Who will be the next Bills player to go on the wall?

Recommended Posts

The (usually intolerable) Schopp and the Bulldog actually ran a pretty solid show Friday. They each drafted their own “all time Bills Defenses” and it was a nice break from reality. It kind of has me thinking about Bills of the past and who will be next to be recognized. Common thought will most likely be that it’s Kyle Williams but that doesn’t have to be right.

Most of the big time 90s guys are taken care of and most of the pre super bowl year guys are too. The Flutie years were fun and a few of those players were really good. The drought era really left a lot to be desired. There was few solid players that stuck it out and a few excellent ones that didn’t last but nobody really jumps out at you. Guys like Fred, Eric Wood, Moorman and Kyle all have arguments for being up there but a lot goes into it. Im going to say the next guy is Moulds. I’m actually not really sure how he isn’t up there yet but I’m sure it’s personal. Moulds is the second best WR to ever play for the organization and is a no brained IMO. There’s not a ton to talk about right now, so I figured I’d throw in a change of pace. Who do you guys say is next?

Schobel is long overdue.

Kyle should and will likely get his chance.

Fred is a fan favorite, but not sure if he'll get up there.  Gilchrest made it and Fred meant a lot more to the Bills for a lot longer.

Remove the murderer and there will be more room.

Schobel is so weird for me. I can’t ever remember thinking he was really that good but he was pretty solid. He’s like one of those guys that you almost didn’t realize was “good” until he stopped playing. Like to me, Hughes is probably better. It might not end up being remembered that way but I just never felt strong about Schobel. Maybe it’s just me.

Seriously, Fred met more??.

Most of his time he didn't even start. Good team guy, effort, citizen for sure but Gilchrist was a different league. In a day when black was bad, when personality was not allowed, when an athletes voice was frowned on Cookie was the man.

He was disliked because of race by many...and ignored as a result. Hell, Bills fans loved kickers more than Cookie , Pete Gogolak.unless you were at the rockpile every week, or in the CFL stadium.

He played for the Bills or 3 years.

They might go with a native WNY'r in Shane Conlan.  Not a real long career with the Bills but was part of the rise out of obscurity.  Did I read right that Bennett is not up there yet?  Moulds deserves consideration but my feeling is that TPTB are looking a little further back in time.

Dark horse candidate.  Charles Romes 1977-1986.  Played in every game he was on the roster and is placed at 8th all time in number of games started for the Bills.  No Jerry Butler to this point?

Once again, no one should go up there before Butch Byrd.

This is worth repeating. I don’t understand how he’s not up there already.

Is there something not publicly known, or is this just an oversight? All time leader in receptions, and from my minor experiences, a great guy.

There are certainly a few guys up there, that weren’t as good as Bennet or Moulds. Times are different now and maybe the current ownership has a difference in opinion on a few guys but it’s hard to say. I’m not old enough to have seen Ferguson play in person but from all I have seen and read...it’s a bit of a stretch to have him up there. There’s no way he deserves it more then Moulds IMO. If Moulds played with Kelly, who knows what he could have been.

He was a huge contributor to  2 Bills championship teams. A lot of other names in this thread did nothing but lose. Butch is 78 now, I'd like to see it happen soon.

I met him a number of times as he lived in our community and my sister used to babysit their kids. I remember going to their place to watch games on TV, and traded football cards with his son.

I’ve told this here before, but he was at the door talking to my dad one day and I came out to show them the physics trick I learned as a 4th grader. If you squeeze a raw egg with equal pressure on all sides, it will not break. Apparently, my pressure was NOT equal, and I blasted Butch with a raw egg all over the suit he was wearing. OOPS!  He didn't kill me, so HE BELONGS ON THE WALL!   :)

It should happen while he can appreciate it, for sure.

Byrd had 40 INT’s in 98 games with 5 TD’s.

Second place?

Tony Greene with 37 INT in a whopping 128 games, with only 2 TD’s.

Butch, then Kyle. Let’s not forget the past.

He has second most sacks all-time in Bills history. He had an injury riddled 2008 season in which he only had one sack, but the other eight years he averaged just under 10 sacks a year. All in all from what I remember he was really good, but his career was only 9 years long.

@StHustle, speak your mind, brother!

Not about to get into an OJ debate. But will make this one statement: You don't remove a guy who was found not guilty...period. Some even make great arguments that you don't remove players cause of what they do later in their lives regardless what it is. He was one of the greatest bills players ever and should remain.

No Moulds on either list? The guy is probably the most deserving guy not on the wall. After Reed, it’s Moulds and nobody is even close to those guys.

You kind of wonder with both Byrd and Bennett if there is something that the public does not know that precludes them from entry.  Some guys are modest and maybe they asked not to be put up for the time being.

Other than the Brady pick in New England, I can't remember one play Schobel ever made for the Bills. How he managed to get all those sacks yet still remain invisible is impressive. Also, he seemed permanently ornery.
