This defense is overrated

"Stop being excited about the Bills!  Everyone should think they're awful like I do."

On paper, the Bills D was not good last year.  Hell, the Bills outright on paper were not good.  But paper doesn't play football.  We got to 9-7 and a playoff spot despite what the paper said.  We held the Jags to 10 points on their own field, despite what the paper said.

Stop looking at the team on paper.  Let's wait for the regular season to start before passing judgement.

Here’s the flip side: We must have GREAT coaches!

I’ll wait to see them play before having any strong opinions about this year’s team.

I wouldn't use overrated as how I would describe our defense but I would say it is still a work in progress...in the sense that there are still holes to be filled and they will continue to build it up over the next couple years.  I think we are on our way to having a legit top 5 defense but not expecting it this year.

I agree with the others who say theres very little we know now.  What really matters is to go 4-4 while your team is growing into something good.  Whether they will do that depends on too much that is unknowable today.

What will Edmund's be like in the second half? Davis? Murphy? Philip's?  A half dozen others?

What we do know is that the Bill's have a good defensive coach, and that's the single most important factor.

This time I actually agree, especially when I see people saying top 5, or even 10. This D was 26th in yards last year. They will be better, and a jump up to the middle IS a significant jump. Top 5 is dreaming, especially when you look at lack of depth in a couple key spots.

This team was at the league average in scoring defense.  Many players are back for their second season in the system.

Plenty of reasons it could be good.

18th in points and 26th in yards.

You want to focus on points. Will they have as much success in takeaways? Will the O be worse in TOs with a new QB, because that will also play into Ppg given up.

I think They will be better, but I don’t think they will jump to top 5. Even Top 10 would be a Great Leap Forward. I hope it happens.

There is cause for concern. The secondary is legit although if Davis gets hurt or gets old (Even though he isn't that old he has played for a long time and he has a significant injury history) the corner back position could look dicey. The front 7 could go either way. Edumonds is raw but one hell of an athlete, Milano showed flashes last year the team only needs him to be decent and Lorax is a strong side vet who should be able to provide decent play. But the LB core rests on Edumonds young shoulders. The D-line looks stout over the middle. Star should be a capable run defender, Henry is looking like a young stud and Kyle Williams should be a rotational player. The pass rush has Hughes who is a player who you should be able to expect a better season from, Shaq is a young player with upside having a good pre-season, Murphy a nice veteran addition (although he is hurt which is concerning) and there are also other younger players on the edge.

Overall I think the defensive optimism stems from confidence in the coaching staff and front office more so than anything else. The talent is there but depth is lacking and there are some questions esp in the front 7, but people seem to think that the coaching will be able to develop these players and find the best fits talent wise.

How bout they play a couple of games at least before you critique the defense? This is a new season coming up, righ?!

He's criticizing the people who say it's going to be a top 5 or 10 D, who also say this without seeing a few games first. He raises legitimate questions, for once.....

Your right. I'm concerned with our pass rush. But we should be improved in the middle with DL and mlb

I'd say top 15 at least

how'd we do last week with run defense.

says a contrarian with an honest viable point

I agree with you.

But points defense is what matters, not yards, and second half defense really matters, and Bills were good at that.

I don't know what will happen, but your great leap forward to 10 is possible.  Three potentially good additions on the line, a potentially great addition at middle linebacker, and a returning solid secondary.  No reason that group can't be better.

The OP makes some decent points.  I do think the LB’s could be a weak spot with Tremaine going through some growing pains.  I also do think that the pass rush is somewhat suspect.  We know what Jerry Hughes can do but it doesn’t look like Shaq will ever be a big time pass rusher.  The Bills

are hoping Trent Murphy can give them a lift but he has yet to take a pre-season snap.

I disagree on the secondary - I think that White is a solid CB and Davis is still

capable on the other side.  Hyde and Poyer are also very good.  The starting secondary is easily the strength of the defense.  Sure the depth is somewhat questionable and injuries could have a huge effect but you can say that at any position in the NFL

It's only overrated here on these boards. Just what fans tend to do. Overrate their own team/players while simultaneously being upset they're not getting the recognition they deserve.

This defense will probably play fairly similar to last season's D. Doesn't look like the run-D has improved much, but it's gotta be better than it was right??? Even just a little...

I did a quick search of preseason predictions.

USA Today - Bills rate 26th (the "concerning" tier) - https://ftw.usatoday.com/2018/06/nfl-rankings-defenses-units-vikings-jaguars-eagles-rams

Bleacher Report - Bills rated as 19th best defense preseason - https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2773486-power-ranking-every-nfl-defense-post-draft#slide14

NFL Network - Bills don't make the Top 9 - http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000947797/article/nfls-best-defenses-in-2018-jaguars-vikings-absolutely-loaded

The Sporting News (this one is a fantasy football ranking) - Bills rank 19th - http://www.sportingnews.com/us/fantasy/sport/news/fantasy-football-defense-rankings-2018-cheat-sheet-dst-sleepers-busts-projections-draft-strategy-draft-kit/21vdvmb334z51d1ug8ucwh3d7

So who are these people "overrating" the Bills defense? Where are they hiding their secret high ratings?

Agree with first post...no real reason to believe we'll be that good. Tough go of stopping the run and rushing the passer is most likely scenario. Hopefully our redzone defense and turnover ratio is good again...could be wrong though!

Go Bills.
