Former Seahawks Punter Jon Ryan to visit Bills on Tuesday

Schmidt does not crush the ball. His long all of last year was 60, and his long in preseason (short sample, but beautiful weather) is just 49. Cory Carter had a bigger leg.

I am not sure Ryan is getting the job, because Schmidt is consistent and does a nice job pinning teams inside the 20. But Ryan would not make a beeline here if he didn't have a chance.

Well, over the length of his career Ryan has been a top half of the league punter. Consistent. Schmidt has kicked in the swirling Buffalo wind for a few seasons now and may have a....leg up....in the competition.

If all evens out I have to think whoever handles Haush's balls best will get a crack to slip in.

Shirley you didn’t intend to write it this way.?

As others have pointed out, it's not just about distance. Dropping them inside the 20 is also important, but another key is placement. I haven't been watching Carter, but the punt he got injured on was a really nice one -- good distance, and pinned the returner near the sidelines. Schmidt isn't bad at that either, but it may be that they're looking for someone with the same leg but a bit more precision placement.

Jon Ryan is signing one day after being released. He’s not a camp leg, dude is going to be the starting punter opening day. Schmidt might as well start looking at the other 31 teams.

For sure Schmidt is just not good enough and you can bet Ryan received inside information the job was open.  This guy is not coming here as a camp leg at this point in his career

keeping 2 punters perhaps?  Good field position play.  Have Ryan kick the long balls, and Schmidt kick when we need to pin someone inside the 20.  Kind of insane to take 2 roster spots on punters, but if we are thinking we need field-position, this is an interesting route.

You can almost make a case for two place kickers (one for FGs and one kickoff specialist), but two punters? No.

nope.   didn't we have two kickers a few years ago.  Although that was Rex Ryan, I could see McD or someone thinking that with a young offense we need to pin the other teams deep back.   I wouldn't do it.  I think Ryan can handle that by himself.

the same argument for place kickers works for punters.  (if your into 2 kickers).  One kicks the long-ball, the other is the short punt specialist.

Schmidt is a good, Chris Mohr-esque hang-time punter who also quite often lands the ball within 5 yards of the sideline.  Those skills are underappreciated by fans, but a special teams coach can earn a living with a dependable coverage unit that takes advantage of them.

Colton is definitely in the top 32 in the world, so if the Bills keep Jon Ryan over him (and I think they will)...

... I'd also bet that Schmidtykicker gets claimed by another NFL club & punts for them this year.

This seems weird to me. Of all the potential problems on this team, punter didn't seem to be one to me. This late in camp you don't bring in a vet like Ryan if youre not seriously contemplating a change. I've been ok with Schmidt.

There is only one reason you make this signing:

Jon Ryan is a top 5-10 punter with a lot left in his leg.

Schmidt has been playing well and getting better, is a great teammate, and is signed cheap. The Bills obviously see an opportunity to get a top guy with Ryan. I have a feeling Schmidt is going to get cut.

Competition is well and good but John Ryan is going to be 38 years old.  His career average is about .6 yards better than Schmidt's.  Guess you need a camp body but I wouldn't view this as a serious competition.

And Adam Vinatieri is 45 and drilled a 57 yarder last night. Age doesn't really mean much when it comes to kickers. Schmidt has been too disappointing in big situations to not give more of a veteran a chance. Good move I think.

After reading all of your comments and educating me on Ryan - I way jumped the gun thinking he was just a leg being brought in.

Beane wastes no opportunity to upgrade.  Of course not saying he does win the job but the fact that he could is where Beane just continues to impress.
