QB position locked for 5 years.  next issue.   trust the process.  it is working

I pray the Bills don’t think like this.  It should be evaluated after every season.  I actually liked Barkley coming out but we literally say the best game of his entire career and that RAISED his qb rating to 68.3!  It’s backup qb so you can’t be super upset either way.

but if NE can draft qbs when they have Tom Brady, we can draft qbs when we have Allen and Barkley.  You should never stop trying to improve the most important position.  It’s why the Bills have sucked for years.

What backup QB would win more games?

That win bumped his record up to 2-5.

and I’m completely biased but I think EJ is better than Barkley (and every stat and physical trait proved that).  But that would probably just create a qb controversy and we can’t have Allen deal with that pressure ?. (I’m kidding and know there is no way to bring EJ back here. But it’s joke he doesn’t have a job somewhere and Peterman does).

At this stage of his career I'm not sure - and on a per dollar basis even less so?

Fitz had a 96 QBs rating this year. Barkley has 68 for his career.  Fitz is far superior to bArkley and it’s not close.  But he probably wasn’t an option.

I agree with you on this.  Beane needs to bring another FA or Rookie good enough to compete with Barkley.

Did I miss the part of this MONSTROUS 2-year extension announcement in which the Bills said (or even implied) they are through addressing the QB situation into the future?  And further, is there evidence during McD and Beane's massive 2-year run that suggests they don't plan on continuing to evaluate the QB situation going forward?  I mean, they only drafted one in both drafts and have had about six or seven through the program.  Sounds to me like you really have something to worry about here!

Josh has been making progress and getting better each week. Maybe that would have been a natural progression on its own, maybe its the coaching, maybe its the QB room and mentorship of DA and Barkley. Most likely it is all of the above. But the key is, it is working. So why break that Up. I think DA gets another 1 year contract for next year and you keep the QB room in tact for one more season. Then when Josh is going into year three, you can bring in the prospect QB (maybe just on the practice squad) and let DA retire, keeping Matt as primary backup and sounding board.

Matt played a hell of a game vs. the Jets. Yes, it was only one game, but what makes it more important than his other 6 starts in the league (2 years ago for CHI) is that it was with our coaches and players, plus two years have passed since those 6 starts. Just as Josh made a leap from having some starts and then sitting for a while before coming back, maybe Matt has gotten better in those two years as well. People usually at least get marginally better with more experience.

Plus it's not like they will ask him to go out and play like Josh if he has to go in. They won't ask him to do things he can't do. Just like every other team who is starting a backup, you simplify the game plan, you rely on your defense and RBs, and don't ask them to do too much. I feel pretty good about Matt being able to manage a game and hold the fort down for a couple of games when called upon.

Very happy with the signing. Congrats Matt!

Let’s not act like Belichick has made a serious effort to improve the position. He has drafted 3 QBs in the fourth round or above in the last 18 years. 2 in the 7th round. They draft QBs mostly to have a cheap guy as a backup and because they can fleece teams by making Matt Cassel look good.

They need to keep looking and evaluating of course.

 But bringing another in?
should they bring another in to challenge Allen ?
when do you draw the line ?
But yes , keeps eye wide open.
Who you bring in ? That is another story.

Huh? I think you are overdriven homer mood.  I said I was fine with and responded to someone saying we are set for 5 years.  Settle down ? :)

Seriously, do you think JA is not the absolute starter next year?

Need 3 QBs for next year.  I'm hoping they get an older vet for 1 year.

Maybe one shakes out from another team being Anderson is probably hanging them up.

Fitz certainly has more experience.  But I don't think either QB can start and win the majority of his games.

They wouldn’t be backups if they were capable of playing at a level where they won majority of their games..

When you think about it......if Fitz didn't have "history" with the Bills he would be the exact type of mentor you would want for JA.

Fitz had the brains he just didn't have the arm.

...and in Year 14, his "magic hat" has gaping holes......when do we reach a point to seriously get over him as far as returning to Bflo?....after his absurd OBD mega deal, Brandon offered him back up money and he balked..."I'll find starter money somewhere"...to his credit, he has done well financially....just purely asinine to compare a 14 year guy who has 126 starts to the Barkely kid with 6 years and 7 starts....seriously?........

A slight difference between having possibly the best QBs of all time and having 2 QBs with QBs rating in the 60s.  The main point is we shouldn’t stop locking. Doesn’t mean it has to be a 1st but they need to keep bringing in talent.

if Allen turns out to be guy, that’s great and we have possible trade chips.  But if Allen turns out like JP and we pass on Rodgers, I’m going to riot!

No real reason to settle for Matt Barkley.

There have never been more physically gifted QB's in the NFL than right now and having such a limited one behind Allen isn't ideal.

Hopefully they remain aggressive wrt QB depth.

Hopefully Matt Barkley is to Josh Allen as Frank Reich was to Jim Kelly. We shall see.

Congrats to Mr. Barkley. Just watching that dismantling of the Jets made the season for me, as I am surrounded by Jets, Giants and Patsy fans!

Excellent move ! Start locking up these key guys (yes, the backup is a key player).

I think McBeane understand that better now. And a vet presence or two for a rookie/ 2nd year QB.

Barkley and DA are good for this.

Im all for them taking flyers later in the draft.  It's just that your post made it feel like Belichick was drafting QBs every season and that's just not so.

Because Bills fans aren’t allowed to want more.  We should just be happy with a team.

But they traded up in the 2nd to take Jimmy G when the best qb was ever in his prime.

Im fine with taking a qb every year.  If Allen doesn’t progress as a passer next year, I want a qb in the first the following year.  Never settle.

There are a lot of people who don't understand the sarcasm of it because they haven't been here as long as the rest of us. It used to be quite the common statement when Buddy Nix was running things around here.

...true and then they let him walk, as well as Jacoby, settling on all of the eggs in the 41 year old Brady Basket with Hoyer as his back up.....something just isn't passing the smell test as far as their forward look and succession plan, which is fine by me....maybe there is some truth to internal strife and disagreement, again fine by me.....

They didn't trade up.  He was selected 3rd last in round 2.  Brady was 37 years old and maybe for Brady that might be HIS prime, but most QBs are on the decline by then.  They probably anticipated his decline and or retirement and liked the kid so drafted him as a replacement.  Again, lets not act like the Pats do this every year.  They draft QBs mostly for low dollar backups.  Some of them end up getting traded to dumb teams and then they draft another low dollar backup.

I have no problem with the Bills drafting more QBs, but lets not act like the Pats do this every year or act like they do it primarily looking to upgrade.

You’re right. I thought they traded up for him. I’m so stupid!!! ?

but my larger point is the team that has the greatest qb ever still doesn’t settle.  They took cokehead Mallett, Hoyer, Jacoby, Jimmy G.  I think that might be more qbs than he Bills have drafted in the same time.

But yeah, I want note options than Allen (hopefully the franchise) and Matt Barkley (dime a dozen backup).

They drafted Jimmy G that high because they didn't think Brady would still be there in 4 years.
