Panthers release Baker Mayfield

SCBills

Recommended Posts

There were red flags with this guy, big ego usually does not translate well for athletes. It is quite amazing that out of the 5 quarterbacks' taken in the first round, Allen, who I did not want at the time, turned out to be the winning lottery ticket. It did not take long to be on board with Allen, his attitude and work ethnic resonated with me personally. Looking at this makes one feel exceptionally lucky and grateful for the intuition of the Bills front office and coaching staff. We were waaaay overdue to get one right!

You can't.  Even though he has flamed out you've got to kick the tires on Mayfield.  You need a guy who has played in big games, even if it's just to manage the game behind that defense.

Mayfield is not a game manager.  He needed to be stripped down and rebuilt by Alex Van Pelt but he kept reverting to previous form.

Sure he's not a rapist like the guy the Browns replaced him with, but this latest separation proves that Mayfield has serious issues and why his career in this league is going to very short lived, even more so than expected.

I think it’s more that he just isn’t that good. Even if he is annoying in the lockerroom, that stuff gets overlooked if you can play.

Just to let Ryan go, out of respect for him and knowing nobody else is going to claim him and he's gone in 5 games anyway.

the idea would be to get Ryan to SF

It is an interesting thought.  The question is is guaranteed money for next year.

I believe the Colts guaranteed 10-12 million of his 2023 Salary upon acquiring him - so I can see getting rid of Ryan, but it is not cheap and he is under a huge contract number for next year that I am not sure a team like the 49ers want.

Therefore he would have to pass through waivers and then the Colts are forced to payout the contract.  Plus Mayfield is not under contract for next year - so you are cutting and paying one guy to pick up a 5 game QB that will not be back?

Seems to risky - keep Ryan and try to trade him in the off season to get rid of the salary.

Sign Mayfield if they want - just to get him in the building.

Don't you feel sweet redemption for your boy Geno? I always thought he had it in him. But man you were right on him

Yes! Some guys just need time to develop. Some guys that's a full decade. 🤣

Maybe a team who needs a vet QB, like the Jets, can get on the phone and trade a couple of 1sts for him!

San Fran would be a solid landing spot for him, but there are likely other teams on the waiver wire ahead of them who may take a swing.

Wonder if Seattle will claim him

Agree, could see Seattle doing it just to make sure he doesn't go to SF.

I've often wondered if Allen had been selected already, who would the Bills have taken instead?  Likely either Mayfield or Darnold would have still been available at #7 then.

Correct. Hence why now we're hearing the Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray noise.

Coincidence that it's only coming out now that they're losing? I think not.

Terrifying to even think about it.

😂  Hue's record was 1-31 his first two years, 2-5-1 when he was fired (mid-point) and you blame Baker?😂

Hue's record was 1-31 because the Browns wanted it that way.

And yes ... I absolutely blame Mayfield for Hue being fired when he was fired.

The contract voids when he's released.  I don't *think* the Panthers have any salary guarantees to cover.

I believe the contract voids if he clears Waivers - if the 49ers (or any team) claim him - I believe they assume the contract he is currently playing on.

Therefore - it would clear the remaining salary from the Panthers and the 49ers would assume their portion of the contract.

If he clears waivers - the Panthers are responsible for his contract minus any offsets in the new contract he signs.  That would all depend upon how the contract is structured.

Here's something that might be interesting...

Colts claim him and waive Matt Ryan, who ends up in SF reunited with Shanahan

Reuniting & Re-incarnation are not the same thing.

Ryan is done.

I live in Cleveland.  Hue Jackson was a pathetic joke of a head coach long before Mayfield even arrived.  You could be Hue's best friend in the entire world because he totally enjoys warping reality to deflect blame just like you.

If someone picks him up off waivers, they are on the hook for $1.3M remaining for this year. That's it.

After seeing this Josh Johnson signing, I'm going to speculate that the Baker rumors about his attitude is probably true.

I was sure the 49'ers were going to put in a claim for him.

The one I think will claim him is Denver.  Depending on how much power Elway still has, he was in love with him during the draft process....  Baker and Wilsons egos on the same team would be must watch TV LOL.

If there's one thing Elway does well, it's evaluate QB talent!

Elway has no official job with the team but if he did that, I would love it.

I constantly remind Bronco fans that Elway passed on Josh Allen because he had Case Keenum as QB.

Bronco fans are on the ledge, and this just might make them jump!

Even worse. Now remind them the guy that Elway selected over Josh Allen plays in Miami now. LOL

How long does it take to clear waivers typically?  How much time does each team have to decide whether or not to claim any given player?  Minutes, hours?

24 hours

correct - the Panthers portion of the contract.

By cutting him the contract does not void though.

If he clears waivers and is then signed - the Panthers would be responsible for the remaining contract minus any off sets.

It is a bigger deal for the guys speculating that Indy will grab Mayfield and then cut Ryan to get to SF as Ryan has a larger contract to bear including money next year.

It doesnt really go in order. Like Houston doesnt have to say "no" before they ask the 2nd team. There is a waiver window where anyone/everyone can put in a claim, and then at the end of that window, he goes to the lowest team that said "yes". They all have the same 24 hours.

They still could - the Josh Johnson pick-up was started prior to the Mayfield report.

The 2 do not necessarily have anything to do with each other.

The 49ers needed someone immediately with knowledge of the system- hence Johnson.  Mayfield might be a multi week look in case Purdy struggles.

I'll be shocked if Seattle doesn't put in a claim.

Elway retired from official capacities and is now a consultant and I think Broncos will use him but if they used him on decision of signing Russell Wilson and he thought it was a good idea they may not.

Elway's biggest mistakes ... taking Chubb instead of Allen and signing Wilson. Grounds for dismissal ...

Elway did not sign Wilson.

Thanks for the info!   I had no idea it worked like that.   Thought it was like the draft so to speak.
