Von has an out that only cost $15 million against the cap if cut him in 2025. I'd rather not touch that term with his status unknown for now.

Oh I didn't realize that

The basis for you even asking this question is that he was extended once before. The Bills need to stop kicking the can down the road on a 32 year old with a concussion history (no - it does not matter how long ago - whet does matter is his history of them).

The Bills, having now traded Bates, are likely to draft his eventual replacement and pay him the $11mil this season.

Well guess we were both right.  They didn't kic the can down, but didn't pay the $11 mil either.

Just checking around the internet, the general sentiment is that our window is now officially closed.

I agree w/ you.  Tre hardly played for us the last couple of years.  Hyde & Poyer were kind of starting to hurt us in terms of speed in the secondary.

If Beane nails the draft & we can stay kind of healthy (admittedly, 2 big "ifs), we might even be better heading into '24.

I think you can sign FA Safeties and get the same level of play for cheaper, if that's what he wants to do. I'd probably invest a 3rd rounder.

Tre isn't going to be Tre and that salary was ridiculous after the injuries. It's just like the Miller situation except with Tre we had an out. Gotta take it.

Harty? JAG, unfortunately. Can replace him with any number of guys off the street.

Neal? Special teams don't move the needle for me, and the special teams was bad anyways with Neal on the roster.

Morse is the only big name, especially considering we just traded Bates. The Bills are gonna get a lot younger and I think that's going to be to our benefit.

This is all great in theory, but until it’s done, it’s not done. Beane has until 4pm on March 13th to get his top 51 contracts under the 2024 cap. Even if he accomplishes that goal, he still needs to clear another 10-11 million to sign his draft picks and at least 20 mill more to complete his roster unless he chooses to just use draft picks and guys on futures/reserve deals as his depth next season.

By the time they sign the picks, the cap hit from the draft will only be about half that amount. For example, the top pick is slotted to make $2.46 mil, but will knock someone off the top 51 list making $900K, so the net addition will be $1.56 million, and the bottom half of the draft picks may not even count for the top 51.

I think there hasn’t been a move so far I was saying OUCH too.

morse would likely be the closest but planned for Life after Morse with McGovern. So I think I am even ok with that.

I do like the approach. No more running it back with aging talent kicking the can. Rip the bandaid off. Get cap compliant. Get younger and continue to work.

rather do it now with Josh’s timeline in his career than a year or two from now.

Keep it up Beane.

Would be a real shame if you double dog dared the league to suspend Von, thus allowing us to cut him at little cost. Would be terrible. 🤥

I will try to work more Mojo, but Beane really sapped my strength today

Not to mention Tres savings in June is the exact amount needed to sign the entire pool without even talking the top 51 rules.

I gave you the eyeball roll reaction but this post aged quite nicely for you, apparently Beane agrees with you! Props, I didn't see it coming. Maybe Beane was playing his cards close the vest or Morse wasn't willing to play ball with a restructure. Either way, with the news on McGovern moving to center and Edwards to LG (and of course the cap savings) I'm starting to see the light.

Like Mitch, but not $8.8 mil worth.  Beane is doing the right thing  and remaking this team with younger talent.

54(3):  Diggs, Shakir, Shorter

Camp/PS (3):  KJ Hamler, Isabella, Tyrell Shavers, Bryan Thompson

TE:

54(2): Kincaid, Knox

Camp/PS(2): Tre McKitty, Zach Davidson

T:

54(5) : Van Denmark, Brown, Anderson, Dawkins, Doyle

Camp/PS(1): Gouraige

G:

54(2):  Edwards, Torrance

C :

54(1): McGovern

DE:

54(2): Von, Rousseau

Camp/PS(1): Kinglsey Jonathan

DT:

54(1): Oliver

Camp/PS(2): Ankou, Cline

LB:

54(4): Milano, Bernard, Williams, Spector

CB:

54(4): Johnson, Douglas, Elam, Benford

Camp/PS(2): Brown, Ingram

S:

54(1): Damar Hamlin

Camp/PS(1):  Kendall Williamson

P:

54(1): Martin

Camp/PS(1): Haack

K:

54 (1):  Bass

LS:

54(1): Reid Ferguson

By my Count the Bills have 30 players they'll use on their 54 on the roster currently, and they need to get to 90 for camp.

Beane is gonna earn his salary this off season

Not to mention your Tre, Poyer, Hyde and Morse could all be sitting there still in May.

Overall 26 years old.

played center in college full time

logged 100 snaps at Center in the NFL

I have NO issue with McGovern at Center

As the Bills official site has already released a statement on the cuts, metjhinks that's all (!) for today...

https://www.buffalobills.com/news/buffalo-bills-release-five-players-including-jordan-poyer-mitch-morse-and-siran-neal

The Buffalo Bills announced the release of the following players Wednesday: safety Jordan Poyer, center Mitch Morse, defensive back Siran Neal, wide receiver Deonte Harty and running back Nyheim Hines.

It kind of feels like McD has some new found confidence in their ability to coach up and play rookies/inexperienced players.

All the defensive injuries lead to a bunch of players getting a baptism by fire and, for the most part, they filled in admirably. Maybe a small silver lining to last season.

Nice to see them go full 'reset' and pull off the band-aid.

Strange they didn't list White.  Maybe because he's a post June 1st cut and they can't yet?

Also let me say this now. If Bills can get what they want done this season without touching Diggs or Millers contracts. Those will be the two contracts Bills walk from next offseason.

Were getting younger and probably a year late on a few of these guys  I'm glad they are shaking things up  Find some new young players Don't see anything we cant possible at least match if not significantly upgrade

I looked ahead at the 2025 cap, and they don't list any dead money.  I'm going to assume they just haven't updated it yet.  Half of Tre's 10 mil should hit next year.

We are also 40 mil under next years cap.  Which, with these cuts, Josh locked in, and the cap going up again, isn't a bad place to be in.  Also, next year is the year they could move on from Diggs, Miller, and Knox if they wanted to.  It would only save them 15 mil total, but could be worth it

Agreed 100%.  I only wanted to see them restructure Oliver, Josh, Milano, and Dawkins.

The fact they didn’t go right to the restructure game. And instead the hard choices. Tells me that Beane saw this group is at its ceiling and time for a reset.

smart pulling off the bandaid the same year the team competing in your division has same cap issues.

Does anyone have any updated number for the cap and where we are at after all the moves made so far today?

Please and thank you. 🤘

Spotrac is keeping up pretty well.  It's -$16M with $10M added to the cap June 1st.

Yea, I can see the team being even better honestly:

Offense:

OL: You hope Edwards and McGovern settle into their new roles well, Torrance & Brown both should be getting better - it should be on of the better units in the league. Need to find some decent depth at guard and center

RB: Cook is fine as premier back, need to sign/draft some specialist behind him, and a developmental guy who can step in and take 15-20 carries just in case (he screams 4-5th round pick to me)

TE: need to find a pure blocking TE, and I'd entertain trades for Knox

WR:  Need to add a pair of deep threats, 1 in the draft and 1 in FA. The Bills actually are quite good/borderline elite when it comes to short and intermediate routes, and if they do add 2 legit deep threats the Offense is better than last seasons

Defense:

Here things are real dicey.

DT: You have Oliver, and you desperately need to resign Jones to start at 1T.  Beyond that you're likely looking at 3 more players who can be on the 54, and probably another 1T for the PS

DE: You have your 2 starts, and if Von is even semi back you're good with that. Would be great to re-sign AJE, but regardless you need 3 more dudes or so for thr 54 either through FA or Draft

LB: You can pretty much stand pat here, but you want to find some guys for the PS who can step up.  Think about an eventual replacement for Milano as well

CB:  You roll with the 3 you have now, and add another depth guy, while also finding someone who can back up Taron Johnson in the slot

Safety: This position is a mess

All in all you have real hope for the front 7, and especially love the potential of the LB room, if they can add some speed at safety that will help out the corners quite a bit.
