Mike Pettine speculation-interviewing w Cleveland

You might be right. But it seems like the longer the Browns wait, the more guys pull out. If they wait on Quinn and Pettine pulls out, it's Quinn or nothing. And Quinn could very well just follow suit, and stay put.

I think the Browns know that Pettine is not pulling his name out. Sounds like he wants the job badly.

If I'm Marrone, I'd be on the phone with Pepper Johnson right now.

The timing is going to screw just about everyone. If Pettine lands the job, he will be behind the 8-ball in getting a staff in place. And we will be scrambling to get our defensive coaches in place; I doubt they would even reach out to Pepper Johnson until they know Pettine is gone.

Timing could not be worse. They just find out Gase is out, so are probably in scramble mode. Too risky to wait out Quinn, IMO.

On the plus side...this means Quinn would be available for the BILLS next year when rebuild 17.0 starts..."too early?" "yeah, too soon"

If Pettine leaves, why do you all want Pepper Johnson as our DC? He has never been a DC and we do not need a rookie coordinator. It would be great if we brought him in as a coach for the linebackers.

Chances are, whoever replaces Pettine (should he leave) will be a first time DC. Why not a guy who has been with Belichik for 14 years? Could do far worse. Likely, he will end up in Houston with Romeo. Perahps we pillage somebody from the Jets or Ravens defensive staff? Or, maybe it will be Donnie Henderson.

Let the Browns have Hackett. He's a young up and coming coach with experience coaching young QB's. I hear he has a ground breaking new offense where the QB stands in the shotgun and hands it to the RB and he runs up the middle for 1 yard

i wouldnt be surprised if we see a few other names pop up.

It's been reported a couple times that they want to interview Quinn, again. Never heard about the initial interview, but I still don't think a decision will come anytime soon. Possibly before the Super Bowl.

EDIT: And as I say that...

@Eric_Branch: Jim Harbaugh said #Browns have contacted #49ers regarding Cleveland's head-coaching opening. Declined to offer name(s).

Browns line up second interviews with Pettine, Quinn

With Adam Gase becoming the latest candidate to shun Cleveland's advances, the Browns are zeroing in on the only two names still alive on their coaching wish list.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Buffalo Bills defensive play-caller Mike Pettine will stage second interviews with the Browns this week, according to sources familiar with the team's thinking.

Pettine will talk with Cleveland's brass on Tuesday night and Quinn will meet with the team in the New York/New Jersey area later this week. That meeting would need to happen at least a week before the kickoff of Super Bowl XLVIII.

Asked if Pettine is simply going through the motions to gain interview experience, Tim Graham of The Buffalo News tweeted that a source close to the coach said that he wants the job "badly."

Pettine spent years as Rex Ryan's trusted assistant and with the Ravens and Jets. Pettine's work with New York's defense is chronicled in Nicholas Dawidoff's "Collision Low Crossers," a gridiron epic painting him as the son of a coach and a football lifer. Pettine's Bills shattered a franchise record with 57 sacks in 2013.

Greggo Marrone says he can obviously do everything but you can't expect him to do it all. Or something like that.

It's Jim Tomsula, their DL Coach (and, incidentally, a guy I'd hope Buffalo would pursue as DC if Pettine took the Browns' gig)

I'd love Pettine to stay. But he wasn't as good as Wanny was bad. I don't think his replacement would be too difficult to find.

I'm betting you said the same thing when Wanny replaced Edwards.

I am sure that somewhere in this thread this was mentioned, but I couldn't read through the whole thing to find out.

How ironic would it be if the Bills lost Pettine to the Browns. The most likely reason Chud was fired was because the Buffalo defense knocked out Hoyer for the season and the team pretty much collapsed after that.

Yeah...what the heck?

Except it wasn't, in retrospect. Edwards was a bit over his head, but he wasn't fully oblivious to what was happening on the field. Give Edwards last year's defense and I bet you be has a better year than Wanny.

You guys can make jokes..

The leading candidate Broncos OC Adam Gase turned down a chance to interview with the Browns. While they are still interested in interviewing Seahawks OC Dan Quinn after the super bowl. They are also interested in current Falcons OC Dirk Koetter.

The simple fact that Pettine was given a second interview petty much means that he blew them away with the first interview. JMO

"And Pettine had a strong interview last week."

Cause people have heard of him! That automatically makes him a great choice. I'd be shocked if they brought Peppers in for anything more than a position coach. Likely he'd want to replace most of defensive staff which agai nto do now would hurt the Bill's much more than promoting one of their existing coaches to DC. The only way they look outside would be if they felt none of the position coaches were qualified at all.

I bet if you polled most fans on this website about if they'd prefer Marrone or Pettine as Head Coach of the Bills - they'd take Pettine by a huge margin.

And truthfully, I'd go with Pettine too.

I don't care.. he has 5 SB rings (2 as a player and 3 as a coach)...He has been on a defensive staff that wins this very division every single year for over a decade. I'll take the system he installs any day over Pettine's. Edited by YoloinOhio

Meh. Tim Graham lives to make Bills fans squirm.
