I say keep all 3... Injuries happen to every QB not named Brady

 

The complicated thing here is that eventually Josh Allen is going to be the starter and a guy like McCarron is a temporary placeholder at best.

 

I would like to see Peterman shine enough to stick around and maybe play a few games until Allen is ready, and then be our 15 year backup QB. To me, that's the perfect scenario.

If they do it, it would be Lee taking up the spot of the swing tackle.  They carried 5 OTs last year, which I don't think will happen again

Buffalo Bills practice observations: Is Josh Allen moving up...

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Throughout training camp, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott has evaded the inevitable questions about the quarterback competition and how reps will be divided by saying, “We’ll stick with the rotation.”

 

That rotation has normally included Nathan Peterman and AJ McCarron switching off with the first and second-team offenses. On Monday, that changed, as the rookie worked exclusively with the second-team offense. After Allen spent most of his time with the third-team offense early in camp, the move was notable.

 

Allen didn’t disappoint, either. He finished 7-10 passing and could have had an even bigger day if he connected with Rod Streater on a deep pass during the hurry-up drill at the end of practice. One of Allen’s best throws of the day came on a deep sideline pass to Corey Coleman during 7-on-7 work.

Based on the camp reps and where they're all taking them, the WR ranking looks something like this to me (today's practice performance notwithstanding):

While he isnt getting reps yet I would think Corey Coleman is above Streater.  I think they keep at least 6 (including Streater and Coleman).

Allen gets more 2nd-team reps; Zay Jones and Jason Croom continue to impress

For the second day in a row, Bills’ rookie QB Josh Allen was primarily with the second-team offense throughout the entire day of practice. Whether or not that’s an indication Allen will be seeing extended playing time with anything other than the third stringers in Friday night’s preseason game remains to be seen. But with just two practices remaining before the team heads off to Cleveland to face the Browns, it’s beginning to look like the first rounder may get an earlier look than the second half, which is when he came into the game last Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers.

 

Nathan Peterman, who fell on his right shoulder on the very last play of Sunday afternoon‘s practice, worked with the third-team offense Monday, while A.J. McCarron, who appeared to injure his lower right leg about midway through that same session, got the first-team reps.

Quarterbacks are often undervalued.  Would not surprise me at all if one fetched a 5th rounder.

Their trade value is one jockstrap for another. Right now the worst thing going for them both is that neither one is better than the other. That speaks volumes about their trade value, which is nil.

Brett Favre ended up as a third round pick from the Jets. 

 

These guys ain't Brett Favre. The Bills couldn't trade these guys except for another team's junk.

Used to call this a zip or zipper package. A good route running fast receiver can sometimes draw as many as three defenders into him and away from the under and seam routes when they play cover 2, and draw the deep safety to his side and give KB the inside leverage on his guy. I think Daboll seems smart enough to know what to do with a guy like Coleman.

Feel so bad for O'Leary... The kid just makes big plays in games. He produces. Obviously he isn't as big and athletic as the ones that he is competing with but he stepped up last year when Clay got hurt. Would suck to not be able to have a roster spot for him.

Yes, i was because you dont just magically regain form by not being healthy for an entire year.

 

Murphy tore his ACL last year in the pre season and was due to face a four game suspension for PEDs, and you just assume he needs to be healthy for the regular season and thats all.

 

Like a switch will just flip and boom Murphy will be pefectly fine. Murphy has two, three, and nine sacks in three years with Washington. 

 

There isnt a body of work to assume Murphy will all of a sudden just become a beast without having shown the ability to get healthy, and play in live action.

i agree. he did win the best te in the nation award in college and imo the more targets he gets, the better he is.

 

he has got to be no.2 and if he's not ,it's all because of the bones new regimes have against players from the old. it can't be anything else.....and if godforbid clay went down, with no nick we suck at te....right away.

I think they will try to hold on to all three and get a trade for the loser.  No point in just cutting him outright. I agree, Allen will be number two no matter what, if no other reason that to get the snaps in practice with the Bills offense.

Or it could be because Thomas, Croom, and Lee are all faster, stronger, better at blocking, and have outplayed O'Leary in camp and preseason.

ok, i'll pull the body of work card....what has lee done before thurs. night? thomas...well he aint' no rookie either.   i do like the slight/former wr in croom.

 

if they carry 3 and i think they will, it's clay/o'leary and croom. lee is nothing more than lee smith and while i like logan, i don't see him as a good receiving te. jmo

I dont see Coleman as a slot Wr.  I think he lines up outside and stretches the defense vertically.  With his speed he can run the go and Moss's stop go for 30 yards.  Three Wr sets I think you see Kerley and Mcclud as traditional slots.  I expect to see Benjamin lined up and moved around in a similar manner NE uses Gronk in passing situations.  In those instances Jones or Streeter line up outside.  The addition of Coleman is kind of a unheralded move but really helps define roles and options in the offense.  The Wr Corp really isn't that bad.  Benjamin, Coleman, Kerley, Jones, Streeter, Mcloud would be my choice.

Quarterback

Things continuing to shake-up a bit with quarterback reps as we approach the second preseason game. AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman both back on the field after injury scares Sunday afternoon. It was McCarron's turn in the rotation with the first team, but he was followed by Josh Allen running the second team and Nathan Peterman the third. This is how things were divided the entire morning, the first time ever we've seen Allen go exclusively with the 2's. While noteworthy, I won't look too far into it until after I see how the rotation shakes out Tuesday morning.

 

Wide receiver

Zay Jones fully back in the mix now after practicing for the first time this training camp without the red, non-contact jersey. He has looked good to this point and continued that wearing the blue jersey. Jones right in there with the first team, joining Kelvin Benjamin, Jeremy Kerley, and Andre Holmes. Rod Streater also seeing time with the 1's as well as even a little Kaelin Clay. Brandon Reilly missed practice yet again with a rib injury. Corey Coleman keeps learning on the fly as most of his time today was with the second team.

 

Center

The center competition continues to alternate days between Ryan Groy and Russell Bodine.

I read somewhere that perhaps Cleveland didn't really put Coleman in the best position and he can play the slot?  Also, in Daboll's offense I think they're looking for all of the players to be able to play the X, Y, or Z so they're all going to be versatile.

IMO

One of the "criticisms" of Jones coming out. Of the draft was that many of his record-breaking catches were short passes and bubble screens. Sounds like a perfect fit for Daboll's offense.

For sure, Daboll will be moving people around.  Regarding Coleman, he hasn’t had much success over the middle in college or the pros,  doesn’t seem like he like going over the middle and getting crunched.  I expect to see every wr in the slot at some point based on the new offense.  Can’t wait to see it in action again
