Hapless Bills Fan
This may have been tucked into one of the post game threads - apologies if I missed it. YPP put up a clip of the run play where Allen DIDN'T fumble when Watt punched at the ball. I thought it was worth a look. I think Allen has been working hard at ball security, and while it's still a work in progress, I'm impressed that he hung on to the ball here. "High and tight, Bills Claw!" Is it just me, or did Watt get him in the parts too?
RiotAct
was this the one fairly late in the game? I thought for sure he whiffed completely but I guess not
Stank_Nasty
Kudos for holding on but if watt doesn’t whiff on it, that thing easily pops out. oh well. Missed opportunities like that on either side of the ball for any team any given week. Just now, RiotAct said: was this the one fairly late in the game? I agree it would have been tough to hold onto if he made good contact on the way down (he didn’t completely whiff). I’m hoping Allen saw him at the last second and helped prevent the clean hit. Either way the rip back was strong and Allen held onto that. We need all the ball security we can get with this defense.

Right. More worried about it through the air with the pats. Their int numbers are staggering. I’d have to look at the numbers but I bet PITT leads the nfl in forced fumbles. It’s sorta their “thing” this year. Edited December 18, 2019 by Stank_Nasty
Nick the Greek
I’m just waiting for some one to try and punch for a fumble, miss, and end up punching the ball carrier in the face. that’s gonna be hilarious.

Stenbar
That play should be a penalty. You can't freaking punch someone with the hopes of jarring the ball loose. If that is the case then just start punching the hell out of everyone that has possession. Start drafting MMA fighters to force fumbles. LOL...What a freaking joke. SHould be a unsportsmanlike and a automatic ejection and fine. I know it is not a rule now but going forward they need to change that immediately 16 1 1

Rc2catch
Watt is going to regret throwing those punches so hard. I can respect trying to cause the fumbles but he’s going to shatter that hand at some point.

Remember this is the guy that had such a ferocious grip on the ball with two hands that a Dallas defender literally pulled him out of the pile and downfield - by the ball - and he hung on. 7 minutes ago, Ethan in Portland said: Watt missed the ball and Allen still almost fumbled it away INteresting. LSHMEAB
Watt did whiff on the ball, but he made significant contact with Allen's arm which could have easily lead to a fumble if not for strength/awareness. I wouldn't say it was amazing or anything like that, but it was solid. Play also makes me think more guys should do what Watt did. You don't see it very often, but a punch seems like a pretty effective method to jar a ball loose. More effective than just slapping or grabbing. INteresting. No. Watch the replay. He hits Allen in the chest and then extends down into his groin. He never makes contact with the ball. Allen either by luck or instinct is pulling the ball up and closer to his chest as the punch glances off his chest and heads to his nuts.

I don't think it's luck, I think Allen has been working on his ball security with the RB coach and it's starting to pay off. I think earlier this season that's a sure-fire fumble. Watt tries to scoop the ball out as he pulls his arm back out and Allen is pulled down. Allen holds on hard and uses his left arm to push Watt's scooping arm away. atlbillsfan1975
The ones that scare me are the fumbles that happen in the pocket when Allen gets blindsided. Allen overall has been getting better, but in the Ravens game it seemed his pocket awareness went way down. If the Bills play the Steelers again I hope one of the lineman gives Watt a healthy punch to the gut or groin.

I know it is not a rule now but going forward they need to change that immediately I'm starting to agree with this that the play should be illegal since it is a punch. If he hits the guys hand it can cause injury if it hits his wrist forearm it can cause injury as well.

Kelly the Dog
How is that possibly legal? And if it were, why wouldn’t 350 pound defensive tackles just wind up and punch running backs as hard as they can in the breastplate or gut on every play trying to cause a fumble? 4 1

Because that requires incredible timing to hit the ball as the ball carrier gets even with you while you're engaged with a blocker or, like you see in the Watt video, running next to the ball carrier sacrificing yards instead of going for the tackle.
