GoBills!
With the new rules of only having to miss 3 games, what guys do you think we are able to stash on IR? I know they have to make the 53 man roster, but cutting and signing is something we done in the past. Sweeney - 6 ft 5 250 lbs, 3 years of back luck but I think he is a good IR stash if his foot injury is going to be multiple weeks. Issah Hodgins - Right now he is on the outside looking in. I think he has NFL talent but we are just too loaded this year. If not IR I don't know if he makes it to practice squad. Stevenson - I loved what I saw speed, and vision wise on the return today and his play last week. I think he is a gamer and will be our guy next year if he isn't this year. New rules - An unlimited number of players can return from a team’s injured reserve list, and they are eligible after missing a minimum of only three games. After three weeks, the player becomes eligible to return to practice. Once he returns to practice, the team has 21 days to place him back on the active roster. Previously, a team had only two IR-return designations it could use in a season and a player was required to miss a minimum of eight weeks. Only players on the 53-player roster after Sept. 1 are eligible to be designated for return from IR or the non-football injury list. 2

MWK
Doyle is a prime candidate. Doesn’t look ready to play and got an injury today. We could look to sign another tackle instead of him (Hopefully not just keeping Bobby Hart). Could see Stevenson or Hodgins too, maybe a guy like Wildgoose too if they are worried he could get claimed. Edited August 22, 2021 by MWK

BigAl2526
I think the Bills would rather keep Sweeney on the 53 man roster if they can. Doyle would be a great IR candidate as well as Stevenson and Hodgins. Doyle could probably use an entire year on IR to work out the rough spots in his game. Hodgins and Stevenson can stay on the IR until/unless needed because of injury. Edited August 22, 2021 by BigAl2526 2

As a draft pick he may be a good candidate and stay there for all or majority of the season.

In the last few seasons, you could only designate a player to return from IR to the 53 man roster if he was IRed after the 53 man roster was reached. I don't know what the rules are this year, but obviously there are changes that have been made.

Ya Digg? "Only players on the 53-player roster after Sept. 1 are eligible to be designated for return from IR or the non-football injury list." If The Bills can justify putting Doyle on IR, they can do it any time, I don't think they'd worry much about trying to bring him back this season. Sweeney would be pouched if the Bills cut him to try and get him on a return eligible IR. They may or may not be able to sneak Hodgins and Stevenson on to such a return eligible IR. I think a guy like Hodgins may end up on IR before making the final 53 as with the WR core the team has, really not a place for him. Based on last weeks catch and this weeks PR, don't think they can risk cutting Stevenson, so think he makes the 53 as the 6th WR. For that matter if a WR were to get hurt, maybe they just go with 5 for awhile then too or likely can find a FA as good as Hodgins to become the 6th WR. I think the same with Doyle. Doubt they want to risk cutting him, but can't see two rookie OT's being the teams only backups there. Another name too is Hamlin. To me though, these are all guys you just put on IR before final 53 and say see you next year! Team has enough depth without them. 32 minutes ago, 17islongenough said: What players are eligible to be cut and not be subject to waivers? I believe if you're in the league 4 or more years not subject to waivers. You become a FA once cut. 5 minutes ago, mattynh said: Can a guy come back if he goes on IR in the preseason? Last year Been had side deals with vets he cut and brought back since (I think) they were not subject to waiver claims and were total free agents. We cut Marlowe and Andre roberts with handshake deals and brought them back once we put our guys on IR. Kelly the Dog
There are certain guys, like Taiwan Jones if they want to keep him, or Breida if they want to keep him, they can say to we want you on our 53 but we need to keep Stevenson or Kumerow or whomever, and we promise we will sign you right back. They may not want to do that if they can be signed to another teams 53 (which I think guarantees their contract), but if they like their standing and team, which Breida seems to, they could easily agree. Matt_In_NH
It is one thing to just stash a guy for next year by putting them on IR before the 53 is settled. But not having the option to bring them in this year kind of sucks. An alternative is to make an initial 53 with a mix of guys you think are most likely to get claimed even if they have injuries, then putting a guy on IR and signing someone back (say a LB) that is needed but not as likely to get claimed. How soon after you make the 53 can you put someone on IR? Stevenson is a guy that comes to mind, supposedly in boot after yesterday's game. Would like to keep him but also would like the option to bring him onto the roster if something goes bad with McKenzie. 6 hours ago, Ethan in Portland said: Doyle should injure himself because there is no way he makes the final 53. IgotBILLStopay
Is there a limit on the number of players we can put on IR? Obviously the strategy is to put a bunch of players on the 53, then move to IR to make way for the true 53. Shd be the strategy to preserve our depth in the trenches. Zimmer, Phillips, Doyle are the top candidates for this strategy. Maybe do it with a couple of LBs too.
