Josh Allen Failed His First Big Test

The Pats at home for the division lead and Allen played his worst game of the season and worst since he went out with injury last year.

This was an opportunity for a statement and instead we got the worst parts of Allen’s game which was trying for big plays which resulted in INTs and pocket presence failure resulting in loss of points.

This isn’t the end of the world either. Allen deserves credit for leading the team to 3 wins and you can certainly see his improvement as a QB. But after saying he was done with hero ball, he instead forced 3 different balls for INTs which were crucial to the loss. On the positive his second half play was better and you have to remember NE is really good so it wasn’t like it was against a bunch of scrubs.

But this was his first real chance against a great team and he flopped big time. Up until today he was playing at a level that was very workable with no real signs to say his trajectory was down. But this was a bad day which opened some concerns about his long term viability. While I am not a big stat guy he has 3 TDs thrown against 6 INTs plus a bunch of fumbles too. The goal with drafting Allen was getting a guy who can do enough to beat the top dogs like NE and today at argument could’ve been made that the Bills were better off with Barkley just because he would’ve given less negative plays. The second half of the year will have more real opponents like BAL, NE, and DAL. The Bills defense is good enough to make a real run with and the offense has some good weapons like Beasley Brown and possibly Knox who is emerging a bit. Allen failed today but he has a good test to comeback next week and more opportunities to show he can move to that next level.

3 picks= failure

3 TD’s to 6 picks on the season isn’t so great either. I’m certainly not giving up on Allen. I’ve been in his corner all season, and the future is bright. We just need to see improvement. We also don’t need him to miss any substantial amount of time this season.

It's hard when he has to play against our own special teams.  They failed the test yet again.

4 Turnovers plus a sack that took them out of FG range. He was a big part of the points NE got and the lack of scoring we had. For right now it’s OK but it forces some not fun questions about his play which is very up and down

Can’t argue with that. However I would have loved to see the result of the game without the Cheap Shot that removes him.

I agree, the fourth quarter has been his thing all season. No one in their right mind wanted to see Barkley on the field for a potential game winning drive.

Pats are the gold standard in the NFL. Not going to overreact that they confused JA. JA played bad but WR’s got little separation, pass blocking struggled and didn’t understand why Daboll kept thinking the deep ball was there. Btw got zero from Jay Jones and the punt block was inexcusable. You have to recognize the gunners weren’t covered!

And if he'd remained in and taken the lead would this post have happened?

No.

People need to take a step back and think for a change.

But he didn’t. Sorry I like Josh but for the season he is 3 TDs to 6 INTs plus 3 lost fumbles. After two games where the error was pointing up he has now had two games where the error went decidedly down. The defense will not be great forever and I want my QB to be better straight up

He's certainly better than our special teams.  They stink.

This post wouldn’t have happened, but Allen does need to tone down the reckless play regardless. If not for the reckless play (poor decision making) he wouldn’t have been knocked out of the game.

3 picks= failure. Don't get me wrong I think he will be just fine but he played poorly today.

And tow more fumbles, one lost.

I think he will get better but how many games will it take? 5? 10? 15?  At what point do you know a guy won;t get better?  I have no idea.  I suspect McD doesn't either.

Convenient you're not including his 3 rush TDs as well.

But hey, whatever. You do you.

Agreed.  Terrible performance.  It’ll get better

Right. He’s had two good games (Jets Giants) one average (Bengals) and one bad which was today which makes you ask some hard questions. This isn’t a panic button he has started just 16 games as much as a well I like what you’ve shown but I need better for it to work long term.

how many Running TDS. I mean we want to count all his turnovers shouldn’t we count all his TDs

It will be better.  He played against a championship defense.  You know this

I am an Allen fan- but agree with you. Bad mechanics, holding the ball too long 3 picks just a step back today.

Right step back happens you hope it’s just a step and he goes forward from here. I would like a stretch with less turnovers it’s getting concerning.

Young QB with still less than a full season under his belt.  He is going to have bad moments.  What concerns me are the bad decisions he is making - taking sacks that knock you out of FG range, and throwing those awful off balance interceptions as he rolls out.

Just hope he learns from this sooner rather than later...

If Allen keeps making mistakes at this rate all season I’ll be worried. My hope after the 3-0 start was for Allen to keep learning how to reduce mistakes while the defense carried the team to victories this year. I’ll be worried if we start losing games, and Allen keeps making bad decisions with no sign of improvement once the offseason arrives.

100% he failed today. You can see the fear and the poor decision making from the get go.

Way too much respect for the Pats.

Lets hope he learns to not get in his own head like that against stronger opponents

On  a Side not BB has been doing this for years to young QBs. Ala Dick Lambeau

I don't think the offensive game plan helped Allen's play.  Why not quick slants, out-patterns or draws??  Maybe the plan was to show off Josh's arm and stretch the defense but obviously that failed.  That nice, quick play drive to start the 3rd quarter was never brought back again?

They lost because of Allen today plain and simple. Rather he finished the game or not he made some completely meatheaded plays. I haven’t given up on him yet but he’s played enough to start making these adjustments. His need for the big throw and homerun VS the safer shorter route is maddening as a fan. I hope he’s ok, and I absolutely want him starting against another pretty nasty defense in Tennessee. If he can’t learn from his mistakes and get better then at least we’ll know by seasons end if he’s franchise material or not. He needs to play every possible down though this season.

Sure 6 TDs total against 9 turnovers. I don’t want my QB committing 36 turnovers it’s not sustainable. He needs to do better I believe he can but today was a step back
