A Few Thoughts about the Colts game, in no particular order

Virgil

Recommended Posts

These are the posts that I dread writing.  The ones where the game was a snoozefest from the opening kickoff and it makes you want to look at the season as a whole, not just for the game.  But, I shall do my best to find 9 things to talk.  The struggle is real.

1 - Ivory - Let's start this off with a positive and talk the running game.  I said a few weeks ago that I think this offense is better suited to have Ivory be the lead back and today made me feel more of the same.  The rushing attack was strong enough where, if it were a close game, could have been a difference maker in helping put it away.  But alas, in typical Bills fashion under McDermott, we were out of the game by halftime and the rushing attack was only used to ensure the Colts didn't all out blitz the entire game.  I'm not advocating that we need to trade McCoy, but I don't think we'd be as bad off as previous years if we did with Ivory leading the way.

2 - Offensive Line - As everyone tried to pinpoint the reasons for our debacle of an offense, I think this was another week where the offensive line did good enough.  There were some whiffed blocks, one by Dawkins that comes to mind, but overall they gave enough time to make throws and opened up good rushing lanes.  For something I thought would be a huge liability heading intot the season, I personally cannot single out the offensive line as reason for our offensive woes.

3 - Anderson - Anderson played about as well as you'd expect for a guy who's been on the team for 10 days.  For those hoping for an Osweiler type performance, we aren't that team.  If it weren't for some stupid plays by Clay and Benjamin, this game might have been closer and allowed us to keep a balanced attack.  But, we are who we thought we were and he had to force some throws that ended in interceptions.  The first one was a good play by the defense.  The rest, well the turnovers at that point didn't matter as you knew we weren't coming back.  However, one thing I will say, our WR's looked a little bit more like WR's in this game, including Benjamin.  Is that a compliment to them stepping up or the throws our previous QB's were missing?

4 - I know it hurts. That's life. If nothing else, It's life. It's real, and sometimes it *****in' hurts, but it's sort of all we have.

5 - Defensive Lines - Like against Rodgers and the Packers, the defensive line was neutralized by a QB who knows how to read a blitz and get the ball out quickly.  After a few series of that, the blitz was almost useless and McDermott stopped sending them.  This isn't to say that our defense was shredded by Luck, as he only threw for around 150 yards and his starting field position was pretty great all game.  But our defensive line was not it's recent normal self and basically a non-factor.

6 - Linebackers - This week was a step back for our young LB's as Edmunds was out of position quite a few times and Milano got eaten up on rushing plays.  Mack had a field day swinging out of the backfield or bouncing rushes to the outside.  It was almost comical how bad our rush defense was abused.  By a certain point, you wondered if they futility of our offense finally got to them.

7 - Daboll - I'm going to say this very carefully as I still believe Daboll is a terrible coordinator, but I think he had a better plan today.  You take away the Clay fumble, Benjamin penalty, and some drops, the offense actually moved until the fire left the team.  You can call out more where the talent failed in this game than the playcalling.  With that being said, an offense that can't score touchdowns, even in garbage time is an overall junk and a good offensive coordinator gets more with less.  But it's hard to put a lot on a coordinator who had a QB who didn't play for almost 2 years and just saw the playbook until 10 days ago.

8 - McDermott - I've seen a lot of good threads today about our overall performance and I figured I'd talk about them here.  Why do we have so much dead cap space and the amount of blow-out losses we have stand out.  Truth is, good or bad, this is his plan.  This is what got him hired.  He wanted his guys and created the dead space.  If in two years, we are winning, competitive team playing for the division crown consistently, then all is good.  The defense seems to have found it's way overall.  But what signs are there to believe that our offense will follow suit?  That's what keeps me up at night.  We have no reason to believe that he can hire a quality offensive coordinator, scout a QB, or manage both of them in a game.  While I hate to see us change up regimes, and I'm not saying we will, but next season will be starting with almost 90 mil spent on FA's and solid draft positioning.  If we aren't solidly competitive, at least 8-8 with close games, I wonder how long this lasts.

9 - Trade Deadline - I know we don't have a lot of cap space this year, but I will go on record saying that if there is any chance that Cooper or Carr is available, I think you absolutely need to pull that trigger.  I would be willing to give up a 1st round pick as well.  Carr has proven to be a more than capable starting QB.  Allen needs at least a year of watching.  If Allen takes the job, then you'll still get value for Carr or Allen in trade.  We can't keep living in this Anderson/Peterman world.  Both or either of those guys makes our team immediately better.  Carr played with a broken back last year and that team is more checkout than any other team in the NFL.  I figured Gruden would destroy that team.  I'm just surprised at how bad it was.

10 - Next week against the Pats - Please let's just smack Marsha around a little bit.  After the typical "are the Pats done" conversation to start the season, they are back to 5-2 and handling business.  I expect a bunch of quick passes that slows down our defense, no support on offense, and then our typical 20+ point loss.

I'm sorry for the lack of depth this week, but that's just the state of the team.  I could pick out certain players and certain plays, but this was just one of our lackluster efforts that makes you wonder if this team can ever string it all together.

Either way, I'll see you all next week.

No way to giving an early first round  pick for Carr.

Before he broke his back, he was well on his way to being a top 10 QB. They tore up the league that year.

He’s absolutely worth it and I don’t see a fall back.

8)You honestly think that his plan to dump talented players(a combined 8 recent 1st and 2nd round picks) and create a mountain of dead money got McDermott hired?   You can't be serious.    I know that Terry Pegula has been wishy-washy but when he fired Rex the message was that the coaching wasn't good enough.    After the fact he may have talked Pegs into it but I doubt the Pegula's hated this roster the way McD feared it.

I thought the WR play was poor today as it's been all season.  They seldom break open and on Anderson's last INT the Bills WR was knocked off his route and the DB then ran the route, knocked the pass into the air for an easy INT.  That shouldn't happen in college ball let alone the NFL.  And at the risk of sounding like a broken record going into today's game the Indy defense was by far the weakest defense the Bills had played this year - 24th in yardage given up and 30th in points given up.  So any better play you saw with our receivers had everything to do with Indy's weak pass rush, 4th quarter prevent defense with a big lead and poor DB play.

Why on earth do you think Whaley was fired? Because he was doing a good job?

Yes, I wish some things would have been done different but the roster, the way it was constructed, especially salary-wise, needed a complete overhaul when Beane and McDermott came on board.

When Beane and McDermott came on board we went to the playoffs.  I'm not sold we did need any kind of a complete overhaul.  We needed someone who could coach an offense and someone who could coach a defense and we only got the latter.  I'm not afraid of the cap being eaten up if we had some talent because then all you need is coaching.  Currently we seem to have no talent and no coaching.

I think this was McDermotts plan, yes. But I don’t think it was that specific.  Whoever didn’t fit the process had to go, salary cap be damned.  Build the defense first, offense second.

I would be in on getting Carr. The wideouts looked some better today because Anderson was not hesitating like Allen on throws. But Josh is young like Edmunds and he has to trust what he sees and learn from the mistakes! Anderson doesn’t! We made mistakes at key times today and we need playmakers other than Shady!

You are giving them 2 more years?  Good post overall.  I completely disagree on this.  The QB situation this year is not about rebuilding or cap space.  It is about making horrible decisions.  Unwatchable football cannot be sold as rebuild.

I think that if we aren’t at least a top 20 offense and top 5 defense next year, it could change.  But yes, I think the Pegulas want continuity.

If this was the plan then he definitely should be fired.  How would TT affect the cap next year if he was on the team.  Maybe I am wrong about this.

I don't read any other post game analysis until i read your threads, you offer fairly realistic feedback.  I am among the most optimistic people when it comes to this team.  I cannot believe you had such a "positive" post after this debacle.  Sure I agree that anderson has had minimal time to prepare, but he's had 13 years in the league and i saw things out of him that would have caused Peterman to proclaim "Dude, why'd you just do that??"...today was absolutely pathetic.  I expected way more out of a seasoned veteran QB.  Did we run any first down plays today that weren't runs?  I don't think we make any high profile moves this year because we are going to kill the career of anyone that comes here.  I still stand with this team 1000% but they are plucking my last nerve.  I am so glad i have a full sunday off next week.  Eagles will be done by noon, Bills don't get decimated until late monday.  I'm gonna just sit on my couch and rock back and forth all day sunday, grateful I don't have to endure any more of this, for at least one day.  Thanks for your posts, they are among my favorite post game reads!

Whaley was fired because Pegs swooned for McD's highly idealized rhetoric.

The Pegula's were all-in on Whaley just days before.......in fact he was LEADING the coaching search....and if you listen to people who had knowledge of what was being said in the owner's box Pegs and Whaley were both fed up with Rex and in agreement that he was to blame for the problems.

Then the square Pegs fell in love in the interview and McD convinced them that Whaley had to go.

The same people with their hair on fire today are the same that were hailing Allen as the next coming after the Vikings game. This season is gonna be up and down mostly down and its a learning process across the board be patient and enjoy the few ups. Next year will be different just relax and drink your Labatt blues and when we get that next two stud first round picks next year with a trade up and all of the sudden have an injection of talent jump back on the band wagon of a winning team

Possibly a brand new decision from the coach?

Thanks Virgil - good read.  One HUGE takeaway that I am surprised you didn't cover was our yet again ABYSMAL Punt/Kick returners.  Those guys are cover your eyes awful!

Carr would be interesting....something needs to be done thats for sure.

Thanks again....

I think the game offense is still at least 50% Daboll.  I’m not blaming it all on Anderson.  25% turnovers and bonehead plays

Didn’t he start the season on the sideline and the go to the booth later?

I noticed that too

If I'm not mistaken, first pre-season game he called it on the sidelines, after that went up to the booth

I get my man. It almost feels like a waste of time to try to put together solid thoughts about this nightmare season. Feels like posters spend more time with thoughtful analysis than our pathetic front office. I'd be done watching this year if it weren't for fantasy football leagues and my winning streak on Fan Duel.

Was a very rough day overall. Ivory played pretty determined with heart. The O-line has strung together 3 decent games in a row now.

Everything else was just poop. I didn't expect any shattering stats from Anderson but did expect him to protect the ball a little better.

Coming into this game Shady had 4.0 YPA compared to Ivory's 2.5 YPA.

So explain to me how Ivory is better for this offense?

The Anderson pick was not on KB. Anderson threw into triple coverage and stared down KB.  Anderson has been total garbage for years and it showed again today.  He has no business playing in the NFL.  He should be a QB coach.

McDermott played Anderson so he didn't lose the locker room even though as awful as Peterman is, he was a better choice to play today.

The KB penalty was classic retaliation.  No defending it but the Colts player shoved first and the ref saw the retaliation.

O-line is below average but not so tragically flawed with Bodine at C.  Still needs a complete overhaul.

Why do you want Carr? He is playing terrible with a good HC.  Allen is the future.  I'm ok with adding players on the cheap but the season is over. Any acquisition has to be with an eye on 2019 2020

Virgil..I love reading your analysis after every game. One of the few bright spots I look forward to, even after a day like today. You always seem to be honest and truthful.... with just enough optimism.

Keep up up the awesome work!!!

How many of these players today on whatever team they are on and whatever contract are worth the money they are being paid?  Would the Bills be a better team if they had all these guys, certainly yes they would, but are they worth the money they are being paid?  The only one I think is worth his contract would be Glenn, but he was a risk in keeping due to injury.

I also think if the Bills hadn't made the playoffs last season, maybe ended the season at 7-9, they would have drafted much higher and wouldn't have needed to make the Glenn trade and still had been able to get into the top 10 or 5 if needed for the other moves they made.  Or they could have still traded Glenn, but after all the other moves still had at least one 2nd or 3rd round pick left for another player.  That was the problem with making the playoffs last year, they didn't draft as high as they maybe expected early on.

Good post @Virgil- Always appreciate reading.

Regarding regime change.. I don't think that we will, and I am not entirely sold that changing is a good idea... But I also am beginning to wonder what it would look like to have a HC like John Deflippo to play with that money and build the team how he wants it.... Not gonna throw McD to the wolves, but there is a concern about the overall competitive nature of the team.

While Allen may only be a rookie its very possible his leadership is a big part of the Buffalo Bills competitive nature and is almost impossible to replace.

The team and fan base is already leaning heavy on this kid and the only thing that can fix it is a healthy Josh Allen behind center again in my humble opinion.

Gilmore

Watkins

Goodwin

I've already stated I would have not kept Woods or Goodwin for the money they got but they are earning their contracts.  Darby would still be here on a rookie deal starting if they did not trade Watkins.  McBeane were predetermined to move Watkins and Dareus even if the play on the filed got worse.

I said a few weeks ago my season was now focussed on watching the guys who will definitely be here next season. It wasn't a great day for them. White was very grabby with TY, Milano had his poorest game, Dawkins had a couple of big blown blocks and Tremaine Edmunds was awful.

I normally like to find a positive or two out of each game.... yesterday was the exception. I can see no positives from that.
