Justin Simmons released 👀

Recommended Posts

Simmons will be 31 this year. Signing him would fly in the face of the "we need to get younger" mantra that was clearly directed towards the Safety position. We'd just be trading one expensive aging cast off for another.

Well isnt Simmons a few years younger than Hyde and Poyer😎  It depends what kind of market he has, but a 2 year deal might make sense to keep veteran quality on the back end. He’d be an upgrade

Too old. Another old often injured player.

Let's stay the course and get younger

They did though. Do we want everyone young? Rapp is 26. I’m not saying sign Simmons but I want a safety that knows how to lineup a defense.  But also not very expensive. They are out there.

I mean... I think he's probably better than either of them.  So the mantra can just be - we need to get better.

Bills making a move for Simmons?? 👀

Hopefully it’s team friendly as he’s getting up there in age…

Hopefully the reported deals for Savage, McKinney, Jones, Byard and even Geno Stone are all more than what we’d pay him…

Somehow I think someone’s going to give him $8m+ a year…

If Buffalo signs Simmons, I will be 100% convinced that they (Beane and McDermott) longer have any semblance of a plan and are officially throwing darts hoping to save their jobs.

Yeah, when they said "we need to get younger" - I can't imagine they meant swapping a guy who's turning 33 for a guy who's turning 31.

they also likely didn’t expect one of the best safeties, a 4 time All-Pro to suddenly become a free agent.  & as pointed out above he has Mahomes # more than anyone

Those guys are a combined 66 years old.  How is that the barometer?

how is trying to improve your defense by signing an elite player just “throwing darts” to save their jobs?

You do realize you are engaging with someone who isn’t a Bills fan and only comes on here to stir the pot?

They have continued to kick an exorbitant amount of money into future cap years in order to pay the older versions of the same players more and more money.  They just gave AJ Epenesa an extension with a sizable pay increase to remain on the team and be part of a Defensive End rotation that returns 11.5 sacks from last season.  If they finally let Poyer and Hyde go just to pay another 30+ year old Safety (they won’t), then they’re clearly just throwing ish against the wall to see if it sticks.

These are not the actions of a front office who is worried that they’re going to have to clean up the mess.  They’re the actions of a front office who had a plan, worked it beautifully, but saw it fall short of a Super Bowl.  Instead of tearing it down strategically a year ago when it was clear that they didn’t have a championship roster and putting together a 2 year rebuild, they kept taking out payday loans to try to make another run with a roster than has gotten progressively worse for what will be the third straight season.

For as much crap as people give McDermott about “the process”, he and Beane built a monster.  They had a clear and easy to articulate plan.  I have no idea what their current plan is.  Signing Simmons would convince me that there isn’t one.

the plan is to win the SB and to do that you need as many quality players as possible.  The Niners and Chiefs both have more high end players than the Bills. This would be a chance to add one

Out of all the things in the military I did, the most I ever got in trouble was because I convinced a bunch of people our LTs first name was Mike and his last name was Hunt. Well worth the as$ ripping

An incredibly tragic story for that man. His heart was crushed and he took his own life beside the grave of his grand daughter who died not long before.

using AJ in what is basically a "they have to stop paying old vets" argument is just bad. this is AJs first big contract and its not even that expensive for a young DE whos gotten better each year.

also what made it clear we didnt have a SB roster...

for some reason i remembered you as a decent non bills fan poster, I guess its the other chiefs fan on here who actually made decent points

Signing a 30 year old safety does not make sense with effort to eliminate older players.

I'd rather sign a 30 year old to a 2 year deal than a 32 year old.

I'd also rather not start a rookie at FS.

They need another quality safety from somewhere and probably 2.

If Simmons is signed and a draft pick made the plan is Simmons is the bridge to the draft pick.  Simmons is 2 years younger and that isn't insignificant.  I don't need a FA to come in for 5 or 6 years.  I need someone for 1 or 2 at the most while the rookie gets seasoning.  The safety market is going to be weird.  If you could get Hyde back for a year for next to nothing with the same plan of passing it off to 2024 draftee in 2025 would you do it?
