Tell a story of when being a Bills fan came in handy in real life

Attitudes haven't been the greatest around here and understandable.  Been a frustrating season.  So maybe this story can break it up somewhat.

Was only working part-time several years ago and was looking for full time work.  Had an interview set up with this building's executive director.  So went on the interview and for the first few minutes of it were the standard generic questions, Why do you want to work here? What can you bring to the table? etc...

I noticed he had a Bengals helmet in his office.  So he talked a little about his professional career than I told him I was a Bills fan.  All of a sudden we hit it off.  Oh geez he told me you guys are on the same boat as us!  Then we talked about the Stevie Johnson game in Cincinnati the year before with The Why So Serious shirt.  Then it came up that Fitz was on his fantasy team.  Then we even argued a little what team it was tougher to be a fan of.  Ultimately the interview broke up but he pated me on the back and said well be in touch buddy.  So an hour later at home I got the called I was hired.

For better or worse been with the company since.

Back in the day I knocked a guy out in Virginia for following and harassing me. Several cops pulled up, so I was escorted into a cop car. The officer said to me “wow you have one helluva punch, where are you from?”. I said I was from Buffalo, he says “ hey I’m from Rochester, how about them Bills”. We talked and laugh for a bit, reports came back our stories matched, so I was free to go. The Bills went on to lose to Dallas, the last time the Bills sniffed the SB.

If you consider being numb handy in life then sure, the Bills certainly helped me along.

...as we get older, certain "things" do go numb.......and I'm beginning to think after 56 years of following this club, I have something else to add to the list..................

I worked in a restaurant in the 70's that closed off a section of the restaurant on Monday eve. to serve the Bills exclusively, no wives or girlfriends.

Usually around 15- 25 would show up. Few waitresses wanted to work it because some players would be crude and obnoxious.

I was a barboy/busboy, but served/waited occasionally. Asked me if I would work it. I did, took the abuse, always got at least $100 in tips for 2-3 hours work.

In early 90s, me and some friends went to watch Bills in Indy. We decided to go to St Elmo's for dinner. Useless to say the line wrapped around the door. Just so happened that we arrived the same time as some Bills players. They saw some of our apparel and thought we were with them. We went through the VIP line with them. Once inside people bought us wine and told us to take it easy on their team. We should have won Oscars

I got a hooked up chicken parm sub at the county fair here in central FL on Wednesday for wearing my Bills hat...A younger guy asked what I wanted and after I answered, an older guy behind him said "anything for a Bills fan", to which I replied "how about a title". He followed with "how about a quarterback".

The guy brought up the fact that he used to work annual fairs in Fredonia, and how Jimbo and the gang would frequent there. Not sure if/how true, but he knew enough as a non-Bills fan to seem credible. (I assume there is or was a fair there during training camp).

Anyhow, in relation to the thread title, a hooked up chicken parm is about as good as it gets....

Ha I couldn't think of anything, but this story did remind me of one time.  One year at the NC State Fair at the Dave's "I Got It Booth" we went to cash in our win coupons for valuable prizes, and they saw my Bills shirt and said "Bills fan!  Let me see what we have in the back!" and brought out all Bills related merchandise they had (not sure if they had just done a fair in NY or something).  Turns out Dave himself is from WNY.  Every year since then, at this point as a joke, I go up and ask if there's any Bills stuff in the back.

In 1990 during Desert Shield, I was at a customs station on the border of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait that had a small store with cold drinks. I walked in and had a Bills decal of my day pack, 1990 was a great season and I tried to follow as much as possible. The owner of the store, a Saudi citizen seen the decal and immediately engaged me in football talk. He had attended University of Buffalo in the 1980's and loved the Bills and the city; he knew potholes, mighty taco commercials and the two of us talked for about an hour. During early December I returned and he was there and also following the Bills, believe they were getting ready for the rematch in Buffalo, pretty big game. Before I left he gave me a package with two bottles of rum for the coming holidays; Saudi Arabia strictly enforces law prohibiting alcohol consumption, possession, sales all be jail or flogging. I returned back to my camp with an awesome, morale boosting holiday present, courtesy of a fellow Bills fan! Despite the US military ban on consumption, we kind of enjoyed some Christmas and New Years cheer in a low key manner!

I talked  about the Bills in an interview with a bills fan and got the job, but I would have gotten the job anyway do to my training and their need for a worker, so it didn't really help.

I went into a bar with some friends a couple of years ago to watch the Bills game and was wearing a Bills hat.  Our waitress was from western NY and was also a fan.  She bought me a bottle of Labatts.  Not too bad since there are mostly Redskin fans where I live.

I was blessed to meet so many great people at the home opener this year. People I truly value in my life. This is largely due to the greatness that is @plenzmd1. Unfortunately, after those few great people, there were the rest of you. Life is a series of trade offs.....

It's kind of the anti-handy here.  True story though

So I'm at a parents party for my kid's school back in 2015

One of my kid's good friends has the last name "Pace" as in "son of Orlando"

So I'm chatting the dad up at the party and I mention I'm a Bills fan and he starts telling me all the great stuff Rex is gonna do and I'm telling him "well, I'm a skeptic, but that all sounds better than good".  He won me over.  I left that party fully Bill-ieving in Ol' Sexy Rexy.  I mean, it's Orlando Pace, man, he's forgotten more football than I'll ever know x200.

Last time I ever had the chance to talk to the guy, after the 2015 season he'd glimpse me and take off to the opposite side of the room.  Warp speed after 2016.  True story.

His wife though.  Little tid-bit of a lady.  Engineer, six sigma black belt.  Pretty clear who's ruling that roost.  i think she's lovely, I'm guessing 7/10 posters here go 'he could do better with his $$$'.   Nah.   More power to him, I say, he's a happy guy with a happy family and great kids.  No Delicia 4 Pace, married a woman with brains and character.

The head of sales at my company is married to a woman from Rochester and he spends quite a bit of time there. The first time I met him it came up and we talked for about 15 minutes. Professionally, there seems to be something unique and memorable to others about being a Bills fan/from Buffalo. A lot of folks at various companies have called me "Buffalo", but I've never seen it happen with someone from Chicago, San Francisco, or Des Moines. Not sure what it is, but I'll take it.
