Artem Lipatov
I still can't forget how dominant Bills defence under Schwartz was! When Marrone opted to quit I was sure Schwarz will be offered HC job. When Pegula invited Wrex I told from the 1st day it's a huge huge mistake. Don't fix what is not broken. Stupid loudmouth Rex ruined top defence. We needed offensive mind. Frank Reich was also in discussion. Finally OC Reich and DC Schwarz won SB in Philly. I have a big respect for both. Just thought again watching Schwarz yesterday on opponent's side.

Hiring Rex was a horrible mistake... and most of us knew it immediately ...but hiring Schwartz as HC would have probably been equally bad. There's a reason he hasn't found another head coaching job despite his success as a DC. Does that remind you of anyone?

Jauronimo
Pretty sure we'd be right where we are right now after firing Schwartz 2 years later. Schwartz's dominant Defenses always got shredded by the Pats.

Golden*Wheels
I'd have been ok with it at the time. I think he'd have been a better HC the second time around. Plus...no Rex. So we'd have had that going for us.
prissythecat
I don't see that Schwartz is necessarily good HC material. He is obviously a very competent DC. But if you remember his days in Detroit as a HC, he had some talented teams that underperformed in part due to a glaring lack of discipline. If a HC can't maintain something as basic as that, I don't want him

K-9
He would have been let go after the ‘16 season and Whaley would have followed after the draft, anyway.
auburnbillsbacker
They defense would have been better and the offense would have likely been worse. The Bills had a top 10 offense Rex's first year with Roman leading the way. The Bills likely end up with a similar record.

Talley56
Not sure if he would have been a good coach but I would have loved to have hired someone who would have allowed him to continue to run the D his way. As for being a HC, his record with Detroit was 29-52 but Belichick's record with Cleveland was 36-44. Better, but not by a whole lot. When you take into consideration that Schwartz took a team from 0-16 to the playoffs in 3 years, I'd say not as bad a HC tenure as most make it out to be.

That's often the problem in itself in that the X's and O's are the fun part so even when made HC you still try to become too involved with that part of job. Bangarang
Hue Jackson would have been our OC. He would have resurrected EJ’s career and we’d still be drunk from all the SB parades.

SlimShady'sSpaceForce
If I had a million dollars,I'd be rich. There is no "we" in the Buffalo Bills What if the Bills drafted Brady What if the Bills drafted Mahomes What if the Bills drafted JJ Watt What if the Bills traded for Peyton Manning instead of him going to Denver What if , What if , What if He's very good, but we would never know what would have happened . Livinginthepast
I thought about this yesterday as well. Schwartz did a great job vs the strengths of our offense. I also remember the deep affection Schwartz D unit had for him, especially carrying him on their shoulders after defeating the Lions. I would have gladly taken him as HC or retained him as DC under a head coach like Reich. Instead we got the Rex disaster which was a complete waste of time for the franchise. Ethan in Cleveland
The better question is what would have happened if Rex just was a HC and let Schwartz run his defense. Rex was fine with the players and game management. He brought in Greg Roman who was doing great with the offense. Rex and his antiquated defense scheme just destroyed the team. Rex with Roman and Schwartz was a playoff team.
dpberr
I enjoy revisionist history debates - it makes for interesting fiction. I think Mario Williams would be finishing up a Hall of Fame career today; Marcel Dareus would have been an all-pro every year Schwartz was in Buffalo; It's likely Schwartz hires Scott Linehan to run the offense in 2015 and they still draft Darby in the second round and they likely sign the mobile Tyrod Taylor too. Linehan has decent success in the first year of his Buffalo tenure. He makes a controversial decision to put Sammy Watkins in the slot where he, Taylor and McCoy thrive in the play action system Linehan has historically favored. Not a lot of deep balls but a lot of dink and dunk with a potent defense. Watkins routinely has 100 yard games but the lack of WR and TE threats lets defenses isolate Watkins as the season progresses. I think the Bills make the playoffs in 2015, likely the wild card game that McDermott delivers several years later. The 2015 team under Ryan was more talented than its 8-8 record. oldmanfan
Schwartz to me is a coordinator who tops out in that role. Hardest thing for owners to figure out is which coordinators can become good HCs.
