2020 NFL Team Penalties: Bills With 5th Most

This actually surprised me, as I don't feel like they've been flagged a ton in most games this season.

I was REALLY (not really) shocked to see that New England has the fewest penalties in the league.

A lot of other playoff teams are right up there with the Bills, so I'm not quite sure exactly what it means. Just found it interesting.

I am not surprised for Bills are flagged for plays other teams are not.

i usually look at this site:

https://www.nflpenalties.com/

https://www.nflpenalties.com/team/buffalo-bills?year=2020

I think it has info football DB does not have including ref crew.

My observations:

White seemed to be rusty at start of year and he resorted to grabbing sometimes.  He has cleaned it up.

I noticed is that Lee Smith is blocking differently than he did last year and has gotten no penalties.

His critics who said he gets 2 per game (never on average) are as bad as Josh Allen's critics.

Special teams are better avoiding penalties this year which is partly why Roberts is doing better.

Lack of time in preseason really hurt Offense line and that was compounded by injuries forcing rotations and Spain crash.

My impression recently, is that there have been fewer of the more irritating types, especially the pre-snap variety.

There have been some fairly bogus ones, but also the oddball facemask by our starting QB on opposing D-Line. I don't suppose there have been too many of those, ever. ;)

seems like we had a 3-game stretch where we had first-and-goal from inside the 10, and then in the blink of an eye it was 1st-and-goal from the 30.

Still, I would have thought we would be somewhere in the middle of the pack, not 5th most.

Not surprising considering it takes us 5 TDs to finally have one count.  Refs have been brutal all year long.

Me too, bro. When I saw the title of your post, it definitely surprised me. Besides a couple games, we’ve seemed pretty clean this year.

We are higher than I thought we would be, but
I did notice that it doesn’t matter when you’re winning... 😁👍

the Tenn and KC games were the worst for flags as several were unsportsmanlike-frustration flags and the Denver game had several O-line flags in the 3rd and 4th quarters where we had points taken away...Josh was heard on a field mike saying..."so how many time we gotta score "?

I noticed Morse and Ike B (G) getting flagged grabbing DL jersey as Josh is about to pass that lineman; seems like a reaction to wanting to protect Josh who either would have escaped or ran by the linemen or at the worst been tacked near the LOS.

Then there is the dreaded hit on the qb foul where we seem to not pull-up or lunge at his legs trying to make a play/sack

And yes we have been one of the top teams for penalties during the McClappy era

3rd most penalty yards in the league makes the clutch offensive statistics look even more impressive. 3rd down conversion, 1st downs per play, 4th down per game, time of possession and punts per game.

On average they had to overcome over 62 yards per game and still produced at a very efficient level.

Interesting... all the bills games I've seen this year seemed low in penalties. It must mean penalties as a whole are down this year.

I do find it very very odd that a heavy run team such as the Patriots are so low in penalties. Maybe I'm wrong but offensively speaking, I feel that if you run the ball more you would get more penalties.

It shows the best teams can overcome Refs bad calls.

Good data but does it include when flags were thrown, a’la third down, red zone, etc? I have not read all of your links so just asking.

Not sure if they measure how many TD’s called back, but that would be interesting. In addition, looking specifically at NE*** flags for and against in the time frame in question. Easy to mask things if you spread the data set out enough.

Just some basic questions I ask when given some data.

Okay, the statement you had seemed to be implying the sole reason backing it up was the 2020 bills, glad you have more substantial evidence 👍

I haven't dug super into it myself. I just know I've seen multiple sources support that penalties don't equate to winning or losing.

I wish there were a graph that shows the trend from week to week throughout the season.  I think this is something we’ve gotten much better with, but am too lazy to look up

So we are always told that generally more talented and disciplined teams have fewer penalties. How is it that Pats have 10 fewer penalties then any other team? Bills and KC almost double. After the neck tackle by the OT on Cam’s TD run I think we know the Hoodie and pan to Kraft have to factor in 🤷🏻‍♂️

The scary thing is the offense is so good and they gobble up chunks of yardage so easily that it typically doesn't have any effect on them.

3rd in yards per drive, 2nd in points per drive, 2nd in drive success rate, 2nd in time of possession per drive...
