Boogie Basham optimism

Love Boogie, he made plays every time he was on the field.

That said, there was tons of optimism and hype around AJ last year too, and we know how that turned out. At least Boogie has had multiple moments on the field.

Everybody seems to be bashing A.J. I would first consider just how many snaps he had last year and then I would replay the hit on Tua which was probably the best QB hit of the entire season. He...at least to me seems very fast and with the vet leadership, I'm willing to bet the tune changes a bit this year.

Shaq Lawson was a healthy scratch for the JETS in the last couple games and was cut heading into week 18. I'm not expecting him to have more than a minimal role on the team. Basham has inside/outside versatility. I'll be surprised if he's a healthy scratch at any point, unless he just doesn't put the work in. If anything it would be Lawson and Epenesa competing for the final active spot on gameday.

Last year we rostered 6 DEs. This year we appear to only have 5 rosterable DEs so I'm not entirely sure what the plan is. Maybe they don't plan on rotating Von Miller nearly as much as they usually rotate the DEs so they're comfortable rostering one less player. But I'm pretty sure they had 5 DEs active on gamedays last year so I think those 5 will all be active nearly every game.

I agree with you on Shaq. I don't think he is a lock for the 53. If he makes it I wouldn't be at all surprised if they use him as a specialist edge setter against some of those run heavy teams you listed in another thread yesterday. Something we have missed since he left is a really reliable edge setter who understands lane discipline and funnels the ball back inside. It is what got AJE's snaps reduced as things went on last year and remember they sat him in Tennessee which was a it of a surprise to people at the time because he had started the season reasonably well? His lowest snap count in games he was active was vs Indy. They don't trust him setting the edge in the run game. And with good reason.

I agree on the general depth at the position point too. The only bit I slightly disagree on is the Epenesa inactive bit... in the sense that at the moment I think the depth in respect of the "big ends" in this system (which is usually LE for McDermott at Frazier) is better with Greg, Boogie and Shaq. Their "rush end" depth would appear to me to be much more Von Miller and AJE. Now they used Boogie at RE some last year and they used AJE at LE some too (normally on obvious passing downs opposite Hughes) so it isn't totally determinative but the two end jobs are not the same in this defense. The rush end plays the 9 tech and the big end plays that 5/7 tech depends on our alignment. After Von the closest we have to a rush end in terms of skillset and body type is AJ. Unless they find more depth I expect him to be up a ton.

I think & believe he will have on elf the best second year jumps i really liked that pick & he showed some flashes as they say last season & given that some of the older guys are now gone he should get more playing time then a complete year in the off season training he should be golden .

Then if he can learn some subtle tricks from Jordan i feel he will just continue t get better & by the end of the season barring any injury's could be a force on the Bills D !

I can't wait to see the new & improved Bills team !!

He’s a 2nd round pick that has played two years and couldn’t crack the rotation.  There’s good reason for people to bash him.    There’s still hope, but if one would project him in year 3, most would say he’s a backup depth player that will be fighting for a roster spot once his rookie contract is expired.

So they drafted another college power rusher then tried to turn him into a speed rusher, is that what we are supposed to take from the "weight under control" line? If they did, then one of Boogie or AJE better kick on.

Yeah this seems odd on their part, they should draft 34 outside LBs and make them ends

Basham had just one sack fewer than Rousseau despite playing less than half the number of snaps as Greg (531-201)

I think there's a realistic chance that Boogie could end up being the better player in the long run.

So Rousseau will end up 2nd team all pro behind Basham I can live with that !!!

Considering they drafted him AFTER landing Rousseau last year, he was a luxury pick and must have been rated significantly higher than other 2nd round options.

The past few years our DBs and LBs have been a strength while our DL has held the defense back.

Now he have Miller in the fold, plus an upgrade at DT and Oliver another year under his belt.

If only one of Basham, Rousseau or Epenesa make a jump this year (which is likely that at least one of them will) our DLine will be a big strength. Which makes our #1 ranked D SCARY.

Personally I think Boogie can be a good starting "big end" in the NFL in a similar way to how Shaq played for us in 2019 before he left for Miami. He can stop the run, push the pocket some and get some clean up production where Von, Greg, Ed have made things happen and flushed QBs out. I think that sort of sack production Shaq had in his final year - 6/6.5 sacks - is about where you can realistically hope he gets but that is probably his ceiling. I don't think he can be a difference making pass rusher. He doesn't have an explosive first step and he lacks the technique especially with his hands to win consistently against good NFL tackles. That was pretty much where I was on him coming out and I haven't seen anything yet to make me doubt that. Let's see how the body transformation goes.

so glad he was higher on our draft board than Humphrey

  • 3 months later...

Anyone have info on how much he weighs now? He's definitely gained weight.

Also, talked to a former athletic trainer over the weekend who worked at Wake and NC A&T. said that Basham and Darryl Johnson were tremendous to work with - always relaxed, dancing, hyped.

Sometimes they are and sometimes they are not. As a general rule, it is probably best not to write off a rookie. If a segment of this board had their way in Allen's rookie season, he wouldn't be here today...

Confirms my eyeball test and the box score. I started a thread a few days ago about Boogie. He looks really fit and continues to produce wow plays on limited snaps.

Credit to Epenessa who was making plays too.

Amazing what happens when you have DTs doing their job and add a game wrecker on the opposite end of the line.

He claims he's lost weight. I guess he played last year at 285. Bills have him listed at 281, but that may be out of date.

Bills fans said that Eric Moulds was crap, too.

It's true that not every player makes it in the NFL.

It's also true that some players take a couple of years to develop and learn, and become better players.

Expecting automatic impacts from every single player is unrealistic.

I would love to know who wanted Allen cut his rookie year.

I bet most people wanted him to just play better. He achieved that, in spades.

Short memory, my friend. There were a number of posters on this board who were adamant he would never be a good NFL QB. Feel free to take a stroll down memory lane in the threads during his rookie year.

That’s not the same as wanting him cut lol. It’s okay to say it didn’t happen.

I know a lot of people hate PFF, but they rated Settle prior to 2020 season as one of the best run stopping DT’s in the NFL.  We didn’t grab him to sack people, but to stop guys like Henry from penetrating and blowing it out like that one play last year.  Last year we had him under 2 yards a carry until he broke out.  Jackson is also known for these abilities.

Oliver and Phillips are our penetrators.  Phillips may get back to form from when here with 9.5 sacks as a DT.  That’s rare.

Jones and Settle are beasts. mark my words

I thought it was obvious Thursday night. Long lean and mean looking.

The whole DL looks pretty jacked and mean.

D-line looked big and quick up the middle and quick and nasty off the edge. The secondary and linebacking core looked like it picked up from last season but with a bit more athleticism from the corners (which with Tre out is impressive). Looking forward to seeing how the Bills can dominate a Titans team that has had their number the past two seasons.

I also thought it was obvious. He looked noticeably slimmer to me (in a good way), and was significantly faster. His sack was a chase down of Stafford. Last year’s Boogie doesn’t have the wheels to make that play.
