Pregame Coverage Preseason Game 1: Colts @ Bills Thurs 8/8

Recommended Posts

The defense really doesn't need to be out there.  I would seriously think about completely sitting Murphy, Hughes, Alexander, Milano, Star, White, Poyer and Hyde.

Edmunds and Shaq should maybe get 1 series.

I want zero injuries to any of the top 45 guys.

Mmmmmm Game Day!

Here's a game day story about the first preseason game. Kent Hull was asked who was the most intense player he played with. Hull said that, as an offensive lineman, he needed a lot of tape and prep time with the trainers so he would arrive 3-4 hours before the game, usually the first one there. But in the '96 season, Hull arrived for the first preseason game over three hours early to find the newly signed Chris Spielman, half dressed and pacing around the locker room. I repeat, for the first preseason game.

Ahhh football. You gotta be part cat, part bull and part nuts.

Bills Today: Frank Gore will take most of the first-team snaps vs. Colts

“What we’re going to do is give Frank most of the work this week and then what we will do with LeSean is give him most of the work, at this point the plan is the following week,” McDermott said. “Part of that is we know LeSean a little bit. This is our first time around Frank and the other piece of it is making sure with two experienced running backs that we keep these guys fresh for the season.”

Buffalo Bills: Storylines to watch in preseason game against Colts

Over the past two weeks, fans have gotten an up close look at this team with plenty to be excited about. While it was a bit up and down, Josh Allen looks improved from a season ago and has quickly built a rapport with new wide receivers John Brown and Cole Beasley.

These past few weeks have also been the first time rookies like Ed Oliver, Cody Ford and Devin Singletary got a real taste of life in the NFL. However, the acclimation process ramps up as the rookies are now going through the process of game preparation as the team prepares for the Colts.

Bills’ Starting Offensive Line

The biggest storyline to watch during this game will be who will be apart of the Buffalo Bills’ starting offensive line. The Bills have been hit hard by injuries across the line this training camp with LaAdrian Waddle lost for the season due to a torn quad, and players like Mitch Morse, Jon Feliciano and Spencer Long recently missing practice time.

During the team’s last training camp practice, the starting line consisted of Dion Dawkins (LT), Quinton Spain (LG), Russell Bodine (C), Cody Ford (RG), and Ty Nsehke (RT).

The move by Cody Ford inside to guard is certainly interesting as he started camp exclusive at right tackle. However, due to injuries he has moved inside to close out camp. This move though didn’t stop the team from listing Ford as their starting right tackle in the first depth chart.

If Ford lines up at right guard against the Colts, and plays well, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him start the regular season there.

CBS announcer Andrew Catalon will do play-by-play and Steve Tasker will be the analyst on the three preseason games carried by WKBW-TV, starting with Thursday’s game with Indianapolis. The fourth preseason game on Aug. 23 against Detroit is a CBS game, with Greg Gumbel and Trent Green on the call and Melanie Collins as the sideline reporter.

Recent hire Maddy Glab is taking over “Bills Tonight” from Rochester TV sports anchor Mike Catalana after games Sunday. Last season, Catalana was replaced by Thad Brown as the sideline reporter on Bills TV games because Brown’s Rochester station, WROC, took the rights away from Catalana’s station, WHAM.

Bills vs. Colts: What's the best way to drive to the game at New Era Field?

Driving to a weekday night Bills game at New Era Field is typically a challenge.

Getting to tonight's preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts has all the makings of a slow-moving drive – especially since you've got regular evening commuters, some construction on the I-90, as well as people headed to the Erie County Fair in Hamburg.

Joe Dibiase wrote a story on this -

https://wgr550.radio.com/articles/opinion/frank-gores-tank-may-be-fuller-lesean-mccoys

Quote

Frank Gore's tank may be fuller than LeSean McCoy's

This year's RB battle could turn out like last year's QB battle:

On Wednesday, Sean McDermott visited with One Bills Live, where he announced that Frank Gore would start at running back in the first preseason game versus the Colts. McDermott added that LeSean McCoy would not play versus Indy, but would get the start next week in Carolina.

We'll see how much Frank Gore and LeSean McCoy end up playing in the preseason. If it's anything significant, that means there's a real competition going on between the two.

McDermott tried to sell that the team is going with Gore first because they know McCoy and are still getting to know Gore. I'm not buying that for a second. There is literally not another running back in the NFL with more tape than Frank Gore. If you don't know what he is as a player by now, you never will.

Compare this year's running back competition to last year's quarterback competition and you'll find similarities that could lead the Bills to a similar result.... (cont.)

He seems to think that Gore starting is a big deal.
