sven233
Well deserved.... I believe he has become a better coach each year he has been here. Seems to learn from things and is making better decisions in his 4th down management. Still has to work on his clock management and challenges, but there is rarely a week the team isn't prepared and doesn't give their best effort. I think he gets the most out of the talent he has to work with and I'm really hoping he coaches more talented players next season. Hope he wins. Not sure if this is official... https://www.google.com/amp/s/clutchpoints.com/nfl-honors-picks-for-top-awards/amp/ Quote There are four strong candidates—two from each conference—to win the Coach of the Year (COY) honors. Baltimore’s John Harbaugh and Buffalo’s Sean McDermott are the two coaches from the AFC who could snag COY, while the 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan and Packers rookie head coach Matt LaFleur have the best chance from the NFC. Logic
I love McDermott, but if I'm being unbiased... I'd have to say either Shanahan, who took the 49ers from 4-12 to the Super Bowl in one calendar year, or Matt LaFleur, who won 13 games as a rookie head coach, are more deserving.
Steptide
I believe he should get it for the simple fact that 2 of his 3 years here, he got the bills to the playoffs.

I won't disagree, but the 49ers were 4-12 because Jimmy G went down. They were already a much stronger team than their record indicates. And Matt LaFleur had Aaron Rodgers to work with. Both showed a lot, but those situations are more complicated than them just coming in and rebuilding their respective teams. Honestly, I'd put John Harbaugh up there. He had to completely rebuild the offense to fit with Lamar Jackson, and did a great job covering up his weaknesses and accentuating his strengths. Plus their defense was really good too. JOE IN HAMPTON ROADS
McD will get extra credit for turning around one of the most hapless team in the league, a team many thought was beyond help after two decades in the toilet. He probably wont win, but the fact he is a finalist says volumes about the Pegulas and where this team is headed.

He should be the front runner - but wasn’t the main reason they went 4-12 last year because their QB was out for the season and they didn’t have good enough backups? He and Lynch dramatically turned around the team from where it was when they took over 3 years ago, though. But here's the thing.....we were essentially 8-8 (mediocre) the three years before he arrived (9-7, 8-8, 7-9)....during those years we had a top-4 defense and a top-10 offense (just not at the same time). I think it's a fair take we were mired in mediocrity, and that perhaps drastic action needed to be taken. I'm just not sure the argument really can be made for "beyond help" or "in the toilet"

Happy
It's good that McD is getting recognition for his efforts. However, Kyle Shanahan should be the front runner followed by Matt LaFleur and John Harbaugh.

Chaos
if regular season is all that matters then the inventor of Lamar Jackson whose team was the number one seed in the AFC hands down did the best coaching job. If post season matters then we will know Sunday night if Reid or Shanahan is coach of the year.

No one actually read that article thought, they just saw "Coach of the Year" on Twitter and everyone thought it was the NFL Honors award, but it wasn't so THEN everyone assumed it was "fake". It was neither of those, it was just an opinion from a survey of top NFL Executives. Hard to argue againt that, going from 4-12 to the Super Bowl is tremendous. Only problem with that is hearing Richard Sherman lecturing everyone about it. folz
Congrats Coach McD on the nomination. Well deserved. I think Shanahan will likely win it, but my vote would be for Harbaugh (with McD a close second).
Gugny
If I had a vote, I'd go with Harbaugh. McDermott has (in my opinion) done a very good job with his "process," and we started to see the fruits of it this past season. However ... a 10-win season with that schedules is on the unimpressive side. The team was inconsistent for much of the season. I think he deserves consideration and it's right that he's a finalist. I'm still glad that he's the coach. But Harbaugh simply did a better job. He recognized what he had (and didn't have) in Lamar Jackson and he built a team and an offensive identity around Jackson's skillset. Ego went out the door. They were the best team in the regular season and that is primarily because Harbaugh didn't try to make Jackson something that he isn't.
