As to salaries if they are 4+ year vet isn't their salary guaranteed anyway for the year?

Yes and no.  To my understanding, if they player does not re-sign, the contract is guaranteed for the season.  But if they do re-sign with a new team, the new salary would typically offset and the original team would pay the balance.  I think some players could double dip based on the language of their contract.  Related, contracts for vets signed after week 1 (L. Bell, A. Peterson, etc.) do not automatically guarantee.

Isn't Nickell Robey-Coleman on a practice squad?

They may wait until the last weeks of the season, when teams dump high-priced veterans. If one of them wants to play with a contender, he might sign with the Bills for a reasonable salary.

Why would they "dump high priced veterans"....in the "last weeks of the season"? What's the logic in that? At that point the salary cap hit isn't a major concern

Outside of vet street FA's here's  Some Ex-Bills on other teams PS may help.

Nickell Robey (Lions) had some promise (mostly as slot/3rd DB)

Lafayette Pitts (Falcons) was coming on strong for awhile in camp.

Kevon Seymour (Ravens) played sparingly in 2016 but is still kicking around the NFL (I'd pass on him)

Breon Borders (Titans). He's been kicked around a few teams, but has some raw talent.

Outsiders we can poach.

Trayvon Henderson (Bengals) showed some flash before his ACL but he's back.

Darquez Denard (Colts - Former 1st Round pick 2014)

Sean Davis (Patriots) was a 2nd round pick of the Steelers and played 5 years for them.  A vet with some promise, plus info on NE.

Bryce Thomspon (Saints) Was an up and comer considered a lockdown corner before he got hurt. He's back up and running.

T.J Green  (Texans). 6'3" 215 runs a 4.36.  Former 2nd rd pick of Colts who has all the physical tools but needs to put it together.

Parry Nickerson (Vikings) Raw speed at 4.32. Great athlete, that needs some work on technique.

Why is EJ Gaines not on this list

Robey-Coleman

He's more of a Nickel Corner. Unless you're planning on moving Taron to the Outside on a number of plays, all you'd be doing is taking Taron off the field for Robey-Coleman. Not sure how that really helps.

Also have been seeing a lot of people saying we'll just be bringing someone up from the Practice Squad. And of course we will. But someone will almost certainly be brought in to take that person's place on at least the Practice Squad. And rules being what they've been the past couple seasons, that can be anyone.

Lets steal somebody from Buffalo's Practice squad :flirt:

Just as I posted two posts above you, I doubt they do that and not bring in someone to at least take their spot on the Practice Squad.

You don't want someone else to get hurt and then you're down 2 players on your roster and behind the 8 ball on getting someone prepared to play for this team.

His first name describes his position.

Yeah, that is my concern too, injuries for whatever reason sometimes congregate at a position.

Panther’s don’t have a second or third round draft pick next year.

They have Gilmore, Bouye and D. Jackson.

Jackson is a free agent next year and will be garnering a princely sum as he has taken a major step forward this year.

He would be an excellent addition and use of a pick for a guaranteed starter.

He did start with "outside street FA".  Gaines is a street FA at this point.

Kirkpatrick was decent for a few years, not sure if he still has it, but why not kick the tires on him and Dunbar. Put them on the PS while we hope the others can step up. Losing TRE is bad, especially with SB aspirations. Tampa Bay will be much tougher matchup now.  The rest of the schedule we may slide by, but in the playoffs KC, LA Chargers, even Cinci will prove to be tougher tests.  As far as the SB, the NFC is loaded with high octane passing teams. This is a BIG LOSS. Outside of Allen and Diggs, Tre is the MVP.

We really need to start getting more pressure on the QB and hopefully the whole defensive scheme steps up and figures out ways to neutralize #1 WRs.

Dunbar had knee surgery at the end of last season and I wonder if he's not "right" and that's why he's being cut from PS after PS

Now that Tre is on IR, is there a rule that allows us to pro-rata the remainder of his contract for this year (about $6-7m) and offer the same amount to another player (assuming you can even find someone close to being that good)?

No. Players on IR and PUP count against the cap.

A common statement in the wake of today's news on Tre'Davious White has been "I'm sure they'll bring someone in for depth". It's possible they stay pat with who they have. It's also possible they poach someone off another team's Practice Squad.

But in the event they go the veteran FA route, I thought I'd take a look at what's out there. Below is a list compiled from NFLTradeRumors.co List of Top 100 Available Free Agents - along with their ranking on the list overall and their age: (https://nfltraderumors.co/top-50-2021-nfl-free-agents/)

9.) Quinton Dunbar, 29

21.) Daryl Worley, 26

22.) Gareon Conley, 26

27.) D.J. Hayden, 31

31.) Prince Amukamura, 32

52.) Blidi Wreh-Wilson, 31

56.) Dre Kirkpatrick, 31

72.) Akeem King, 29

78.) B.W. Webb, 31

Quinton Dunbar was brought in for a visit with the team in late September of this year. Daryl Worley was a member of the Bills from 11/3-12/9/20 before being poached from their Practice Squad by Las Vegas. So I'd imagine if we were to make a FA addition, one of them is the most likely move.

Anyone have a preference from the list or an idea of someone on a team's Practice Squad?

Fixed your list for you

Maybe in Australian rules football you could do that!
