From a standpoint of accurately describing what was happening, I always thought he was right at the top. And for those who are annoyed by his exuberance on TV, check him out doing a game on radio. He is far and away the best radio play by play guy out there.
row_33
Best: Curt Gowdy was the best play by play for me in any sport Merlin Olsen as color for the NFL Harry Kalas for baseball, there isn't even second place Worst: Enberg Diefdorf for color, it was a great time when he told us 8 times in about 15 minutes that a playoff game cannot end in a tie, what would we have done that night without that wisdom?

Lundquist also for golf. Never been a fan of any Alberts or Gumbels.
EasternOHBillsFan
Gus Johnson and Tony Romo would be the best duo IMHO... Many of you may not like Romo, but the guy is an outstanding talent as color commentator. He details things that no other person discusses and he's usually spot on. Sig1Hunter
I know this thread is about play by play announcers, but a color guy that can talk about wearing a Dirty Sanchez on the air with a straight face is top 5 all time. Adam Archuleta FTW. Spero is actually pretty decent, too.

Gordio
For the guys who mentioned Gus Johnson, to me he belongs on CBS doing March Madness. It was a sad day for college basketball when he left to go to Fox. I like Kevin Harlan & I like Tesitorre. Musberger & Jackson were also good. I don't get why you guys complain announcers not making intelligent points & such. I like guys that get excited & try to bring the emotion of the arena/stadium into your living room. A guy like Pat Summerral was so boring. I will never forget NCAA Tournament BYU/Florida when Fredette was playing for the Cougars. Cougars tied the game with about 20 seconds left on a Jimmer 3 & Johnson screams to len Elmore "if your BYU do you foul" Elmore screams "Gus it is a tie game for Christ Sakes" Not one of Gus' finer moments but no one brought the Madness like Gus Johnson. He seems out of place at Fox. Edited December 5, 2019 by Gordio

Here's my list: 1. Al Michaels 2. Jim Nantz 3. Gus Johnson 4. Kevin Harlin 5. Mike Trico 6. Joe Buck 7. Marv Albert 8. Dan Hicks 9. Greg Gumbel 10. Chris Myers Where's Murph on this list ???? I’d look terrible. But I highly doubt Tessatore and Booger are back next year. They are the worst listen in all of sports (any sport). No idea why they don’t have Steve Young doing the color commentary for those games. He is at the stadiums for the pre, half, and post game shows. He’s well spoken and explains the game well. Not sure who ESPN could bring in to do play by play. Honestly Mike Breen might be a good option (although he does mostly NBA for them). Mike Breen is AWFUL! So punchable. "Puts it in!" Personally, I think he is pretty solid...and I am not sure I have ever heard him talk about the Bills enough (at least in the last 20 years) to gauge that he "hates" them. If he just pointed out that they weren't very good, chances are, he was right, in this century. I really think the only announcer I have ever heard who had a bias against the Bills (and he admitted it later) was Steve Tasker, in his stint as a color commentator.
