HOUSE
Browns OC Van Pelt to change Mayfield's footwork By Nick Shook Around The NFL Writer Published: Feb. 19, 2020 at 01:39 p.m. You can count on one hand how many offensive coordinators Baker Mayfield has had in his brief NFL career, but you're almost out of fingers after just two seasons. Hopefully, we won't end up saying the same about his changes in footwork. Mayfield's new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt told reporters Wednesday he plans on changing the quarterback's footwork, which he wants "to be like Mozart, not Metallica." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001102421/article/browns-oc-van-pelt-to-change-mayfields-footwork Edited February 19, 2020 by HOUSE

C.Biscuit97
I loved Van Pelt when he was here but what exactly has done at the nfl level? Wasn’t he just basically Rodgers coffee boy?

LeGOATski
Aren't OCs limited in the amount of time they get with the players? Did Van Pelt mention who he's contracting for the work? Probably the lowest bidder....

Billy Claude
What I don't understand is why AVP would go public with this. Mayfiel6 doesn't seem to be someone to take this as constructive criti ism. It's pretty bad judgement on van pelts part.

Well, as I recall in his exit press conference Mayfield made it clear he had no plans to work with a private QB coach..... ....and yes, the coaches and assistants are not supposed to work with the players and give them direction in the off-season, as I understand. They're allowed to have an exit interview with each guy, review his season, and give him an off-season conditioning program and a list of things they want him to work on, but how, where, and with whom they work is "up to" the player. 1 hour ago, Logic said: I don't buy it. Actually PFF said Mayfield's season sucked, but Allen's was still worse. ?♂️ IMHO the Browns FO would do better to focus on fixing their OL.
White Linen
I've long thought the footwork cliche is so overrated. I'm not saying it doesn't matter, so please don't attack. I'm just saying when watching today's NFL and how offensive lines change yearly for every team - clean pockets where mechanics and footwork were paramount, hardly exist. These QB's throw off balanced and on the run, most of the time. Now if there's some way to improve footwork on that, fine. 5-7 step drops, hop hop and throw, happen more rarely. Actually, the title is correct. Consider the Browns’ 2019 season. Those brown uniform pants were the appropriate colour. You can still have good or bad mechanics while throwing on the run. Foot placement is actually key while throwing on the run and makes a big difference Edited February 20, 2020 by Buffalo716

Throwing off balance is precisely a footwork problem, in many cases. Not if you're knocked off-balance obviously, but a lot of times the reason you're off balance is that you didn't use your feet correctly. Footwork is important in crowded pockets, and there's a specific type of footwork that's best for throwing on the run. It's an issue. It doesn't solve everything by any means, but it helps. On the other hand, some guys can't change things, their bad or good habits are too deeply ingrained. It's worth looking at, though. For what it's worth, AVP is a smart cookie and if Mayfield will listen, he's likely to learn something. Sigh. Back to grading student papers. Shouldn't even have written this. I'm speaking of throwing off balance because defenses are forcing pocket passing out of the game and IMO, the reason for the emergence of QB's needing to throw outside the confines of traditional footwork. You can still have good form when moving. You see it all the time with Brady, he moves and sets. Even when he throws on the run, his arm is always at the same level. Its actually pretty incredible So it may not necessarily be "footwork" as just mechanics in general. When EJ was benched after the Texans game a few years ago, his footwork in the game was atrocious and IMO was why he was benched. He needed to get out of game reps and focused on fundamentals if he was going to have any shot 41 minutes ago, Royale with Cheese said: What's he up to this weekend?
