With McD 's approach to his life of evaluating his every day, its not surprising to see his willingness to change when it is warranted even if he meticulous about it.

Alot really depends on the line, losing 3 pro bowl level lineman is the biggest reason they declined.

They weren't exactly killing it with those 3. He was the run game coordinator too right?

With a new offensive line coach and probably 2-3 new starters, it will be a very different offensive line next season.  Hopefully, it will be better.   Once the Bills have the right coach and decent talent, the next issue they'll face on the offensive line is chemistry.  It will be important to get settled quickly on the starters in training camp so they can learn whatever blocking scheme they'll be using and get used to each other.  .

My best guess is George Warhop of the Buccaneers assuming he shakes loose. There isn't a McDermott connection that I know of, but he worked as Brian Daboll's offensive line coach with the Browns. He worked with Leslie Frazier on that Tampa staff and he's done a nice job developing Ali Marpet and was big for Orlando Pace back in the day. He's had an up and down career, but has developed some good players.

I'd prefer Ray Brown though.

I would love it if the Bills were able to lure Bill Callahan here to be our O-line coach. He is the best in the business IMO. Plus he was Daboll 's O line coach when he was o-cdr with the Jets in 08.

Another guy I would like is George Warhop. He should be available now that D.Koetter was fired in TB.  He was Daboll's O line coach when he was the o-cdr in Cleveland in 09-10.

I understand the ties with Ray Brown... but I just don’t see the success.

I’m not against it, just not seeing it. Couldn’t be worse than Juan.

I like Corey Matthaei, KC Assistant Oline coach. Younger guy, been under Any Reid and was there in Philadelphia with McD.

Good call on Matthaei, coached with McDermott in Philly as well. I just hope he brings Mitch Morse with him, and I hope that Juan Castillo did not teach him too much when they were in Philly.

We had a good run game last year and shady looked great, looks like we did pretty good.

Shady looked pretty good last year but the line was still bad. Especially in pass protection. The run game has really dropped off this year and he didn't seem to make any adjustments for it.

Matthaei helped out Alex Smith a ton, and was also talked about being Doug Peterson’s OC briefly.

Thing is OL is going to be crucial. If Morse were to come it would help him out for sure.

Its just one of those things. Does Matthaei have to ability to influence and can he get this squad to fire on all cylinders.

Sometimes younger up and comers have that over older veteran coaches.

I want Greg Roman back and as the run game coordinator.

Man I wish. I loved his offense. His playcalling was awful at times, but that guy is a good coach. What he's doing in Baltimore is just really cool.

He definitely won't have the edge and cred that a guy like Ray Brown does, but could definitely be an interesting hire.

Seems like a McD hire too... vs a big name. But when it’s all said and done they are going to grab who they think can get the job done.

Right!

His biggest problem here was his double relay system of play calling, where he would tell the call to the back up QB who then told it to the starter, leading to many delays of game and little time for audibles and adjustments.

Just curious, why did he leave? For an equal job in AZ?

Could have been a great relationship with Wilks.  His contract could have been up too, but my biggest guess would be that they were getting a new OC that he didn't know if he woul have meshed with.

Ray Brown makes a ton of sense. He's a good coach, they had no talent. He also played in the NFL which I think is a plus for an O line coach. Ironically, Sean Kulger could be available as well Andy they coached together back in 08 in Buffalo.

..oh you said OL coach...i was about to roll out Walsh ,Lombardi,Belichek

I don't know what quality of coach Ray Brown is but he was definitely one of the most remarkable and talented OG's in NFL history.

Didn't become a full time starter until he was 31 then started all but a few games for the next 12 years and is still the oldest position player to start an NFL playoff game,  20 days short of 44 years of age.

One of those players I always wanted on those inconsistent Bills offensive lines in the mid-late 90's.

I hope he’s renting!

An ACC college coach moved into our neighborhood recently. Bought a very nice house. His HC just got fired. Oops! Hopefully he’s guaranteed for enough years to take the sting out, but you lose big time selling a house in less than a year. I hear he’s about to list.

Wait, they fired Crossman?   Where did I miss it?

Someone somewhere saw a tweet, but nothing since has substantiated that.

Except some teams reserve the rights of those coaches until they hire a new head coach and head coach decides which to keep and which to dump.  Every team has good coaches who should not lose jobs and be paid to not work just because head coach is fired.

I believe this is what happened with D’Allesandris. Chan was fired, but we still retained D’s rights. It was then St Doug who came in and fired him. Given the ego of an NFL coach, any retained assistant coach is as good as gone when the new one comes in.

I saw the tweet, but the guy may not be legit.  Maybe just wishful thinking.  I probably shouldn't have posted it.

No biggie, if and when it happens it will come out. That’s the world these days.

A good coach doesn't rely on "big names", but works with what he is given.  What happens when these "big names" go down with injuries?  The wheels of great teams don't fall off.

This.  Look at what Dante Scarnecchia does every year with NE.

I had wondered when Daboll was brought in, if he'd agreed to keep everyone for a year.  I thought the writing was on the wall when Ducasse became a healthy scratch.  Castillo brought him in and valued him highly, but he seemed very slow to adjust or react to defensive shifts.  I somewhat suspect that there may have been a bit of head-butting behind the scenes between Daboll and Castillo and finally Daboll said to McDermott, "look, release me if you want, but if you keep me, I need to bring in assistants I'm in sync with"

I'm fine with the firing of Castillo. It shows that McDermott is serious about fixing the offensive line.

That being said, I believe the Bills were a top 5 rushing team last season, and then they lost Eric Wood and Richie Incognito in the same offseason and did basically nothing to replace them. I'm not exactly sure what offensive line coach would be able to get quality production out of Jordan Mills and Russell Bodine, but whatever.

What's done is done. Like everyone else, I'm hoping Crossman is next.

Oh, and I also want to say that I find it encouraging that after each of the past two seasons, McDermott has fired a coach. It shows he's not too stubborn, complacent, or set in his ways to change when change is needed. That's a really good thing. Now he just needs to pick some superior replacements so that there aren't MORE firings after NEXT season!
