Mark92
Hey everyone, I am looking for opinions on outdoor security cameras. We live in a city neighborhood where the houses sit probably 20-30 ft from each other. We are having an issue with a neighbor coming on to our property and blowing his yard debris on to our property and actually blowing the debris under our bushes next to our house. He does all of this when we are not around. Another neighbor tells us it's him. So it's time for cameras. Any recommendations?
dorquemada
if it's that close, the Ring cameras work great. Put one of them outside with a FOV of your area of concern. You'll get realtime notification any time there's motion there. You can adjust the sensitivity if your cat sets it off too often 2
Bad Things
Why not just go next door and have a chat with your neighbour? If it's him, tell/ask him to knock it off.

I have 3 cameras at two houses and they're great. $10 for six months of storage... motion detection, notifications, etc.

I have several scattered around the back 40, and get some awesome wildlife shots. The downside here is that you have to either trunk them with cellular (like $25 a month) if you want to see whats going on in real time, or go periodically to them and pull the memory card to see. Close to the house though, Ring or something similar are better in that you get the real time alerts and cloud storage for a trivial monthly charge
BarleyNY
I grabbed a set of 4 Lorex cameras with a hub at Costco. They are battery operated and work on Wi-Fi. The hub hooks up to your router. I can use my phone to view them anytime. They are motion sensitive (adjustable sensitivity) and record when they detect any motion. They’re pretty darn good and cost only a few hundred bucks. Battery life is excellent and installing them was easy since they are wireless. Just a couple screws each. I’d highly recommend sometime that. Edit: My only gripe is that only one person at a time can be signed into the app for them. Only that person gets notifications. If someone else signs in, then the other person gets kicked off. Edited December 6, 2022 by BarleyNY
LeviF
Don't use wifi cameras unless you want some Romanian pornographer hacking into them and selling feeds of your house for $0.99/mo. Another consideration is that it's entirely possible police could get ahold of your footage without a warrant so if you kill your neighbor on camera they got you. BringMetheHeadofLeonLett
I'm not a fan of a security camera society, so I won't get one personally, BUT when we were having an issue with some kind of rodent trying to claw its way into our house, above the front porch, I got a couple sonic rodent things. One is plugged into the porch outlet, and has a blue ring light that looks identical to one of the cameras. Chick's happy we got some camera looking device out front, and the rodent went away. Whether you go with the camera or not, a well-positioned sprinkler setup and a remote control can provide hours of entertainment.
Jauronimo
Ring works great. I have Ring with a solar cell so there is no need to recharge batteries or connect directly to an outlet. The only issue is sensitivity and range. Depending on how big your yard is the camera might not trigger when he moves on to your yard or it might go off every time the wind blows. When my son was about 9 or 10, he was walking our dog and she peed on a guy's lawn. The guy ripped my son a new a-hole and called him stupid. When my son came home and told me, I said, "let's go talk to this guy." So we went to the guy's house; I rang the doorbell and he answered the door and immediately starts raising his voice at me. Told me my son was stupid and asked me if he even went to school. He was an older guy ... 70s. I was still close to punching him in the face, but I didn't. He kept saying how much money he spent to make his lawn look good. So before I left, I told him that my dog would be pissing on his lawn EVERY SINGLE DAY from that day forward. I would seriously make my dog hold it in until we got to his lawn when I walked her at night. Until the day she died (years later) I made sure she pissed on his lawn every day she could. I know the guy doesn't live there anymore. Not sure if he's dead and I couldn't care less. 1

Einstein
I'm big into security camera's. - Have NEST cameras on one home. They were great when they first came out, but then they were bought by Google and it all went to crap. The tech is way behind now and overpriced. My 1080p nests are fairly grainy, can't read a license plate, have just "okay" night time vision, and the market have evolved past them. It has no local storage, so you have to pay Google a monthly fee to store the video footage. - On another home I have Eufy cams. WOW, these are night and day vs the NEST cams as far as picture quality. These are SHARP. They're marketed as 2k and I believe it, because I can zoom in and read license plates, see peoples faces clear as day, read letting on shirts, etc. The eufy camera also stores the video locally (on the camera), so you don't have to pay cloud service. The downside to both of these cameras are WiFi jammers. Criminals are now starting to bring WiFi jammers when the steal cars, etc. They jam the WiFi signal, so the camera doesnt transmit data, and then you have no footage. - I'm now looking at ReoLink cameras and ive heard rave reviews about them. They are wired, so not WiFi and jammers dont effect them. They have local storage, 2k video, and even some deterrence features (bright light at night shines on the person it sees). Literally disable it and walk right in the house. If you buy a RF jammer (which a lot of criminals are doing), you can REALLY eff the system.
