flashback 2018 espn draft coverage of Josh pick

First Round Bust

He really has.

And I will not take this opportunity to, once again, post the link of Mina Kimes screeching about our poor decision in her draft coverage. As I am a mature adult and satisfied with the knowledge that we've won the 2018 draft. I no longer need to rub it in. I wish her the best of luck and hope she's

I wish someone video'd my reaction as I nearly lost it when they picked Josh ( I wanted Rosen). Would've been a good laugh now

I really believe if he was drafted anywhere else not NYJ he probably is a serviceable starter. He got the crap beat in and you can see it now where he is unsure of making a throw because of protection and past "ghosts'. Not saying he is a star but the Jets did everything wrong for Sam. The Browns at least tried to do the same as the Bills:

-Give QB a solid line

-Give him good WRs

-Coaching that tries to utilize the QB's best talents

-Defense that is solid enough to shoulder the load as the QB grows

The Jets just tried to rush to be a contender year 2 which mixed with Gase was a disaster. I still couldn't believe they didn't try to sign Morse or Paradis to help Sam.

I think I didn't quite have the same optimism for Sam, but I think his time in Carolina has shown he is what he is at this point. I think it would take a Sean Peyton to maybe resurrect his career and that's if it's even possible

Thanks for this. Always fun to re-read this thread.

@GunnerBill How much heat have you taken for your comment?

Haha, plenty. And all of it deserved.

I did after the 2020 season go back and watch his Wyoming games again. I still wouldn't draft him in the 1st on the basis of them 😀. Luckily enough the Bills looked more at what he could be than what he was.

too bad my favourite part of that day is not in that video or available to be seen elsewhere.

it was the phonecall right before the pick, from Beane to Allen:

Beane "You ready to be a Bill?"

Allen "Yes, sir."

it was short and sweet but somehow from that moment on i knew that Allen was their guy all along and that he was going to be special.

I still wonder if Mayfield or Darnold were on the board if Beane would have made the same deal to move up and get them or draft them at our original spot.

There are rumors that there was one other guy the Bills would have taken aside from Allen, or even over Allen if both were available.

Either way Allen remains one of the biggest outliers in recent history, maybe all time in terms of QB evaluation.

You know next to nothing about the Bills' process.

Correction:  you know nothing about the Bills' process.

Allen was always their guy.  Who plays QB for your team?

There’s a small moment in that video that says everything you need to know about Josh Allen. In the biggest moment of his young career, seconds after being selected, he pointedly breaks off an embrace with Goodell to go shake hands with the Bills fan on stage.

Lots of players shake hands with fans, but it was the way he moved Goodell aside and made a point of greeting this fan that sticks with me. It’s just 2-3 seconds in a whirlwind, but it shows Josh knew, even then, how important the fans are to this game…and how important he would become to them.

Agreed..I had the same feeling on that day when I was watching the live broadcast...It was such a great moment for him to not forget the fan. It meant a lot to him.

Somebody went on and on about "you can't teach accuracy".  I swear it was Aikman and all I could think was he was a UCLA Homer and wanted Rosen to be picked.

It was Aikman on the Fox/NFL broadcast.

I absolutely hated this pick, I wanted Rosen. When they called the pick "the Bills select Josh......." my face was 😃, but then Allen came out of his mouth and it was 😒🙄🤮, I sat there for about a half hour with a disgusted look on my face shaking my head. All I can say is.... it's a good thing I'm not the GM. I gladly eat crow and have multiple Josh Allen jerseys, couldn't be happier with the pick now.

It was Aikman. When the Bills were on the clock he was openly campaigning for Rosen. I get the impression an executive got to him and told him to chill, because he eased back a little bit when then Bills took Allen over Rosen. Said he understood why the Bills did it because (in a snooty tone) "Allen was a good fit for Buffalo".

Wonder how Aikman feels about his boy Rosen now ?

Too loose with the football, and not a big enough playmaker to be that loose.  Too inconsistent on the easy stuff, inconsistent footwork, and not a top tier arm.  He can make some great plays from time to time, but he doesn't have the athleticism or arm strength to do it consistently enough at this level.

Surround him with some top end talent and I think he'd do just fine - he's never really had that.  He had CMC - he got hurt.  Moore and Anderson are solid, but the line injuries pretty much got him beat up this season.  The jets never really could put anything of note together for him.  Maybe 3rd time is a charm... but usually the 3rd team is when you're no longer the guy.

I remember telling my buddies at the bar that it needed to be Allen.  I always liked his fire and competitiveness - i also remember watching a Wyoming game that year and he made a throw on a speed out that was an absolute dime.  LJ my concerns were the football IQ and arm strength, but i also thought if you just built the offense around this guy in a certain way you might have something.  Rosen... just seemed like a smug jerk - I didn't want Jay Cutler's attitude with Matt Leinarts arm.

I haven't revisited this thread since 2018.

Thank you for the trip down Memory Lane or what I like to call "Amnesia Lane".

I wonder how many posters changed their names since then?

Anyone still worried about the 2 2nd round picks the Bills wasted?

Josh Allen was suspected of being anything from a "white supremist" to a "Jesus freak"!  LOL.

I'll LAMP here and say my only comment concerning the pick was that the Bills need to get Jordan Palmer to keep working with Josh.

The first day of the 2018 draft turned out to be my best day as a Bills fan and that goes back longer than I want to think about.

At least he was confident in his ability.

One thing I will say about Rosen though is there were circumstances to start his career that simply were not fair (i.e. being taken in the top 10 in 2018 only for a new regime to draft Murray #1 overall the very next year).

I think at this point though there's a distinct reason he's bounced around so much to start his career and who knows if he will even last as a backup much longer.

I don't watch college football but before that draft I watched highlights of all 5qbs of that draft and I desperately wanted Allen only. He effortlessly threw for 50-60 yards, 40yards on the run. And I have been sick for years of Bills QB like Edwards, Fitz and so on who couldn't pass for 20 yards. 3rd & 8 meant usually end of drive. Now it's a warm up for Josh.  I wanted such type of QB with canon arm, although Aikman spoke about accuracy and it was a concern as Aikman looked like QB expert.

Draft was at deep night Moscow time. I fell asleep when Bills were low on draft board before 2 trades up, so I hadn't much hope. When I woke up next day and found out Bills have drafted Allen I was happy. It was 1st time ever Bills drafted #1 prospect of my wish list.

really kind of boggles my mind so many people missed on Josh.  Seems like nfl scouts really overrate guys from all those big schools with great recruiting that have a near nfl roster of talent.  Id rather have the guy with the physical skills that had to face teams like ohio state with absolute scrubs on his team for a couple years.

The best quote from Gunner on his initial thread.

"I would love to be here in 5 years time with Allen having a huge new contract and me having "I did not believe in Josh Allen" on my signature. I don't think it will happen, but I genuinely hope it does.   "

I loved the pick and was hoping it would be Allen.  I figured nothing worked for the team before that so just go big and take the risk on him, even though he had a less than stellar college career. I knew if he panned out, he would be amazing and that has been proven true. I believe Josh was born to play for Buffalo. There isn’t another QB who better fits his team/ city than him.  Sometimes you just have to wait for good things to happen.

I remember seeing Allen for the first time in the Infamous college game against Iowa st where he threw five interceptions, hearing that he was a first round prospect and thinking "great watch the Bills be the team dumb enough to pick him".

I had a more open mind at the time of my post that was referenced a couple posts back but remember thinking that he would need a couple years on the bench to have a chance at being good.    I also thought that Sam Darnold was the most complete QB before than draft so it tells how much I know.

I am glad to be wrong on Allen, but I think that he has exceeded almost everyone's expectations by now.   The only question will be whether him or Jim Kelly will be seen as the best Bills QB of all time when Allen's career is done.

And if we still had signatures I would have. I hated the pick but I said in that thread the next day I would give him, like any other Bills player, a fair crack at it and I have only ever assessed Josh since by what he did on the field. I didn't bang on about my draft evaluation of him for 3 years.

I am with you on that.. I also wanted the other Josh.  But the moment I saw Josh come to the podium, it felt the kid had something to prove (especially what happened on the day before the draft).   The leak actually may have helped the Bills for Allen to slide down to 7.  Go Bills
