot and find someone to split time with Deonte on the outside.

Zay, Deonte, Reilly >> Jordan Matthews at this point

I’d agree if this were true. I’m not going to be melodramatic over the loss of JMatt, but he has shown more than Reilly and Zay. Isn’t Zay the number two right now? If so, that’s scary. JMatt is nothing special, but we are extremely void of WR talent.

So Bills were traded a bad WR; good thing to watch out for in future trades.

Matthews is a quality slot option. Unfortunately, that's also what Zay Jones (with any luck) will become. What the Bills need as an outside receiver opposite Benjamin who can take the top off a defense. That's not Matthews. Hopefully, the Bills pursue Allen Robinson or a speedy mid round pick.

I was going to start a thread about if we should bring him back or not.  I say Yes since we don't have anyone else.  But I guess the Process says otherwise.  I think we're now down to KB and Zay.

WE GOTTA GET SOME DECENT WRS SOMEWHERE.  No matter who the QB is.

Don't forget when he fractured his thumb when he slammed the ball into the turf after his td in atlanta. He also blew a play in the red zone by not getting out of bounds when the clock was ticking (tampa?)..the clock ran out at the 20 or so yard line..

Chark from ellessuu is your answer to the need.
