Just taking a shot back at emo Tom. Just some sarcasm from a non Tom Petty fan.

Alright then, saves me from going off. Quite a relief, actually. I don't back off on this. (I haven't gone back to try to really understand it.)

wow, Amazon Prime may be the absolute best value ever in the history of mankind! Okay, that may be a bit of hyperbole, but still.

Free delivery on practically anything in the world you need, free music service, free video...and they will just continue to add to it. All for less than $9 month!!!!

Barbarian is cheap !

That was a shot at me?

Try again when you sober up. That was feeble.

Glorifying the drug addict genius and the unrealistic nature of the whole scam lost me after a while. I enjoyed it on some levels, but couldn't tolerate it on a much higher level.

I get that. Most TV or film is highly dependent on your particular preferences for suspending disbelief, and that's very subjective (I can't watch most war movies without getting seriously pissed off, for example.)

And it did get old after a while - I did say the first four seasons, and I feel it particularly fell off after that. I never watched the final season, and frankly it was a slog sitting through seasons six and seven.

A lot of good points here. I only went with hour long dramas with continuous storylines, but if I were to include 30 minute shows South Park would be near the top of the list.

Dexter didn't make my list despite season 1 & 2 rivaling any show I've seen. But the fall off, particularly in the last two seasons, took it off the list. Similarly, Sons of Anarchy had its moments, but the fall off as well as the extent to which it relied on "torture porn" kept it out of the top tier for me.

The Sopranos gets a lot of credit for blazing the trail, and it was a good show, but having watched the full series for the first time last year I didn't think it lived up to the hype.

I'm in agreement with this.

I watched the first 2 seasons of The Sopranos, and I stopped watching. The acting and writing was good, but to me the show wasn't going anywhere. So i just gave up.

The Sopranos debut in 1999. You watched it a generation later.

Truth. Sopranos did everything you said earlier in this thread, it ushered in the "golden age of television". Breaking Bad does not exist without the Sopranos. Hell, half the shows on most of the lists in this thread wouldn't exist without the Sopranos. It's mark on history is indelible in my opinion.

.

Feeble like your hip ? Or your weakness for Rice Pudding ?

What is this sober nonsense you're talking about ?

Remember than time your coworkers stole all your ideas and then they fired you ? That was less feeble.

Guess it gave you more time to sit at home and watch "House". Get bent Tom, I'm more sober than you'll ever be, but thanks for the cool stories.

Peaky Blinders might join the list if they can nail season 4 I think.

Late to the discussion but..

Seinfeld

Larry Sanders show, have to say HBO really knows how to cast, which is true for most of their shows.

Game of Thrones

Law and Order, do all female lawyers look like this?

Connections In the late 70's I used to say this was the best show I have ever seen on Television. It aired on PBS. It was what Discovery type channels were meant to be. If you are a technical person, you should definitiey watch this.

Price is Right, especially with bathing suit showcases.

We Got it Made, premise and plot unfolding was good stuff

Batman reruns with Julie Newmar as the villain

Three's Company

let me think of a 5th one for a young man with a day off school in the late 70s/early 80s

I loved Connections and IIRC there was a second series in the 90s

Hahaha...that is certainly my #1 'Would Ya?' show. I used to watch it all the time in the Angie Harmon/Carey Lowell/Jill Hennessy years. Edited by KD in CA

Three's Company was an amazing example of economy of writing. They got eight seasons out of five basic scripts.

After much consideration, here's my (fragmented) list...

I omitted shows from the historical category I haven't seen. For example, NYPD Blue would probably make the cut for its impact on broadcast dramas but I've never seen it so I didn't include it.

Historically/Objectively Great shows

Drama / Network:

* West Wing

* The X-Files

* Star Trek

* 24

* Freaks and Geeks

Cable:

* Sopranos

* The Wire

* Buffy the Vampire Slayer

* Breaking Bad

* The Shield

Network Comedy

* Seinfeld

* The Simpsons

* 30 Rock

* Cheers

* The Office

Cable Comedy

* Curb Your Enthusiasm

* The Larry Sanders Show

* VEEP

* Always Sunny in Philadelphia

* Louie

Personal Favorites (not named above)

Network Drama

* LOST

* Fringe

* Crazy Ex Girlfriend (it's an hour long so I jammed it here)

* The Wonder Years

* Twin Peaks

Cable Drama

* GOT

* Dexter

* Six Feet Under

* Luther

* Deadwood

Network Comedy

* Arrested Development

* Life in Pieces

* Everybody Loves Raymond

* The Good Place

* Frasier

Cable Comedy

* Party Down

* Eastbound and Down

* Silicon Valley

* Extras

* Broad City

never heard of the wire

True detective season one was fantastic, totally ruined season two, how did they screw up a good show ??

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I can't believe there is not one mention of The Walking Dead. I just couldn't get into the whole zombie thing but it seems popular.

If you don't have HBO, do yourself a favor and borrow or steal someone's HBO Go login and go watch The Wire. It might be a tad outdated with the pagers and old flip phones, but it doesn't matter. It's an incredible journey through various aspects of crime/police/politics/school in Baltimore with some of the best characters in television.

Tier 1

Seinfeld
The Wire
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (Unfortunately the consistency starts to drop in later seasons, but there are still fantastic episodes)
Tier 2
The Office
Parks and Rec
30 Rock
Archer
Arrested Development
Fargo
True Detective (Season 1)
Game of Thrones
The Simpsons (early seasons)

I thought last year's season (I haven't seen the most recent one) was excellent. Charlie invoking Bird Law was side-splitting.

The pagers were outdated even when the show was on air. That was part of the plot - Drug dealers being disciplined enough to still use pagers and pay phones.

And as for the flip phones, I actually just upgraded from my flip phone a few monyhs ago, so I resent that flip phone comment! lol j/k I know they're outdated. but I really did just upgrade cause my flip phone finally took a crap on me. It was going to be th same price to get a new flip phone as it was for a smart phone, so I finally got one, but I avoided those smart phones as long as I could...

Did you ever watch the HBO mini series "The Corner"? It's set in Baltimore and was written by one of the guys who helped with The Wire. Well worth watching. I think you can find it on YouTube.

I have thought about my list too much since posting it and have decided that I need to post my second list. There's too many good shows I didn't mention.

I'll consider it a top 10 in no particular order.

Master of None

Flaked

-those two only have one season currently out so things could change there

Chef's Table (including the France one)

Impractical Jokers

South Park

On the British show talk, I agree with row_33. I find it hard to understand what is being said a lot of the times. I find the premise of the shows that others have mentioned interesting but cannot understand enough of what is being said to get into the show. I'll keep trying to watch them though.

Chappelle's Show and Key and Peele deserve to be on the list too. OK, I'm done now. Maybe.

Game of Thrones

The Wire

The Sopranos

M*A*S*H*

Battlestar Galactica - the original (just kidding)

Honorable mentions:

Cheers

Fringe

Taxi

Maybe top 5 if they had fulfilled their mythology/arc: Lost, Firefly, X-Files

The Americans

Downton Abbey

Doesn't qualify as a show really, but it is close, and certainly is high enough quality to warrant an honorable mention: The Night Manager

I don't know if it's in my top 5, but I have been DVR-ing the hell out of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. It's on 2x a day M-F on the Decades channel that Comcast carries. I loved it as a kid, some of the jokes are very dated, but there's still a lot of laughs. :thumbsup:

I with they had a channel that replayed all of the Carol Burnett Show.
