For example, at Notre Dame the students take out their keys and shake them to make noise on 3rd down. I think something that reflects the fan base and region would be ideal. Interested to hear your thoughts! (Hate to feel like I have to give a disclaimer, but yes I am aware there is a 2019 thread about this. Figured 2 years is long enough.) Loud belch or fart noise?
BubbaT
Nothing. Make noise as fans. The train whistle is overused and I just get sick to death of hearing it. The fact other stadiums do "artificial" type things doesn't make me feel like we have to keep up with them. 1

I consider myself #1 authority on the matter, as someone who has been hit by a train.... and yet, i love the horn! Dunno why, dont care why, i say break it out on 1st, 2nd, 4th downs as well. Add a 5th down, simply for more train horn! On a serious note, I used to love the herd stampede noise! People hate the train, they could easily pack it up for that one. Do they still show the herd on the jumbotron on 3rds? They did when i was a kid Edited December 10, 2021 by BillsShredder83

Probably not a popular opinion, but it's old, it's cheesy, it was never particularly special, and it hasn't aged particularly well. It also conjures up images of a different era where the team was better than it is now. The current team deserves its own schtick. 1

I'm Spartacus
The train horn should have been gone years ago. I'm with the majority that the fans will do the 3rd down pump up cheering. Didn't mind the thundering buffalo stampede video back in the day though.

JohnBonhamRocks
Thanks for all the great responses everyone! My favorite idea is the thundering buffalo herd with fans stomping along. Maybe even mix the Falls in with the herd. I do like the work whistle idea, too. Checks the “reflect the fanbase” box. Interesting about Amtrak if that’s true. Most logical explanation I’ve seen for the train horn - money talks.

The crowd needs all the prodding that they can get. I sit near the top of the lower bowl and even though everyone stands, most of them make zero noise. The place is at about 25% noise capacity this season. Bingo! I've had the same observation this season. The homefield advantage isn't what it used to be. My theory is alot of the older fans have been drifted away from going to the games over the recent years and it is a much younger crowd who probably weren't even born yet during the Super Bowl years when Rich Stadium would truly be rocking.

There is a certain breed of "sports fan" that is at the game to feed off the energy, be out with friends, it's something to do...get drunk....it's that type of thing for them. Sabres games have been cursed with these types for years now. I always laugh at the number of women I see, obviously dragged to the game by their husband/boyfriend sitting next to them, who ARE READING A BOOK WHILE AT THE SABRES GAME. For the younger/trendier crowd it's a place to be, a place to be seen, a place to take a bunch of pics to upload on Social Media. I like the aspect of running into friends at games but I'm ultimately there to watch the game itself. Each passing year it loses a little bit of the gameday magic for me personally. I think mostly because the atmosphere has slowly but steadily changed over the years.
