Another Fan
I think I’m in for it pretty deep. A social worker had given me mail for a patient where I work and didn’t bother to open it. So I just found out now I’m that pile was a renewal application for Medicaid. This patient lost her benefits. I just filed everything away. Didn’t know there was a process of renewing? Not sure if I’ll take the fall for this? Any other stories of similar things/mistakes that got you in hot water

Any other stories of similar things/mistakes that got you in hot water Following a corporate directive got me in trouble with a customer one time. I followed the memo in terms of routing a certain product line into the store when ordered versus letting the customer do a direct pickup at the warehouse. The customer ripped me then my boss when he found out he had the option of going to the warehouse. I felt for the customer but my orders were clear and a grounds for termination note was in the memo if somebody went against the memo. Along similar lines another memo concerning warranty claims for a product with instructions for the customer to proceed with any warranty claims directly with the manufacturer. Again, the memo closed with a threat about termination if an employee disregarded the memo. Before I quit it became quite apparent that I was going to be continually caught between management and the customer over a great number of issues. It was never my intent to be in sales after college but sometimes you have to do something to pay the bills. I was never very trusting of people in business before that job but afterward I turned down a number of such jobs even though I could have used the money for that reason.

And anyway, aren't the social workers supposed to help patients take care of that stuff? A kid on one of my open cases got killed by his mom's boyfriend not even 72 hours after I'd last seen them back when I worked for CPS. Bad Things
As soon as I saw this thread, I thought of this... https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/117826699/embarrassment-after-obscene-language-used-in-official-council-letter-drop I know the guy that this happened to, so met him later that day to buy him a couple pints to drown his sorrows. It sounds like a simple office prank from one of his workmates blew up in his face. Fortunately everybody, including the residents were very understanding and no one lost their jobs.

The Jokeman
I was on a final write-up by putting the term BS (not the word just the letters) in a report I filed for a follow up with one of our clients. The only reason I didn't lose my job is had a stellar record before hand and it wasn't a client facing document. I look back and shake my head in disbelief at my stupidity. In less than a month I'll be with the same company (in various names) for 15 years.
Augie
Office Christmas parties. Not me, but two close friends. The first one I worked with was a very smart guy who ran our investment department at the bank. He was also a mean drunk, and beat the crap out of a co-worker in the men’s room at the Christmas party. I never saw him again, but his ex-wife says he’s a mess. Not smart enough, I guess. The second one was a tennis buddy and the ADA in town. He told me the District Attorney actually worked for HIM in private practice.....but one of them had skeletons in the closet. (Guess who!) At their Christmas party they found him in his office on top of his desk, with an attorney who “worked” beneath him (literally and figuratively) ummm, ........well, between him and the desk. He was more of a happy, horny drunk. Apparently, they frown upon that. Behave at those Christmas parties!

Beast
When someone walked away from their computer I used to put pornographic photos up as their screensaver. One guy got mad and told my boss and I got my ass chewed out. That was probably 10 years ago.

One time many years ago I sent myself a suggestive and inappropriate email from a female co-worker's computer. I then replied to her with something like 'I've told you this is inappropriate, blah, blah, blah' and I cc: ed the head of HR, only with a very slight typo in the email address so the cc: didn't actually go anywhere. Of course, my friend missed that detail and when she saw the reply went bombing down to HR to explain that it was just a joke. The head of HR had no idea what she was talking about. Lots of laughs ensued.

Royale with Cheese
I started dating a Nurse from a hospital we were doing referral business with. I lost interest in her after a few dates. Then we stopped getting referrals.... With my current company, I went on another interview. The company offered me the job but since the bonus was going to be prorated since it was August....it was going to be less than what I was making. They didn’t accept my counter offer. Then someone “anonymously” sent an email to our HR Director to let them know I interviewed with them. What a POS that person was.

I didn’t call them idiots, but while running bank branches on multiple occasions I took clients who frequently berated employees up to the teller line and gave them a Cashiers Check for every penny they had in our bank. Waived penalties for early withdrawal on CD’s, and told them they cannot behave that way with our people. Do NOT come back! The jerks were shocked! I guess nobody ever stood up to them. This could have gotten me into trouble (ie voiding an 8% CD in a 5% market), but it never happened. (And we could have fixed it if it ever became a stink.) It made some nasty people think about their behavior, and it made for a VERY loyal staff. They do NOT have to put up with that! . I had to fire someone on the spot for this. She thought she hung up .. didn't. Proceeded to say what a B word the client was and what a pain in the ass ... on and on. This particular client had a direct line to someone WAY above me. I got a call. They said, "you need to terminate this person's employment now." Thirty minutes later, it was done. I ALWAYS hang up, then hit speaker to make sure there's a dial tone, THEN pick up the handset to make sure I get another dial tone ... then I vent. Johnny Hammersticks
Fortunately, I’ve never gotten into hot water since I began my “real” professional career. When I was in my early 20’s, however, I was working for a catering company waiting tables at weddings. It was a fun job, I worked with a bunch of hot girls, and was making some pretty good $ under the table. Sweet gig. Anyway, about half way through the summer they hired this creepy bartender dude who fed us drinks all night long (I think he was trying to impress the young girls). Many of us were putting away 8-10 drinks per shift. I have no idea how the boss didn’t just notice that we were all hammered. So, an anonymous co-worker snitched on the bartender, and my boss got him to confess and give names or he’d call the police on him for serving under age kids. I remember like it was yesterday. Boss called me in to his office when I arrived to work. He asked me if I knew anything about people drinking at work. I knew something was up, so I just admitted to everything. Worst part about it was that he knew I was drunk ? the night of one wedding when I drove the cube truck with all the catering stuff back to the restaurant to unload. I ended up backing into the dumpster and put a huge dent in the rear end ?? He chewed my ass out FIERCELY, but miraculously I didn’t lose my job. Worked there for 4 or 5 years until grad school actually. Edited January 9, 2020 by Johnny Hammersticks

We do contract work and one day when I was younger I got into a pretty big verbal argument with a union guy of one of the clients we were working for. I called him an ####### (which he was) and he immediately called and told his boss who was on site within about 10 min. Things had calmed down a bit and by the time it was all said and done we had even shook hands and the guy said I was “alright” but got thrown off the property for the rest of the day. When I told my boss about it he just laughed and I know he was proud.

DC Tom
I don't think I've ever gotten in trouble at work. I did threaten to throw a manager out an eighth-floor window once...but all that happened is I was told to wait my turn in line. Gotten other people fired, though. Had an absentee manager who showed up for work drunk one morning after his golf outing and tried to take a swing at me in front of the whole company. That was fun.
